Thanks for the info , you ve shown how you bolt your knee braces , what hapens when you have one behind the other , how do you bolt the second one? And does code allow post on that 1/2 inch plate or should you have 1 inch spacer?

At 5:00 drilling the hole in the knee brace. Where can I find that auger bit with the huge, flat counterbore? Or what would be a good term to use for the interweb searches?
I was wondering if you could answer a question: I am building a modified stick built cape; interior dim 26' x 26'. Included in thesis dimensions is a 7' x 26' is mud rm, laundry, 1/2 bath that will have a conventional ceiling.. The remaining 1st flr. is kitch., liv. rm., din. area and cellar/2nd flr. stairs. I couldn't justify the cost for a complete timber frame or post/beam so I am timbering the 1st for ceiling and faux beaming the 2nd flr. cathedral ceiling. I see that you used 4" x 10" beams for the 2nd story joists. I see by another comment below that spacing is 24" O/C - what can this size beam span? I cannot seem to find any vids on this matter anywhere. I'm in the northeast so white/eastern pine will be used. My carrying beam will be offset having roughly 15' and 11' long 2nd story flr. joists. P.S. 9" tall timbers as opposed to 10 or 12" are easier to come by here in Southern New England. Are your timbers stamped for structural use? Oh mann.. another question? I'm guessing from what I see I can use a perimeter timber for a top plate - can it also be a header for windows? Thank you for any answers. Either way thanks for the tips to install them. I"ve seen so many vids/builders hang joist hangers first then slide in the 2 x's never considering the different heights/sizes lumber these days. Be well, Pete Granville Ma.

I would recommend that you consult with a structural engineer about the spans, since it’s more complicated than a quick look can determine. Yes, you can use the beam to double as a window header.

Just curious to your thought on centering a tenon on a knee brace versus cutting the tenon to one side. If cut to one side does can that cause rotation in the beam from not having the brace centered?
@HeirloomBuilders4 жыл бұрын
gary24752 I’ve never cut tenons without centering them, but I know it’s been done successfully. I know how strong a half lap joint is, which is cut on the side of two opposing members (not a beam to brace connection). I’d be willing to bet that it wouldn’t cause any more twisting than would happen anyway. Just harder to get a good looking joint I bet.
