Not to take anything away from Gus, but the “title” for the first openly gay winter olympian is at least a tie with Adam Rippon the figure skater. Gus came out a few weeks before Rippon in 2015, but Rippon qualified first for the 2018 Winter Games. So technically it`s Adam Rippon. I wish them both luck.

U.N. Owen This is about being the first “openly gay Winter Olympian”. Gus was not out in 2014, so it does not count here. There have been a number of gay Olympians throughout the years, who were not out during their active years. Jonny Weir, figure skater, comes to mind in more recent history. (2006/2010). BTW, if you make the team and show up you are an Olympian whether you medal or not.

There are still consequences in most societies for being gay in terms of negative treatment in laws, and reactions to it. People need to realize that gay people are among them in all areas of their lives. From that it leads to the eventual end of oppression.

Ben Bailey Maybe the first AMERICAN to be openly gay. There are many openly gay/bisexual Olympians in the dutch team (and other teams). Its no big deal if you are gay in our team/country. Hell Ireen Wust is bisexual and she is officially the best speed skater with 5 gold metals. Its a good thing to be openly gay cause not only is he a rollmodel to others but the more people come out the more normal it will be and that will change opinions about it. It is no big deal to be gay. But he isn't the first openly gay Olympian...not by a long shot.

D the rainbow flag stands for unity and equality, it may be used by a community that loves the same gender but displaying the rainbow flag is just like displaying ones flag for ones country. One can display both. No one has that hold or power to tell someone what to do or not do. On February 2 he will be skiing in red white and blue not some rainbow ski uniform but so what if he wants to hold an American flag and an lgbt flag. Support him as an athlete and a community member.
