I am several hours north of the border (Canada) and I grow longs and intermediates. No shorts here, no, no, no! Intermediates do fine, though, but do not keep as long into the winter before they start waking up, greening in the core. I sell them off first. I grow about 10 varieties each year, generally, selling them into local market over the fall and winter. I grow Yellow of Parma and Australian Brown, producing seed from both. I have no issues keeping seed three years, sometimes longer, although the germination rate does start noticeably waning by then. But when using the overseeding method, such as demonstrated here, that is not so much of an issue, especially if you are producing seed because you should have lots of seed. Just sow it more thickly when the seed is in decline. To get storage years out of this seed, use airtight jars after being sure your seed is properly dried down, and place them in the freezer. Label them! Make, model, and year! I have pretty much followed this method after some years of trial and error. I prefer to use 5 inch pots instead of trays, placing those pots into a solid 10/20 tray into which I can pour water for bottom watering and the odd little bit of water soluble starter fertilizer, once they are established. I like using pots for more depth of root. But I may try using a tray this year. The trays I used were not 10/20's but just clear clamshells from commercial produce. Plus at that time I wasn't bottom watering. So...I can see where this will be much better. I keep them trimmed to about 4 inches. When it comes time to transplant, I wash them out outside, not to wash dirt down the drains, to complete bare root, keeping them in a ziploc bag in the fridge until it is time to plant, no more than 24 hours. Shelter your zip bag when outside in the garden so the sun doesn't overheat the contents.

@@noway9991 yes. That will immediately go to a different kind of plant, putting out a number of stalks that produce an umbrel or ball of little flowers on the ends. You have to put in a stake and use a couple string lengths to hold in all the stalks or you will have a mess as they fall over in the breeze. Let them go until the seeds are mature and starting to open up. You can go in with a paper bag or tray, periodically ,and shake out the heads to drop any ripe and dried down seeds. I just wait until they are mostly mature (yes, many will have dropped to the ground, but I do about 8 plants, so there is an abundance) and cut all the heads into a tray and leave them in a dry warm sunny location to finish drying down, then shake them out, trying to avoid getting too much chaff in there.

@@scout7060 exactly. Take last year's onion that you have wintered in storage in a dry cool location and plant it out. (I have not tried leaving them in the ground, but if I were to do that, I would put a good thick covering--at least 8 inches--of straw, over the plant. Try it and see what happens.) Cage your seed onion plant or the leaves will fall or break. Wait until the umbrels start dropping mature seeds, then cut them off and put them in a tray in an airy, warm, dry location to dry down completely before processing.

CONCERNING THE 16 HOURS OF ARTIFICIAL LIGHT = many of you have already asked about starting the long day onions with 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness.... you will have ZERO issues starting this way because onions detect CHANGES in the day length and not just the actual hours of daylight... so when the solstice comes and the days begin getting shorter the onion will soon realize the season is past its zenith and it will begin to bulb... so long as you leave it at a constant 16/8 using a timer you will have wonderful success my friends I know this from my own first hand experience!!

@@gardenlikeaviking Post harvest update on Yellow of Parma onions (10/4/23). I grew the Yellow of Parma alongside some Yellow Sweet Spanish also from Baker Creek. The Yellow Sweet Spanish outperformed the Yellow of Parma somewhat, consistently larger, nicer bulbs but bear in mind I'm a beginner with onions so I grew them in (self-induced) sub-optimal conditions. For example I had no idea how much water an onion crop really needed, a LOT it seems, I think they should have had about twice as much water as I gave them. I've since watched your short video regarding planting depth (the board method). My depths were all over the place, I pulled some onions where the bulbs were 2-3" below the surface which I now realize is probably why they didn't bulb up well. For that matter many of the Yellow Sweet Spanish were too deep as well and as a result didn't bulb up quite as expected but the majority did better overall. It was obvious regardless of the variety that my best bulbs were the ones planted the shallowest where the bulbs formed almost entirely above ground. This is a new garden spot this year and I haven't built a deer fence yet. One thing I noticed is that the deer pretty much left the Yellow of Parma alone while they ate the tops off most of the Yellow Sweet Spanish for whatever that's worth. I personally can't tell much difference between the two varieties but the Yellow of Parma are supposedly more pungent/strong than the Yellow Sweet Spanish which may explain the deer behavior. So "deer resistance" I guess, fence incoming. :) Overall I'm pretty stoked with my onion crop, I'm calling it a success but I think I can do better next year. I ended up putting away about 20-ish lbs of nice bulbs between the two varieties and I've been using the smaller ones for cooking for the last couple months and will continue using them up for another month or so. I plan to grow both varieties again next year but I'll do a few things differently, mainly I'll be trying your board method to get the planting depth right, putting them in earlier, and giving them a lot more water especially when the bulbing starts. Really want to say thanks for all the gardening info over the past year or so Nate, you're the real deal my friend and I've observed the positive effects of your suggestions with my own two eyes many times. I'm definitely a more successful gardener as a result! Thanks, love your channel, keep up the great work!

