14:05 "What if I brought the edge out a little bit there?" I chuckled at this, because you sound like me! No room for this lovely plant I have? Well I guess I'm forced to sacrifice a few more inches of grass, what a shame. Happy gardening from 5b New Hampshire!

Thank you for keeping it real! Gardening is a dirty labor of love. I wondered if you have considered using power augers to aid in planting? When purchasing clearance plants, I remove dead or broken branches and leaves but I trim back the plants to allow the energy to be used for root growth instead of bloom production especially this late in the season. Always appreciate you showing the process regardless of how slow or dirty it may be. Editing is an ongoing process for me in gardening.

We actually have a few auger sizes that we use...for this spot we skipped it because we knew a sprinkler line ran through it and up front the ground was already all roughed up from removing the shrubs!

Love that you are cutting back and starting to pull up your garden. We too had some serious rain this week and I’m ready to start cutting back spent perennials and the few annuals I plant. The annuals actually look better than some of the perennials! Never certain when to cut back the perennials, but the deer and slugs help me want to clean up the tattered foliage. There is lots to get done before all the leaves start to fall and the temperatures dip. But this week is going to feel like summer!

I know we are told to leave things for winter, but with insect invaders and fungus and such we really like doing a lot of cleanup in fall. The good bugs can go live in the forever just behind our property!!

Glad you used native soil and dressed with compost... I was disappointed to see the defoliation, as that notion of supporting the leaves over root system is bunk and modern horticulturalists know that leaves are required for photosynthesis. Rose leaves are small and may even help with thorn punctures. On the other hand, what could have been removed were the hydrangea blooms, which can skew the shrubs to be top-heavy, and since roots are newly planted and not secure, always have the probability of causing branch breakage. Since blooms are only serving ornamental purposes, and not photosynthesis, they can be removed to conserve any water necessary to keep blooms turgid.
