Withington, in the Cotswolds, Gloucestershire, sits in an officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - and was once the home of a grand Roman villa.
Time Team's interest in the site didn't stop with this villa. Large quantities of Roman tiles and tesserae (mosaic pieces) have been brought to the surface in recent years by mole activity, and local archaeologist Roger Box has called in the Team to investigate.

I love this show, the history, the enthusiasm, the easy company, and the friendly teasing. It is lovely and a great escape from this stressful hate filled time. I'd love to be on site with them. But having said that watching this makes my knees hurt. I could not do the squatting and kneeling. I will have to remain an armchair archeologist.

In season 15, Channel 4 moved the final production from London to Cardiff and hired a whole new production team. That's when the asinine music, and new "youthful" personnel came on board. Evidently nobody bothered to notify Mick.

@Hannah_Em
@Hannah_Em 5 жыл бұрын
@@gwendolynfish2102 Broadly speaking, it ran from 1994 to 2013/2014, although Mick Aston left in 2012 as he felt that the format changes mentioned above had reduced the archaeological educational content in favour of being flashy (AKA "Dumbing Down"... something that, watching the later series 18-20 or so, particularly series 20 after Mick had left, I have to say I agree with). Mick Aston went on record as being pretty angry about the dumbing down, and sadly only about a year later in 2013 he died suddenly. As far as I know, the rest of the team are doing broadly the same things off screen as they did on screen; they all had (and have) independent careers in their respective fields (hence being recruited to the program), and so I would assume that they're continuing in those careers. Many of the archaeologists and other experts have also taken part in other public education projects, e.g. I happen to know that Guy de la Bédoyère and Alice Roberts (Roman expert and anthropologists, respectively), have both published books on their respective subjects, and I'd be surprised if that wasn't true of others who appeared on the program, too! One cool thing is that Victor Ambrus, the illustrator, was independently a celebrated illustrator long before his work on Time Team, winning multiple awards, prizes and accolades since at least the 1960s

I suppose it discourages incompetent amateurs and limits the amount of disturbance by professionals. Many of the TT sites are quite large. The few trenches that TT do put in often only cover a tiny fraction of the areas. It's surprising that they find as much as they do, even guided by geophysics. The case in England and parts of the mainland continent would be similar, so many huge sites, so few archeologists, that many sites will not be explored in the foreseeable future or only lightly explored, as TT does.
