Thanks Mark some great memories there. Interesting to see the double decker buses crossing the Iron Cove Bridge going to Gladesville and Ryde. I lived in Gladesville for a few years in my early childhood. A lot of people today are unaware Sydney had one of the world's biggest urban tramway networks. They were ripped out from 1961 with the transition to buses seen as a better option. The site where the "Iconic Opera House" is now, was a major tram depot with a big shed there. My mother used to get the tram to work from Gladesville to White Bay in Sydney.

@@markbehr88 Yes Mark its a bit "Off Topic" but seeing that photo of the bus on the bridge brought back many memories. @@shaun30-3-mg9zsNot only were Volkswagens assembled here , later moving to manufacturing, but I have seen it claimed that in 1960 VW outsold Ford here for number two sales spot. Likely helped by Ford in 1960 not making as many cars while converting to Falcon production with difficulties. The type 2 VW microbuses, utes and panel vans would also have less competition from Ford in that year too. No Falcon utes or panel vans until 1961. Not just the type 1 Beetles, but the type 2 commercial vans and type 3 sedans, station wagons, fastbacks and the very rare type 3 panel Van version of the station wagon. Made the Australia only Country Buggy before VW head office did the similar idea Thing buggy. The XC Cobras in particular are one of the best looking things to hit the road in Australia IMO. The other thing uncar related is how different it was taking a trip interstate before everything became standardized. Each State had it's own unique brand of Supermarkets, Department Stores and food chains. As a kid in the 70's going interstate almost felt like going to another country....that horse has well and truly galloped. The Landliner bus @ 3.58 is quite an interesting vehicle, Australian designed and built although not really successful but technically ahead of it’s time, the driver operated from the centre and the Bus’s steerable “Bogie” was operated by Hydraulic rams or along those lines, I am pretty sure it was powered by Cadillac V8’s one driving the rear front axle and another driving the rear axle both simultaneously or individually depending whether a full load or going up hills, I think they were operated down on Victoria’s peninsula area and they were later sold to the Western Australian Railways or WAGR but were problematic and their power units and front bogie were removed and then turned into a trailer pulled by a prime mover as a “Semi-Bus”in Perth for a number of years

@@Luke-PlanesTrainsDogsnCars I remember it as Lennons. In 1963 my parents picked up my sister and fiance at the airport and went straight there for breakfast. "We're closed" the waitress said. He put a ten pound note on the desk and demanded "Is that enough for you?". Do you remember the hypnotist Ron Ricco at Greenmount Beach, Coolangatta? And Mama Luigi's at the foot of Mt Cootha? Yes, I used to see A plate cars around. I thought they were just Federal Gov’t plates? 👍🤔
@petergraves20853 күн бұрын
@@markbehr88 Thanks - if you mean "Z" plates ? At one stage, before self-government the "ACT" police were a part of the AFP, who drove "Z" registrations. Which were all the cars owned by the Commonwealth Government. The cars for the pollices were also "Z" plated, as were cars for APS general use. For some reason, those cars are now standard "ACT" usuallly starting "Y". If you do see a "Z" registration on Canberra's roads, it means that it belongs to the AFP (Canberra's police drive ordinary "Y" series).

@@arnbo88 Yes that was reflected in the Australian Government’s limitations on the US$ and imports in favour of British. Personally, despite being a Commonwealth country, if it were not for the USA we would have been overrun by the Japanese, so my trade policy would have been the exact opposite. 🤔

Yep back when Sydney had the BIGGEST TRAM NETWORK IN THE WORLD. NO other city had the depth , spread and sheer mileage of tram network. Plus there were Newcastle & Woolongong trams TOO. Let alone the Tram Punt at the "Spit" in Sydney prior & after the first bridge was built, the trams squiggled their way down through what had been bush, on the Manly side, but is now prime real estate homes. I remember as a little kid going for the last tram ride in Sydney in 1961 and the to a kindergarten kid the frightening squash and surge of people, but Pa had a vice like grip of my hand then he put me on his shoulders so I had an "aerial" view, it was worth the ride however, I'm glad I went. Seems still so vivid in mind however now six and a half decades ago, amazing. AND Sydney sold a lot, I think near all of its new trams to Melbourne, and a few years later when on holidays in Melbourne with my parents, the lazy Melbournians had not changed the paper adverts glued on in frames in the trams cabin, STILLL HAD ADVERTS GLUED UP FOR "STUFF" LOCATED IN SYDNEY !!! what a bunch of winners !!
