Gonna disagree with ya on this one. The financial hardship most people are feeling is real, and because of that they’re going to think twice about spending $12k-$15k on a sub, or $25k on a Daytona. They won’t only think twice, they’re more likely to be unable to do it even if they want to. What happens when all the people / flippers selling their watches can’t get anyone to buy? The supply & demand curve. The price will decrease to try and entice a buyer. I think we’ll see a further downturn due to continued high inflation which eroding people’s disposable income. The question is how long can flippers have a stock of watches that is earning them $0? But I’m not buying and selling Rolexes like Christian, so I don’t have any inside knowledge. Just more of a macro economic overlay onto the watch market.

@@polygoncoco I think you’re right. A vast majority of people buying now will be the wealthy. But that raises the question, how many boring black dial subs, OPs, etc. does every single wealthy person need? If they don’t each need 5, then the listing prices will likely decrease to lead to a sale as opposed to flippers sitting with stock that no one is buying. I don’t think most businesses can survive with all their capital tied up earning $0. They need to pay wages, they need to pay bills, so they need to sell watches some time.

To much money chasing too few goods, man those days are over. We’re at the very early innings of cashflow disruption due to higher interest rates continuing to climb cycle after cycle if they follow what they promised. Good video. I personally don't necessarily think the secondary market will ever find true stabilization. It is now clear to so many buyers that the secondary dealers were essentially playing the same games as the ADs by holding inventory and selling to other dealers which artificially drove prices sky-high. The prices were a result of supply and demand but much of the supply issue was artificial on the secondary market side. I own a SS Daytona. Would I pay 45k? No. Would I pay 25k? No. I paid retail for it. The only watches I have purchased on the secondary are vintage. Most of my other true watch collector friends say the same thing. While I get that my circle only represents a tiny portion of the market, I think it does speak to the mindset of those that actually want these watches vs seeing them as an asset class. We are entering a period where "parking 25k" in a watch won't make sense when you can take that same 25k and use it to purchase meaningful assets that are basically on sale as a result of this coming recession. 2023-2024 is going to be a wild ride for many and I don't see the watch market, especially a secondary which is primarily controlled by cash-strapped backpack dealers, being able to hold inventory and weather the storm. But I also agree that a return to retail or below on the secondary is unlikely for most Rolex references.

We aren’t at the bottom yet. Just saw a John Mayer Daytona on Chrono for $68K. This watch was listed $130-140 in May. We’re in the 4th inning of this recession. Continual rate hikes are going to kill spending power. Even if the person isn’t borrowing for the watch, now their mortgage is higher which translates to less disposable. Just a simple example. It’s going to keep trickling down
@ge48421
@ge48421 2 жыл бұрын
I have a 30 year fixed mortgage, when the rate is low you should just lock it in. My mortgage does not go up, so that's a bad example. Personal loans will go up, and if you bought a Daytona on credit you may get a double whammy, your loan payments go up and the value of the watch goes down. Investing on margin is very lucrative when prices go up and money is cheap, but will kill you when the reverse happens, your asset tanks and servicing you loan gets expensive. Leverage works both ways. As long as inflation does not get under control we'll see interest rate hikes, and I expect that more people will be forced to sell which will lower prices.

Nope… it didn’t take rocket science to figure out that the black industry would be a great place to drop them cash this year, along with going short on the IWDA.L as everyone with two cents worth of 🧠 could see the Biden administration was spewing BS about inflation early on. Just added a bunch of REIT’s yesterday to the portfolio. Much better than believing a mass produced, in the millions, wear and tear steel item is a “safe” investment😂😂😂 If you could short Rolex watches… maybe then📉🤓

Do you think the two tone Daytona black dial or two tone submariner blue dial will still be safe buys at retail? I’m on the list for both of those and my AD seemed confident they could get them for me early 2023 but I don’t know if they’re even trading over list anymore

Please allow me to pitch in here. I’m out of trading, but still have access to the dealer chats I was part of and some online groups. TT Daytona hit about retail late July- early august between dealers and flippers on closed auctions. If you try and flip or sell to a grey dealer, you’ll be hard pressed trying to break even. If you sell private to and end user, you can make some money, but this comes with a risk. Expect to sell for around 20-21k today if unused with everything. But… have in mind, they are not an easy flip. There several listed at low 20’s but they aren’t moving. Oh… and the 228235 is trading at 52.5k$ fully sticker, and as low as 47k naked. 116500 is trading low 20ish. I like Theo and Harris, but they are not on point regarding value.

Socks are falling, I think this could also affect other assets. Too many profits have flowed into assets that do not generate returns. If I can get 3.7% p.a. for 3 years, why should I but a Rolex instead?

I won’t pay $10,000. Or more on any watches if it doesn’t have a precious metal on it. A gold watch may get you out of a problem one day if needed an if is not then it will continue to be a beautiful gold watch.

Most ave Rolex watch’s are worth the cost of a use Honda Accord. Rolex is just not that big a deal. Plus if you try to daly one you may get robbed. I don’t see the point of them anymore. Plus Rolex customer service is trash.

Eventually in a few yrs time prices will drop because people will be scared to buy and wear watches. I’m convinced with increasing crime it will become dangerous and less popular to buy and wear fancy watches. For me the robberies was the reason to sell my Pepsi unfortunately ☹️.

I hate people that buy watches to put them at the bank as an investment. It is simply a tax avoiding strategy on top of making watches enthusiast frustrated. If watch manufacturers find a way to make their product traceable, those gains could be also traceable and it would possibly put a dent on watches theft. Under such a scenario the bottom price could be much lower than it is now.

Suckers rally coming. Both on the stock market, real estate, and watches. But watches are different because Rolex will keep on making product. The NIB flipper market is going to stabilize at MSRP + Tax + ~20%. That's 10% for the flipper and 10% for the dealer. When the market price goes lower than that, the pipeline of AD to flipperscum will shut off. The secondary market has "stabilized" because the "my precious" crew are HODL right now. Dealers aren't buying. If you loved the watch, why are you selling? We haven't flushed out the flipperscum yet. Eventually they will capitulate.

Negative ghost rider the pattern is full. Lol. Time to buy a Rolex will be next year in Mid 2023. Here in the states we're in a technical Recession. Inflation is still up 8.5% and change, Groceries is still up, and Gas is still high...lol. Wait till the housing market collapses and then you'll see some real pain. People forget, first thing to go is Luxury Goods. It will be eerily similar to 2008-2009 recession.

Is it just me or is there a low battery smoke detector chirping in the background? Heard it for a few videos now (they film these in batches). "Didn't think we'd notice...but we did," lol. Jokes aside, I think the Rolex market will continue to squeak down. No more plunges, but a slow decline. It won't be due to a change in supply, but due to a slowing of demand. Economy is taking a huge hit, layoffs are coming, house values are falling, inflation is eating into folks. Just think people are going to be less inclined to splurge in these conditions. And this definitely qualifies as a splurge.

its actually pretty simple, stock market tanks, so does the grey market pricing, all global financial markets are tanking and will continue if everyone is predicting a recession next year in the US. Back to the days where the majority of grey market prices are below retail please.
