You're so spot on about the workflow thing and how dependent it is on what you're using it for. I usually compose / sound design / arrange everything in Ableton Live, just because it's built for a ridiculously fast sample / midi / automation based workflow. But when it comes to recording a band or mixing an album from stems I get, Pro Tools is the go-to. I often find myself exporting stems of my own productions into a Pro Tools session instead of recording in Ableton, just because I know I'll need to edit those vocals and will miss the editing features of Pro Tools, even though it would be much more convenient to handle everything in one project.

I just recently heard an interview with lead singer of Sabaton, and he does the same thing; composes in Ableton Live, records in Pro Tools.

Helpful video. I use both Ableton and Pro Tools. Only have been using Pro Tools for a year. Have to say I love mixing in Pro Tools over Ableton. The send/return limitation in Ableton is annoying and the audio effects rack workaround is not enjoyable to use. I agree on the returns being really quiet for whatever reason compared to Pro Tools, always need to use a trim plugin. I will say with pro tools I have run into more bugs than with ableton.

I think for tracking, mixing, editing etc Reaper is one of the best options out there. It is reliable and easy on the cpu and ram, has a lot of customization( for toolbars, appearance, workflow etc), it is very good and easy for editing, have some great tricks (like spectral analyses on your waveforms, automatic coloring, grouping with just a drag and drop on a folder, can create parameter linking, make automated envelopes from the tracks volume changes, etc ) Every daw has its use though and things that it works the best. If you work and collaborate with established industry studios maybe you can justify the cost and hustle with pro tools. If you create music and want the convenience of all the included instruments Logic is great. If you are creating by arranging loops, phrases, instruments in a more live scenario Ableton could be what you want. There are a whole lot of other daws out there that may be great for what you do, the best is the one that suits your needs and you know how to use it well. If you need a workhorse of a daw, if you have already plugins that you want, if you have a not so powerful computer, if you want to have the option to even put a demo version on a n other computer and work without any limitation and problems... give Reaper a chance. It saved me when I had a slow computer, it saved me when I had to record in a studio that had problems with an other daw and I just downloaded it and record with the demo without even the musicians realized that there was any problem(We later installed the full version there)

But most people can get away with using Pro Tools Studio (not ultimate) and Ableton Standard (not suite) for about half of both the prices you listed. But like I say in the video several times - it’s about whatever workflow and feature set works best for you.

I find Ableton to be a bit more robust than Logic, especially with the audio overload messages that randomly pop up on Logic. I agree that Ableton is not as straightforward as other DAWs (in fact I used to think that it was ugly compared to the others), but once you get it, things just "click". I don't understand why Logic haven't implemented a search function for plugins, and be able to adjust the imported loop to an already rolling project (yes I know of Smart Tempo, but it's gets a bit quirky with multiple loops, Ableton just does it well). Pro Tools looks great but with all the changes happening to it, probably staying away and getting good at the current DAWs I use.

I feel like this guy never figured out Ableton and the type of workflow it is designed for. Ableton is an absolute powerhouse for creativity and sound design in ways Pro Tools can never even imagine. Automation, for example, is an absolute chore in Pro Tools, yet in Ableton you can easily automate any parameter in any plugin with a click or two. You can even automate automations with other automations. Would you like to automate a parameter with an LFO and then have the LFO rate increase when the sound hits a certain volume, and simultaneously fade in a gated delay effect as the LFO rate increases? Easy, this takes less than 10 clicks in Ableton. I'm not sure this is even possible in Pro Tools. Every plugin, parameter, and control in Ableton can be automated and mapped to any other control. Its basically like the entire DAW is a modular system where anything can be patched to any other thing. For someone who wants a DAW to only record, edit, and mix, I can see where this guy is coming from. But DAWs are so much more than an editable multi track recorder these days. I feel like he completely missed that entire side of what makes DAWs so amazing. I want a DAW that encourages me to experiment, to push my creativity, to have limitless manipulation over audio, and to bend the rules. I find Pro Tools to be very lacking and inflexible in these areas of production, especially when it comes to sound design and creativity.
@TimBuell5 ай бұрын
I use Ableton for both productions and for use of running racks for live shows just about every day. Like you said - it’s designed with a certain workflow and that workflow, for me - isn’t as streamlined as pro tools is for me when in the studio. You can also command, ctrl, option click any parameter in a plugin in Pro Tools and enable automation for it. Like I say several times in the video - all three of these programs do a great job for about any application. It comes down to preference and workflow.

Mixcraft is the best for me because of it's ease of use, price, and it simply does what I need it to do. However, I have found out that it's best to use the DAW that you can EASILY Manipulate. Discussion has a built in bias of what you know. At the end of the day, there is no best DAW. There only is the best DAW for you. Thus, everyone needs to consider their musical style, personal work flow, and preferences and decide for themselves what is best for them. Look at what others making the music you make are using. Find out why they use that DAW. Get free trials of the candidates that you want to try based on interest and recommendations. Pick the one that works best for you for what you do. That is the best DAW.

Reason synths, drumming patches, reverb, SSL comps, I am more and more NOT using default logic so I can now just migrate those plugs to new DAW. Ableton has more virtual instruments. Tons of them in the live suite. And logic to me is like a child’s program. I found it confusing and I’ve been using DAWs since Cakewalk in the 90’s. You have instrument tracks. Sample track. Drum tracks. Midi tracks…. That’s confusing because there is only two types of tracks. audio and midi. And logic you have to have an overpriced apple computer. The reason I’m watching this is because I was thinking about trying pro tools as an Ableton user. Mainly for audio and mixing. But 29 bucks a month that’s basically $350 a year every year. Seems crazy to have to keep paying that much for a DAW.
