The team face digging through a church graveyard in search of what could be one of the largest Roman structures ever built in Britain. Tony Robinson and his band are here at the request of the Reverend William Burke, vicar of the historic St Kyneburgha's church in Castor, Cambridgeshire. Under very close supervision, the Team must dodge the thousands of burials in the graveyard to get to an ornate mosaic floor.

We all adore Phil and Mick, we recognize the platinum value of Tony and his true Narrative gifts, but also, over time and the numbers of shows watched, it has become clear that Stewart and Helen are/were the weights that added the balancing harmony of this Production. The total having been the Success of this Show. They added what was required for us to enjoy so many episodes of enjoying the interactions of Phil, Mick, and Tony, and their torturing of John, Rakshar, and Matt, a true Team-Player! Love Matt. ...and everyone appreciates an Artist and their works. I adore Helen and feel she gave such a value to the energy balance of this show. Likewise I find immense value in Landscape Archaeology and and Stewart's works are what I've come to look forward to in each show. When I see a show absent of these 2, I immediately lose interest and scroll for another. The few I've watched w/o them are a pale comparison. I haven't quite figured out the Timeline of the Individuals but it seemed to have evolved well and then there's a wacky shift that loses the energy that makes it so fabulous a treat to watch. But, I didn't watch Time Team when it was current, I'm a USA KZbin viewer. Those obvious in not mentioned - "if you can't say something nice ..."

A praetorium is the seat of the praetor, a local or regional official in the Roman bureaucracy. I would have liked to hear more about Kyneburgha. Helen is a gem: "Everybody likes something to pretty as well as functional... like my hat." What a great show, in a great series.

You have to keep in mind that they were digging in a graveyard. They needed special permission to be able to do it. Plus they had to be careful not to disturb the remains. They could have been in serious trouble for desecrating the graves. People have been arrested for that so they had to be extremely careful.

I think the church is there because that's where the praetorium was located. When the Anglo-Saxons arrived they asked the locals, "who owns this?" and they said "the government". The Anglo-Saxons said, "Well we're the government now, so it's ours". Later an Anglo-Saxon king gave the land to the church, as they often did.

I was taught that for some 50 to 100 years in many parts of England and Europe in general there was an effort by some to wipe out Roman, Norman or "Viking" ruins. Would not this be a possibility here. Known Roman architecture demolished with out reference in the attempt to "Erase" them from the areas History?

I would guess that it was just seen as old stuff, junk. My hometown Hamburg (Germany) went through a phase in the latter part of the 19th Century, the old Half-Timbered Houses were seen as outdated, dirty and such, and they were almost all torn down. I personally would not she a tear for any Architecture from the 1960s and 1970s, it looks horrible - yet 2000 years from now it may be seen as a time period lost and gone.

What a delightful gentleman ( I use the term advisedly) the parson is. He who can read the Greek testament. Alas for my little Latin and non existent Greek. But, is he a rector or a vicar? The caption when he first appeared called him rector, but the video prologue calls him vicar. Rector and vicar are very different things . Still good English parson stands for all, and let the tithes fall as they may.

Funny thing! Usually there is a sober but respectful regard for those buried, whether individual or a mass burial. Here, the dead are for the most part ignored. I assume the bodies will be gathered as well as possible and given a respectful re-burial or taken to a lab and storage facility, treated properly. Or are you just going to push soil back on top again and jump up and down over the fact you found a tile floor?

If it is a preatorium, or a country house occupied by a governor, it would have had a temple to Jupiter in the grounds. It will have been converted into a church. This area would have been overrun by Vikings and the temple become a ruin. So when the church was built, it was not built on top as usual but immediately beside the rubble of the temple ruin to minimize cartage.

Time team ran across many of Artis's drawings and plans, some were spot on, most were not. Most of his plans and drawings are what he thought things looked like. It was after the first few times in the run of the show following his drawings that time team started to use his drawings with a grain of salt, you could say, being careful not to say the drawings were absolute unless there was archaeological evidence to back it up lol.

Why do they only have three days? It takes time to excavate and rushing only causes mistakes. Why not have the team work for weeks or months? I get they have deadlines but you don't need the same host and I think they would find better stuff if given the time.
@milwaukeejt
@milwaukeejt 3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts, for whatever they are worth to anyone. 1) This is television. Spending all season at one dig would be boring, as long-term excavation is inherently tedious, with long stretches of nothing new. Long-term is also expensive. Combine expensive with boring, and you have a canceled tv show. 2) The owners/controllers of the sites have say as to whether extensive digging is wanted or permitted. Many of their sites are "registered" and the amount of digging allowed is strictly limited by law. Many other sites are on private property. The land owner may want verification as to what is there, but have not yet decided whether they are comfortable having extensive excavation done on their land. Finally, more extensive digging requires significant financial backing. Organizations like universities require evidence of likely return on investment before committing funds. The work of Time Team helps to inform those decisions. 3) Exposure of ruins has a potential downside. They can degrade from exposure to the elements, vandalism/theft, wear and tear from visitors, etc. 4) This approach provides variety for the viewers: different eras, cultures, settings, types of evidence, etc. are presented. It also provides a foundation for more extensive work, if it is desired.

Another reason is that most of the people involved probably had day jobs at universities/museums/etc, so the digs were done over long weekends.

can someone explain why they always just get so little time at each site? is it due to it being a series or is there some legal process behind? or is that simply standard practise, to see what you can get in a few days and so find out if its worth spending more time with? it just seems like sooooo little time.