All my veg is germinating quickly with no heat mat or lights, I do sieve the compost twice but add no perlite or vermiculite, I ain’t got any, I do put a lid over the pots tho until germinated. Got used to this way, and works for me but I’ve got 15years of growing experience. Only 1 on my allotment. 👍🏻🤠🙏💗🌘

Short day onions in a long day area(New England)??? my garden generally gets 8 hrs of full sun. Tree Leafs come in around mid May and that’s when the garden becomes heavily shaded til noon, then it’s full sun til sunset. Everyone’s says you can’t successfully grow short day onions up here. Because I never get more than 8 hrs of full sun…long varieties always under perform, I was thinking short day onion would probably grow perfectly in this situation. Is there more to it…Any thoughts or suggestions? Thank you Frank

I started onions from seed - should not have put them in the hoop house when they were growing like crazy - but it got HOT here in IN - which I just found out from Pinball that you're here too. It's February 3rd and I'm so scared that I'll start my seeds too early. We don't have a ton of space inside so I can only start a few plants indoors. But I also live in a climate where starting seeds indoors is critical to get the plant to grow a good sized vegetable. I was thinking based on what I've learned from your page and others, that I should start my onions and greens (carrots & beets too) indoors mid February. Right now I'm just trying to find a few good verity's for my climate. I'm just worried that even mid February could be too early to start seeds. In tropics you still suggest the heat mat to compensate for night Temps that are lower? They are having issues with onion right now getting them to grow, even from seed and the prices are way up. But it's been raining a lot keeping Temps down.

I have wondered if it's because of the large amount of rain that we have been getting, as it's my understanding onions are considered to be a root crop and from what I hear... root crops don't do well in soil that's holding an excessive amount of water... but I dunno. The conspiracy theorist in me says they're probably all headin' to the global elite bunkers... Ha !!

Great video and nicely edited. The only thing you indicated was 16 hours and 8 hours off on the timer. I understood that is 12 hours on and 12 hours off for the Long Day variety. If you allow 16 hours it will trigger bulb formation which you don't want until you plant them outside.

no I stated it correctly 16 on and 8 off... what triggers onions is actually the CHANGE in daylight hours as the days go by... you can be fully confident in my experience that 16 hours of daylight is exactly what the long day onions want and need when started indoors like this.

Nate, great video. I followed your instructions to the tee. Sow my Ruby Red long Day onion seeds on Feb 19th. Today, Feb 22 germination started with about 40 plants popping up through the soil just since this morning. Giving them the 5 elements you preached, plus for extra credit I planted according to the biodynamic planting calendar on a "root" day.

anywhere from 8 to 16 weeks is good... we keep trimming them to stay about 5-6 inches in height so we want them nice and thick by the time we plant them out

we fertilize them the exact same as all other seedlings which I will soon make a separate video to illustrate... but sadly yes I did forget to include that I keep them trimmed to about 5 inches give or take.... thank you for reminding me!

I am starting sets , I have started the growth on wet kitchen paper under light, most are up and running. Now they are in compost bottom watering. Hoping to fool them to start bulbing when outside. Time will tell.

good job!!... coffee grounds are best added to the soil because worms absolutely love them and so do many of the arthropods and really the entire soil food web... sprinkle liberally onto the soil

Interesting thing happened. I'm in 4B and started onion seeds on heat mat with good LED light on timer as you recommended. 15 amp breaker kept tripping when the only things drawing current were the mat and light using 210 watts. Found breaker is Arc Fault required by code in bedrooms when home was built. Timer has a tiny spark when it comes on and that's the cause. I ran extention cord from a non bedroom for timer and light and that solved the problem.

you will see the tops start to fall over at the neck where the bulb meets the foliage... when about half of them start to fall over its time to pull them all... I'll make a video soon on that... here we still have another week or two I reckon

yes absolutely if you have an onion that overwintered you can plant it this spring about mid April and it will produce a flower with seeds that can be saved for the following season

if we're talking about onions then once they are mostly all germinated you can move them off the mat and to an area that is about 60-75F and they will grow best that way

If you need to control several heat pads from one controller, you simply link them all together with a power bar. I put the probe in a glass of water that sits in a tray that is on one of the pads. This controls the entire set from one location.

whoa!!.. I never even thought of that!... but it initially seems to me like there could be a very significant amount of "drift" so the last heat mat is 20+ degrees hotter than the first... obviously you have tested yours???

@@gardenlikeaviking no, they all turn off and on at the same time. They are all plugged into a power bar which is itself plugged into the controller. No issues. I've been doing it this way for a few years, mostly to control trays of peppers and tomatoes.

I've seen on some other channels that they don't recommend more than 10-12 hours for onions. What is the significance of 16 hours? I don't really understand how day length works for each region. I just know I am a long day.

onions are triggered to bulb based on the CHANGES of day length and not just the total hours... rest assured 16/8 set on a timer is the way to go!

@@rebeccawatson9284 no you can switch them to 16/8... just make sure you have a timer that keeps it at that time interval and they'll be fine... if you keep them at 12/12 they'll be as small as pencil lead and thats it.
