Time to REACQUIANT OURSELVES with Ascension | Project Ascension S9 | ALL RANDOM Classless WoW | Ep.5

Mcdoubles back again with a brand new video and today I want to hop back on Project Ascension Classless WoW, Season 9, right before the introduction of their brand new Chapter, and see what I've been missing.
It's been a super long time since I've played Ascension in any meaningful way and so I felt like it might be wise to hop back on, check out the changelog for Chapter 2 which is releasing on May 3rd, and reacquaint myself with the game.
What I plan to do in this video, after checking out the changes coming with Chapter 2, is to level a character from 1-60 just to see what I'm getting myself into when I return on May 3rd, and I'll give my take on the current state of classless, a first impressions of sorts after so much time being inactive.

Wildcard talents was the worst the idea they have ever had. Normal Wildcard was only ok, but talent Wildcard killed it. Makes the game into a prestige grind simulator instead of an actual game you can enjoy. At least with Wildcard basic, you can build around the skills you get to try to turn it into something interesting. Can't do that in S9 Ascension, which is why I'm just waiting for all the ability, talent, and RE changes from S9 to be moved into Free Pick, the superior gameplay option even now

Always fun to jump back into Ascension from time to time. Only really do it when your videos pop up. With that said the damage bonus min/max stuff you mentioned is always the reason I eventually stop for a bit. I love to min max but so much of it in ascension feels like "insider" info.

The main issue I have with Ascension right now is just how much time you have to spend trying to get the abilities you want rather than playing. Just constantly prestiging and saving your darkmoon tickets because you want a rare ability to make your build complete but you can never reroll it. I feel CoA is the future of Ascension. They'll never do free-pick as the main server type anymore because they want you playing as much as possible to get your perfect build.

Yeah I think its literally impossible for me to push through. I just really do not like the game and feel like there's nothing to pursue or do on it anymore, and then this coupled with the insane RNG of Season 9 pretty much makes the entire thing unplayable to me. No matter how hard I try to push through and like it, I just haven't been able too.

There are like 3 meta builds that are heavily played in bg's whilst leveling, with most of those players having toon gear with insanely broken scaling due to manastorm caches, with enchants on both weapon and gear, mystic enchants and just as many random proc talents that they can find. No point trying to play BG's unless you are playing similarity, especially with a build that probably 3 people in total have tried to play. You just gotta play the game til' you get a build that is playable, and if you can't handle the grind you get a simple build that you can full card to farm scrolls for the spec you actually want.

Personal opinion on the classic tree rebalance at 5:30 : This is a good change for everyone , present and future . This opens up way more build potential and less pigeonholing into the main 1 or 2 meta builds . Changes like these are what make a classless server really classless . We WANT to more damage , we WANT to tank and heal better , it's literally the whole reason people pick a private server over retail/classic

4:50 While your concern is valid, this change greatly increases the feeling of actually somewhat progressing while leveling and even at max level when you're just rerolling for your build since all these fluff changes make these talents partially viable to hold onto. The number of dead talents you get while leveling is insane because 1 they do nothing for you and 2 they can open up rolling options that you don't want. Nothing worse than getting rogue abilities because of one 1/3 rogue talent you have that could get you combo points at 3/3. >.> 5:52 55k dps isn't due to these small %'s, it's due to synergies between legendary/epics all compounding upon each other with nearly every talent/ability slot being pushed to their maximum potential; which requires millions of marks and a godly amount of luck btw. Your scenario will have a lesser affect overall, imo, if anything it'll just help weaker builds catch up to the madness that is a near perfect build. (+12% healing with x,y,z spells, + 3% holy crit) vs (+12% healing with x,y,z spells, + 3% global crit) won't weigh in as much when you want as many of those bigger modifiers as possible that focus on your build. Instead of just insane damage modifiers of powerful abilities in pvp, they should look into a balance of pvp cd's changes and a small damage modifier, imo. So, something like: +50% cd and a -20% damage modifier. That'd still keep the lethality of high impact skills while preventing them from being spammed every other cast. This would promote skillful decision making in pvp by making you ask if you want to blow your load :3 on one person or do you want to save it for when the enemy team is stacked, there's a flag carrier, or something important etc. 25:25 hidden modifiers, go! 28:44 The season experience. :3 So, the best way to counteract this is situation, that can happen anyway, is by having lots of rerolls at lower levels so you can "hopefully" roll into things that you need when the rolling pool is as small as possible in the earlier levels. By level 60 you have so many possibilities to roll into that the %chance of rolling what you need/want is less than the odds of getting the time-lost protodrake from WotLK. I'm 100% being serious, it's annoying. :/ 29:59 thrown weapons don't count as ranged weapons, unless they modded it, making your hunter kit useless if you use one. :3

I play on Area 52. And it bothers me the same thing that bothers you - no actual information of values in the spells o abilities. In my case is as a mana tank, and I could have a lot of barriers from talents and spells. But the buff says "absorbs damage". How much?! I want to know if it's worth it or I better get anything else

Here we are, half way through season 9 and several gimmicks later, the game is almost unrecognizable to what it was then... AND STILL NO NORTHREND! I am kinda/sorta thinking farther ahead to when Wrath eventually comes out by leveling all professions on my main character. Since wrath has alot of power gains in each profession you could probably make a pretty op character, might take awhile.

