@Andrew Szeto, if you end up using your cabin in winter, a small version of rocket mass heater may be nice, slowly releasing heat through the night, even after the wood is consumed. Good short video is: What is a rocket mass heater? (at "paul wheaton" channel) Rocket stoves burn so hot that they burn the creosote and smoke before anything goes up the chimney, avoiding risk of chimney fires and causing little air pollution. I've never had one, but they look easy to build and use just a fraction of wood that a wood burning stove uses to heat the same space. Anyway, I enjoyed the video. I love the quality of the workmanship. I hope you have many wonderful stays in your cabin.

That was great! I have been looking for ideas of how to put together an A-frame house and this is one of the best videos I have found yet. "Butt crack"! Had you included that for my young daughter. Big smiles. I was curious about the chicken wire. I can see minimizing your need for plyboard but it would seem a plastic moisture barrier would have been a preventative addition before the insulation. I really appreciated the shortcuts that I think will lessen the need for muscle.
@AndrewSzeto2 жыл бұрын
cheers! the chicken wire (which i should have gotten smaller even), was for rodent prevention!
@ZebraFacts2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewSzeto My wife and I are planning to build a small A-frame cottage for temporary living space while we finish building our house. I have a little knowledge of building but my wife doesn't. I was explaining to her that a moisture barrier is very important. I plan to plastic between the ground and the structure. Then plywood. Rodents, snakes, and other creepy-crawly things will find a way through any chicken wire. We will probably use coco wood, as it is cheaper where our home is. Most people in that area don't treat any wood, so it tends to deteriorate quickly. I'm planning for our cottages to last a lot longer. I just started watching your videos so I don't know how your mouse-in-the-house situation turned out. I hate killing things but I had mice scurry across my face in the bed. I found the only thing that solved mice in the house quickly is the one-dollar sticky traps with a little bate in the middle of them. The hard part for me is removing the traps after they catch mice and rats. They are cute little creators but can be very deadly.

Very cute build! I’m thinking “they are going to cook in that thing” due to all the insulation. My family has a very similar A-frame camp, 14’x16’ but the walls are just wide tongue-and-groove boards milled locally, no insulation. It’s got an old antique wood cookstove that has an oven and water heater, and the camp interior during Maine’s cold winters is so hot we have to open the windows to let cold air in or we’ll roast to death, LOL.

Great build! I have some land in the mountains of western Maryland and plan to build a small cabin as well. Your videos are inspirational! Your A Frame looks like its 10 ft by 10 ft. I'm planning on a 10 x 16 cabin - a little bigger but hopefully manageable. Thanks for sharing!
@billfrederickfrederick27914 жыл бұрын
My son and I built an equilateral A frame , floor and both sides are 16 foot...Length is 24 foot so that adds up to 384 square footprint set on some concrete blocks...When we built the A frame cabin I had visions of an upstairs loft , you know the whole bit....We were able to make a very small loft....( big disappointment )...with the wood stove burning the temperature in the loft is quite unbearable.. (impossible for sleeping )....If the sguare footage of the little A frame in the video is 10 x 10. That means my A frame is almost four times as big , and I can honestly say that my A frame is WAY too small for any more than two people . If your dream is to have " a little cabin in the woods " , believe me when I say a little cabin , is just that , too little ! Pretty soon you'll be making plans for an addition . Yes , an A frame is very strong and able to withstand tremendous snow loads that could likely collapse a lesser dwelling , but there is a lot of wasted space.....If I had it to do over , I wood forget about my "little cabin in the woods " , and build as big as I could afford cabin in the woods

When did they level the base build? Seems like by leaving a tarp underneath that would cause a lot of pooling water and subsidence.
@AndrewSzeto5 жыл бұрын
there is a bit of pooling water, but not a ton. it's generally bone dry through the spring/summer and fall. we leveled the base with a laser level and ensured that we squared everything up. Will jack and fix things if it moves with the freeze-thaw cycle.
