This era shown is a masterpiece of aussie history which I got to witness from the early sixties onwards nothing complicated about cars then easy to fix for most, well I can't say the same about today's vehicle's whilst they have all the mod cons, they don't have any character to me they are sterile thanks for showing us a real Australia one that is sorely missed by me and I guess many others cheers

There were fewer regulations on car design back then (i.e. mandatory 5 mph bumpers). This allowed car makers to style their makes differently. Now most cars look generic and clones of each other.

Thanks Mark some great memories there. Interesting to see the double decker buses crossing the Iron Cove Bridge going to Gladesville and Ryde. I lived in Gladesville for a few years in my early childhood. A lot of people today are unaware Sydney had one of the world's biggest urban tramway networks. They were ripped out from 1961 with the transition to buses seen as a better option. The site where the "Iconic Opera House" is now, was a major tram depot with a big shed there. My mother used to get the tram to work from Gladesville to White Bay in Sydney.

@@markbehr88 Yes Mark its a bit "Off Topic" but seeing that photo of the bus on the bridge brought back many memories. Removal of the tram network was a mistake, it could and should have been upgraded like Melbourne. Sydney now has "Light Rail" but it does not service anything like the tram network did in its heyday!

@@shaun30-3-mg9zsNot only were Volkswagens assembled here , later moving to manufacturing, but I have seen it claimed that in 1960 VW outsold Ford here for number two sales spot. Likely helped by Ford in 1960 not making as many cars while converting to Falcon production with difficulties. The type 2 VW microbuses, utes and panel vans would also have less competition from Ford in that year too. No Falcon utes or panel vans until 1961. Not just the type 1 Beetles, but the type 2 commercial vans and type 3 sedans, station wagons, fastbacks and the very rare type 3 panel Van version of the station wagon. Made the Australia only Country Buggy before VW head office did the similar idea Thing buggy. Sales helped by VW Beetles winning and dominating so many round Australia trials that those rally trials stopped as they became so predicable as a win for VW beating all other cars large and small.

Hey Mark. The thumbnail image remided me of the Williamstown Road Ferry. Used before the Westgate Bridge was built. Williamstown Road Port Melbourne becomes Williamstown Road Spotswood. Story on its own really when you consider a long chain sat on the bottom of the River/Harbour so that it would not interfer with Shipping coming into Port Melbourne and the Ferry had to pull on the chain to get across. Day after day.

Hi Mark, the opening photo of the blue XK Falcon on the ferry was taken at Tumbulgum on the Tweed River, Northern NSW. 1n the mid 1970’s my father purchased the Flacks store and the green building on the right. Later on he established a marine centre there selling boats and outboard motors. The ferry is no longer there, being replaced by a bridge downstream, a little to the left of the photo. Cheers Bob.

Awesome stuff. If I had to give an award to a model that aged the best in terms of looking classic but without looking dated I'd have to give it to the XB/XC Falcon 2 Door hard tops. 3:10 I saw a new imported American Mustang on my walk this morning and I think those Falcon Hard Tops from the 70's still hold their own next to the modern yank Mustangs. The XC Cobras in particular are one of the best looking things to hit the road in Australia IMO. The other thing uncar related is how different it was taking a trip interstate before everything became standardized. Each State had it's own unique brand of Supermarkets, Department Stores and food chains. As a kid in the 70's going interstate almost felt like going to another country....that horse has well and truly galloped. (As a South Aussie living in Victoria about the only differences these days are Vics saying Kassle instead of Castle and Mowl instead of Mall. 🙄 )

Great stuff. I spotted a sign advertising TOOTH's beer , I remember Tooth's KB was sold for a while in NZ early eighties, and Dad would sometimes pick some up after a days fishing, and we'd slake our thirst with it , it came in a gold can with artificial condensation on it . Dad got to know about Tooth's beer in the Pacific islands in WW2 , having come into contact with Aussie's , and he thought it was a good drop. Are Tooth's still going ?

The Landliner bus @ 3.58 is quite an interesting vehicle, Australian designed and built although not really successful but technically ahead of it’s time, the driver operated from the centre and the Bus’s steerable “Bogie” was operated by Hydraulic rams or along those lines, I am pretty sure it was powered by Cadillac V8’s one driving the rear front axle and another driving the rear axle both simultaneously or individually depending whether a full load or going up hills, I think they were operated down on Victoria’s peninsula area and they were later sold to the Western Australian Railways or WAGR but were problematic and their power units and front bogie were removed and then turned into a trailer pulled by a prime mover as a “Semi-Bus”in Perth for a number of years

@@markbehr88 Thanks - if you mean "Z" plates ? At one stage, before self-government the "ACT" police were a part of the AFP, who drove "Z" registrations. Which were all the cars owned by the Commonwealth Government. The cars for the pollices were also "Z" plated, as were cars for APS general use. For some reason, those cars are now standard "ACT" usuallly starting "Y". Yep back when Sydney had the BIGGEST TRAM NETWORK IN THE WORLD. NO other city had the depth , spread and sheer mileage of tram network. Plus there were Newcastle & Woolongong trams TOO. Let alone the Tram Punt at the "Spit" in Sydney prior & after the first bridge was built, the trams squiggled their way down through what had been bush, on the Manly side, but is now prime real estate homes. I remember as a little kid going for the last tram ride in Sydney in 1961 and the to a kindergarten kid the frightening squash and surge of people, but Pa had a vice like grip of my hand then he put me on his shoulders so I had an "aerial" view, it was worth the ride however, I'm glad I went. Seems still so vivid in mind however now six and a half decades ago, amazing. AND Sydney sold a lot, I think near all of its new trams to Melbourne, and a few years later when on holidays in Melbourne with my parents, the lazy Melbournians had not changed the paper adverts glued on in frames in the trams cabin, STILLL HAD ADVERTS GLUED UP FOR "STUFF" LOCATED IN SYDNEY !!! what a bunch of winners !!
