NOW that's what I call, how to do a video/tutorial! Thank you so much for NOT talking to your audience as-if-we've NEVER heard of the word MOLD. I also, greatly appreciate your not only getting to the point/s, but kept it clear and very concise. Doing so made your tutorial a pleasure to listen to and very easy to follow. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Notes taken from video if this helps anyone: ▪︎2 tubes Type 1 Silicone Caulking with caulking gun. ▪︎8 oz. of Nail Polish with Acetone - might need to add more to mix until it's a runny consistency like maple syrup. ▪︎1 milk carton or something wax lined or a disposable container that will be bigger since we need 1/2 inch all around the sides when set. ▪︎Place object to mold in this case a Mason Jar - place it upside down. ▪︎Mark the back side on the disposable carton where the seam line will be. (This is also where you want to set the back of the mason jar or object you are molding). ▪︎Pour in the silicone mix then after filled to the top use a skewer to remove any air bubbles and flatten out the top. ▪︎When set cut the jar out by making a jagged edge cut on the back seam side you marked. Will be set when it's solid & rubbery - typically 12 hrs but check to he sure it's set 1st. ▪︎Now pop out the molded object after cutting the jagged edged seam line. ▪︎Make a hole in the bottom of the mold for the wick once sent. ▪︎Before putting in medium/resin/wax be sure to tape up the cut jagged side so the medium doesn't leak out. ▪︎For candle makers go thru typical steps of making a candle... ▪︎Used in video: Kentucky 143 Paraffin Pillar Wax from Kentucky Essentials.

This can only work for wax? Or can use plastic or aluminum in the mold?

@Delana Taylor Online idk where you’re buying your silicone but Walmart sells it for around $5 and the gun is $2 and you don’t need a respirator mask. You can just use a regular mask (go to your local cvs, Walgreens or krogers and get 3 free N95 masks) and maybe a fan or open a window. As for the acetone you can get that for around $5 too. You’re looking at a less than $20 material list. Not $60.
@attainableaudio4533
@attainableaudio4533 2 жыл бұрын
@@OzyIllustrates yes you don't NEED the respirator, as long as your doing it with ventilation, and the n95 type masks are actually only made for particles not vapor, but they may cut down on it a little, but really unless your doing making molds full time it just stings the nose a little. Also the trial version of the actual mold making kit is a not as much in volume as the caulk. For a quick short term mold it a good alternative, but the advantage of the actual mold kit is they are more durable longer term molds for longer production runs.
@editek5992
@editek5992 2 жыл бұрын
@Delana Taylor Online The mask and gun are reusable so in the long run it is more cost effective unless it is a one time deal making a mold, then it would be netter to just buy the silicone compound. Also it depends on the quantity used.

@quinbee_creates 3 жыл бұрын
@@sherrilynnhill Did you make sure to use straight silicone? A lot of the silicones contain additives for various reasons so ensure the label says "100% silicone" or "no additives" on it. Same with the acetone -- some nail polish removers are half water so you're not getting much acetone. Try 100% acetone from a building supply or hardware store.

since you used a milk carton for the outer mold you could tape it and slip it back into another milk carton to use as the mother mold for extra support.

This is the best tip I have ever seen for silicone mold making. I work with epoxy and have tried a few of the off the shelf overpriced options with ok results but it gets expensive, sometimes too expensive to make one off items. this is an awesome affordable option as I am asked all the time for custom shapes and pieces.

Not quite _all_ the other videos, but you're right about 99.9999% of them. They either use cornstarch or they use dish soap to make the silicone more manageable. But the GEO Sustainable channel on YT has talked about using naphtha to thin out silicone. However, he never really got into this size of a pour project like Timber Ridge, herein. If either acetone or naphtha work, then it could be there are other solvents which might work to thin out silicone caulk. The cheapest one might be 90-99% alcohol, but I've never seen anyone try it.

I would suggest that you pour silicone in only one spot, allow it to find its own way so there are no bubbles. Usually, you pour into one corner, continually pour slowly (especially thick rubber) to prevent capturing air pockets. There are many great vids to show you this technique.

Also just a tip for the rest of you perfectionist out there, the zig zag technique is great but you leave an awkward seem that will bug some of us.. but a fix for that is to stay with the zig zag technique BUT on the outside half of the silicone but as you get closer towards the inside or your object, make a line straight..I know it seems impossible just thinking about right now but once you have the razor blade and you're doing it it works out.