Yra on Elune. Elune is my first experience in Ascension and I do agree to some of the things you said, the whole 20-30-40-50k dps SINGLE TARGET has bred a environment of elitists who gate keep the more challenging content behind meta builds that take the fun out of classless.

There's things that scale well, you need to prestige alot, you need to know when it's time to instantly scrap the build, 99% of the time you can't card anything that isn't legendary. There's talents that are base in every build like 5% crit talents, like the armor penetration package for pure melee, these are some things that you need to know before comiting to a real build. On average if you want to push 20k+ dps (with a normal amount of luck) you would need to go for like 2k rolls etc...Just some tips i could give out of blue. Edit: Also, my biggest advice is to plan your build in advance and when you prestige you need to aim for certain things that would tell you that the build is worth investing into, maybe do 2-3 specs of the same build and decide which one looks the best to invest into. Some people for some builds also like to do the x1 xp challenge to 20-30 and roll with the rolls you get from questing, makes it easier to get some important talents, that's how i rolled a good Dragon-war spec.

Classless had its time, but it is done. It doesn't feel the same. your power=your build which = your grind and 1000s of rerolls. Hope to see CoA sooner and run it down with necro or witch hunter. Currently filling up a QA spot on Duskhaven and Azeroth at War, both servers has a great potential, Duskhaven will come sooner tho and will be a banger. Maybe try to look those up as well!

I think that chapter 2 is going to fix most of what is wrong with this season. I’ve been trying to make a OWTL build (easiest to make by far) and had to prestige 9 times to roll something I felt good about. It does sadden me that you no longer enjoy wildcard. You were the biggest inspiration to me to start making ascension videos. I find that current build making system actually feels similar to path of exile, where theres a few starter builds that you should chase like One With The Light, Astral Storm, and Righteous Radiance. These practically build themselves and offer a powerful platform for you to farm the skill cards and marks necessary to achieve other desired builds. Maybe thats a bad direction for ascension to take and i am thinking about that, but ive felt an incredible amount of agency after my first few rerolls to slap together builds that I want. I truly do miss the weekly builds. I feel exactly the way you feel. I really wish the random things you roll were cohesive. I think a really fun, and super easy way to to fix that would be if you were able to pick an archetype. NOT a class, but say "holy," or "physical." That way you could never get rake, when you are using a paladin-esque build. Anyway, I truly can not wait to see more of your builds coming soon!

Yeah... the second they said this season was going to be wildcard over draft I knew this sort of crap was going to happen. Sure draft isn't the BEST gamemode, but at least with three options to pick from (and most of the talents freely pickable) it leads to at least *usable* builds most of the time with a few targeted rerolls.

Hey @McDoubles, I had an idea for a youtube video you could make! As you are a CoA dev and said you could make any spell, what if you make an educational video on how WoW works in the background? Like how a spell is made, how stats functions, how do you add a visual to a projectile spell or whatever you can think of :D I trully believe this will encourage people to probably start their own journeys on becoming devs or help out here and there. I feel ya. I want to love ascension, and I still kinda do, but the classless ideal just does not work with the base wow ability and talent system. I remember my first attempt i kinda rp'd a character as a dwarf witcher. Wanted to stack bleeds and posion on a 2h weapon. Even learned alchemy for the thematic fun. Sadly, no matter what i tried, that build was just not viable at the time i played. Questing felt great, but anything beyond normal dungeons I was useless. The power level for the game is way WAAY to high. And all the mythic+s is just a bandage for the wound. And yeah I think they have a 2h bleed now but it plays far different from what I like. the LREs make classes, they are just being disingenuous when they say they arnt. You have to build around one, outside of maybe one or two very specific builds that done need one, to be comparable to everyone else.

I think the reason they went in the direction of keeping this more general is because with Wildcard there is a very high chance you roll a talent and it is just a dead talent. I think the idea is to hack less talents that are just really specific to a certain thing because than a majority of them are just useless. Considering there are only 3 secondary stats in the game other than AP and SP I think its smart to let some of that specificity go. I know there is talk of power creep but I think that is less of a problem when there are things like M+, Manastorms, and Raid Trials that can scale infinitely. Giving players to tools to be OP and then letting them settle into their spot where they think the content is challenging enough is the right way to design content like this. I also dont think it will be such a big problem since a majority of talents people want arent the generic ones. While those are good for keeping your power up while you build they arent so strong that you could pump crazy numbers and compete. At the end of the day those synergy talents are going to outweigh any of the generic talents.
