The segment where he called the hotel in Port Moresby was incredible. I lived in neighboring Indonesia for about 15 years and I’ve been to the Indonesian half of New Guinea. Probably the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. But many of the towns and cities there are dry, either by federal government mandate or because the local citizens voted for it. Why? Much like Native Americans, the Papuan people (maybe all Melanesians) have a genetic trait that affects their ability to cope with alcohol and they become heavily addicted to it. From my experience, Papuans are the most wonderful people I’ve met anywhere I’ve ever been (that’s saying a lot to go beyond the level of kindness shown by Indonesians). But I have run across several drunk Papuans and it is a completely different story. Picture someone in the throes of a severe PCP trip. In the seven years I lived in Jakarta, I came across a lot of guys who worked in security firms. Usually for mining ops and gas exploration. Quite a few had been over the border to PNG (New Guinea is one of the most mineral rich pieces of land on the planet) and all had tales to tell about how the cities there - particularly Port Moresby - were truly scary. They did not go the route of alcohol prohibition, and while Indonesia and the Dutch before slowly and systematically tried to steer the people away from everlasting tribal warfare, the Australians did not do the same when PNG was a protectorate in the decades following WWII. So you have a population of incredibly poor people watching their nations natural abundance being pilfered by rich countries, the wounds of tribal conflicts are very fresh, and they are on the sauce. Cities like Lae and Madang can be dicey, but Port Moresby is really no joke. You do not leave hotels unless it’s to go to embassies or corporate compounds. All essentially have paramilitaries protecting them. If you do go from one to the other, you’re in a vehicle designed for it (i.e. bulletproofed). Not the place to fuck around at all. So I love the idea of Tim bringing the kids over the summer!

Happy landings. Enjoyed the Dublin gig, especially getting lost trying to find the fucking hotel afterwards. Cheers.

I tried to get an auto-graph from Tim after his Brisbane show, but he spat in my face and kept shouting "Luxury! Now!" I stammered an apology and asked him what he meant, but he hit me with a concealed TASER and gave me 50,000volts

As an Aussie I’ve been waiting to hear your take on Australia! I missed out on tickets for your Sydney show so I hope you’ll be back in the near future 😊
