11:17 - 11:45 that scene with the governor and Kuvira is amazing since it really establish what kind of character Kuvira is, she is both a prodigy metal bender but also diplomat, the line when she says "You have a lot of pride but it cannot save your people, your pride will not stop the hoards and your city crumbles and your pride will certainly not feed your hungry when all that is left is rubble... you will perish, unless you take my generous offer." and as you saw Kuvira is right by the Governor own words his state is on the brink of collapse and he is not accepting Kuviras offer because of HIS pride.

i always thought of kuvira as being a metal bending prodigy , we have seen lin and su and they are great but the way kuvira fights has always been so different , more similar to su where kuvira gives you the metal and the pulls it right from under you , the way she was so calm when she split the rock with minimal force with the two pieces of metal sheets . Even the way she bends it seems like she has this magnetic control over it , she is very calculating and calm but like shows no mercy ...

Kuvira is kinda like the Fire Nation in the Last Airbender but with a major difference. The Fire Nation wanted to take over the whole world; Kuvira just wants to unite all the states in the Earth Kingdom that were thrown into chaos and ruin by the Red Lotus and the Earth Queen.

Given the opportunity, she probably would have tried to take over the entire world much like the fire nation try to do. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kuvira didn’t set up some of those raids on the smaller earth nation towns, and kingdoms to get them to join the Earth Empire.

First time watching S4 I didnt really get it and had trouble enjoying it. After rewatching the series though my perspective changed after realizing that the 100 year war was still relativly recent and in peoples minds. The earth kingdom fell because it was divided with many rulers to weak to defend against the fire nation. Kuvira knows what happened the last time the avatar disappeared and wants to avoid a second conquering. I dont agree with her methods, but that insight really helped me appreciate the season more.

This is personally the most aesthetic season, and I actually saw it before season 03, so it has a special spot in my mind cos s03 was notoriously hard to find (it barely aired on nickelodeon, and the web version was near impossible to get a hold of), so this season grew on me a lot more, it's still not better than s03, but it's definitely the prettiest if that makes sense lol.

Well the first 2 seasons were not great with a horrible love triangle. Korra and her development as a character were reset in season 2 because only one season was planned. Essentially the writers suddenly got clearance to make multiple seasons and didn’t have the whole story planned out in advance.

The basic villain mindsets/political ideals in Avatar so far I would summarize with: Last Airbender = Imperialism Korra S1 = Communism (+some slight cult vibes going on there... but then again that could be said for any charismatic villain really) Korra S2 = Theocracy I suppose... not really? idk. This one is a bit tricky since we never really had a giant spirit of darkness in our world Korra S3 = Anarchism. Yeah this one is preeeeetty obvious Korra S4 = Authoritarianism + a hint of Fascism (though its only shown briefly and sort of kept vague) Ofc this is all very much a case of "closest to our real world analogy I can think of" and not a perfect 1 to 1 in every single aspect of obviously much more complex topics than I care to write about in a comment section :D

Something the show doesn't do a great job of is reinforcing what it is Kuvira is actually doing. The "conquering" these people refer to is bringing states back to the Earth Kingdom after the recent conflicts and the assassination of the Queen created a power vacuum. As a result larger states were able to take advantage of it and essentially declare independence, meanwhile the fractured nature of the kingdom has allowed banditry to flourish and resulted in the starvation of people because goods are no longer being traded in the same way. The state featured in this one is not agricultural, its a mining focused region and so it likely relied on food imports from other parts of the kingdom in return for exports of raw mined materials. Kuvira is returning the kingdom to its normal. She is also doing this on behalf of the new Earth King (Prince Wu) with the full support of the United Republic (the President/Council) and other influential leaders. It is not confirmed but you can assume that United Republic support would likely also come with the support of the leaders of the Fire and Water nations. It is however, confirmed that her actions are with the support of the Air Nation as Tenzin is actively involved in the preparation of Prince Wu. Its just something to consider as most people I see watch season 4 jump to Kuvira's actions being wholly bad or other similar opinions because they don't think about the wider context and just take the leader of this breakaway rebellious state's word as the truth. Despite him refusing to rejoin the Earth Kingdom in favour for independence despite the danger to his people and the reliance on begging for international aid to prevent starvation.

The earth kingdom needs Kuvira, chaos needs order. The series shows parallels between the Earth Kingdom and ancient China, when there was a war of the 7 kingdoms and peace came only when one kingdom "conquered" all the other kingdoms. The Avatar team and Republic City offer only the foolish prince as a solution for the Earth Kingdom. Kuvira's actions may seem too authoritarian from our current perspective, but it is the right measure for that time period.

Plus the rest of the world doesnt want the Earth Kingdom to change much either, bad for business if suddenly ore and imports of food suddenly dont get produced by impoverished peasants but by educated free people... uhm... so far Im 100% on the side of a Kuvira that wants her actual PEOPLE to flourish and not just the nobility. But then we gotta talk about ... the other stuff ... "Camp"ing is not always fun for everyone... And there we have the real villain: People who think they are right 100% of the time. Can we for once try this "raising a country from out of an archaic system" without being a giant douche towards others? A little bit of douchyness I get, its international politics and all that... but there is a healthy limit :D But dont misunderstand me, your point is solid nonetheless. Always account for the times etc.

Kuvira is a interesting Character and someone i have a Duality with since many people will argue that she is the villain of season four however when i contradict that in that she never did anything wrong and that the real villain's of the season is actually Team Avatar(minus Korra) and the everyone else who we had a journey with for 3 seasons are in fact the villains of the season since they want to reinstate a Monarchy that failed to help the people and a Prince who cares more about titles and a lavish life style like his aunt rather then Kuvira who wants to help the People of the Earth Kingdom.

yes that is very true and an important point. I just really wish the show would have had more time to actually go into that then ended up happening... I blame the modern 10-12 episode show format for this. I miss the 20-26 season lengths :( I really appreciate Kuviras INTENDED character... but the execution is a tad lack luster imo. Its not terrible by any means though, just to make that clear.

It wasn't just PTSD. Katara states that the poison damaged her internal organs, and she was indeed paralyzed for some time. The poison is most likely Mercury based on the fact that it's a liquid metal and its silvery look. Mercury poisoning can cause depression, paralysis, hallucinations, kidney/brain/liver damage, and obviously death with a huge dose which is what the Red Lotus was going for. I also want to touch on the fact that ATLA was aimed at a much younger audience where LOK tries to make you uncomfortable sometimes with a slightly more serious approach. ATLA was great at incorporating serious themes and life lessons; but because the main character was 12, I think it would have been extra intense/bordering inappropriate to show him paralyzed or battling depression for an extended period. I'm not saying 12 year olds can't struggle with those things, but in terms of a TV show aimed at kids, I think they took the opportunity with Korra (age appropriate) to relate to their audience that might be going through similar issues and show someone struggle and then get better
