Now, I use Hip Hop to teach kids language arts in school, so I try to keep up with the culture and get some practice in when I can so what I teach is relevant and reflects the scene.

Breaking is definitely a sport. When I was active, the amount of training people would do was insane. Good breakers make these power moves look easy, but Sunny has a history of gymnastics which helps. The 2000s are def an advanced move. I couldn't do it, nor 1990s, which are supposedly easier.

There isn't any point structure in breakdancing to make it into a sport. It has already gone downhill with a new generation of kids who have no rhythm and will start spinning on their heads with no music. Dancing to the beat has been long lost to power move kiddies. Popping and Locking is more fun to watch at this point, but none of this belongs in the olympics.

O" yes the car cruising on Hollywood Blvd and sunset. In the 70s. On the walk of fame, the sidewalks with the radios blasting with anything to be used as a cushion on the concrete, we're some of the most dangerous moves, dancing break dancing, what is now a sport. But back then it was a historical part of Los Angeles. And the artist, the rap songs of the times who made break dancing an art. With only one gol to have a great time and they did with hundreds of others of that generation. We will never forget those good times in Los Angeles and the memories this new generation brings back from the real break dance error those 1970s.. Because there's no stopping us.

Awww this takes me back. Idk if I ever was meant to be a b-girl, but if nothing else breakdance taught me that dancers are some of the kindest most generous ppl you will meet. At my college everyone taught every else. There weren't ever classes- just community. It was a wonderful, exciting and challenging experience. Frankly one of the best things I've ever done. They saw how Asians were adopting breaking within their culture( most likely fostered by yt's) and decided they could use it as a wedge between FBA's and Asians. Why else would they even have breaking in the Olympics? It's not a widespread sport that is recognized outside of black culture. Yt's saw this as a chance to approrate more of black culture and give it to another race as a token. When a Asian wins the breaking gold medal, the yt's will give them all the credit and pretend FBA'S didn't even invent it.

Instead of considering it as appropriation, it's a sign that something created by one community achieved such success and cultural relevance that it went beyond its original birthplace and was embraced by a larger audience. It's a great sign of cultural affluence and recognition actually. It happened to Japanese anime, Korean doramas, Nordic "neo-Viking" trends, and Brazilian beauty trends adopted by Americans and Europeans...

When they go out of their way to ignore and not give credit to the specific community that created it and whitewash the entire thing then that is cultural appropriation. Similar to reggaeton, rock and roll, jazz, blues, house music, techno, etc. I've actually met with and speak to the original B boys/break dancers here in New York City that started the whole thing in the late 1960s and they get little to no credit and or attention. Trixie, Sasa, Dancing Doug. They could have invited them to these news networks that are covering this breakdancing event and have them judge the competitions and be commentators. All rival gang members stopped fighting n started battling thru hip hop. In nyc these ppl were Jewish, Caribbean, asian, etc. And they all contributed to the creation. When it went out of vogue in the 80s, some ppl kept dancing but poor ppl in France, korea, etc. All took that hip hop torch n kept it alive when it came to the element of bboying. Breakdancing took inspiration from asian moves. Breakdancing was blacks n Puerto Ricans from day 1 and all other former gang members n dance crews joined soon after. So it was cultivated multi ethnically w inspiration from asians. And Koreans were world champions from the 90s on on a regular basis. So seeing asians in the breakdance scene is decades old. So u may not actually be qualified to speak on the culture if u dont know all this.
