I never liked the idea of buying fancy furniture. What happens when you move? Will that piece fit in your new home or will it end up on the street? When I decided to start building furniture I realized I needed to build it in a way that if I move, I could always make use of it in one way or another, even if it becomes an outdoor bench. By introducing a standardized joinery system I could always make new pieces fit together to expand the capabilities of the current build. I like to think of it as jumbo Leggo for adult interior designers.
Let me introduce you to Timber Transformers.
Designed, Built, and Film by Trustin Timber.
Special Thanks to Little Miss Timber and Son of a Birch for helping me with the stop motion shoot.

Sir: years ago when I first watched this video, so amazed was I by the design that I set out to attempt a version of this for myself. With no timber nearby, experience, or plunging chain saws in my possession, my approach was more the "sticks and plywood" approach of a home builder, who created the shapes with wood glue and screws one could find in a home improvement store, and layed plywood on top. I have two unfinished proof of concept pieces in my basement, along with an incompleted frustum (the chopped off cones in your work that give the pieces height) and set it aside to raise kids and money to care for them. One day I will revisit this. It was a discovery build to see "if I could someday." I'm glad to provide you with pictures. I added upon the design to allow the insertion of two square steel rods at each end so I could better control the height of piece that abut each other at the ends, so as to make a table or bookcase with length of my choosing (depending on how many of the flat surfaces I make)--but I digress. Particularly when it comes to a dining table (and my lack of building skills) I wanted there to be a smooth transition lengthwise of dining table pieces where people slide food products down a table's length to share them. The real reason for writing to you is to give you a business idea. I know it costs to patent this, but if you do, a mass low budget retailer like Ikea might enjoy selling something more like what I designed--although of course with your original concept that YOU invented--so people could have furniture capable of becoming a coffee table, bookshelf, or dining table as needed. My frustum will have a female receptacle on its bottom to accept another frustum so as to provide height by stacking frustums to make, with one frustum's height (but at least two frustums) benches, and with say two frustums stacked, a dining table. All the best to you!
@TrustinTimber
@TrustinTimber 4 жыл бұрын
Dave Jones Great to hear it brought you inspiration Dave. The design was actually designed for a contest with Woodland Creek Furniture one if the biggest rustic furniture maker in the USA and Bosch Tools was suppose to give the winner a full collection of there tools. I won but both companies didn’t hold up there end of the bargain. I invested a lot of time into this and designed a full collection. Multiple tables, beds, console tables.... And then they both just cut ties. Gave me no reason. I think it was when they found out I was based in Canada. Anyway, my point is, I invested enough already. So if you want, take the idea and run with it. Remember me when you’re rich. Let me know if you need more designs and we can go into business. All the best. Thanks for watching and sharing your story.

Trustin, another thought. Please don't misread me, I love the concept, design and your gift at working with timber, but consider this. Actually, before you do, lets get our terms down. Those beautiful shelf/table/bench holders you made a mathematician would call square frustums. That said, consider using that amazing timber plunge saw to add the same female receptacles to the frustum bottoms as appears on the shelf bottoms to make them stackable to form a table. True, a table would require 8 (yeesh). Second thought, consider (gasp) making this out of sticks and plywood for the commercial market. Less weight = less cost, including shipping. Just a thought to help you make $.
