​@@augustineacevedo37It's a combination of soft inner flesh being relatively flexible, and the fact they take in excess amounts of water into their bodies, forcefully cracking the weak joints of their shells. Their new shells are very soft and haven't grown in yet. Crabs do something similar, and they are eaten as a delicacy while in this "soft shelled" state.

Uk. 40+? yrs ago the bf and I brought home a simple bucket of sea water from north wales and added it to a prepared tank of salt water. It was astonishing the invisible baby critters that were in there. I remember some shrimps, crabs and shellfish but there were probably more. The crabs were the primary predators so eventually killed other residents. The final result was us having 2 crabs. One of each sex. They bred, the boy holding onto the girl from behind for days. After he released her there was some time before he shed to his soft skin. It was then that the female decided to attack and she killed and ate him. We watched her ‘apron’ expanding as her eggs developed. Seeing she was pregnant, we drove back to north wales to the same beach we’d taken the water from, and released her. We also found a 3ft ragworm in the sand of the tank, such a bonus, we’d no idea it had existed, and released that too.
