In this reaction video, I will be reacting to Legend of Korra season 4 episode 1: After All These Years
The Legend of Korra Season 4 begins three years after the events of Korra season 3. A lot has changed: Mako has a new position protecting the Earth Prince, Bolin now works for the powerful and ambitions Kuvira on her journey to unite the Earth Kingdom and marry Opal's brother (surprise!), and everyone has exciting new haircuts. Also, flying air suits!
Zaheer is gone but not forgotten. His actions to bring chaos to the world have caused a pendulum swing back towards order.

This season is why I relate to Korra so much more than Aang. I love Aang, but watching Korea go through it they way I did myself, makes hee my number 1.

Yeah, its more realistic in a way. I mean, you can't just recover from something in a matter of a week or so, it's mercury after all. Not to mention, ptsd is something that is really hard to deal with.

One of the character developments on a visual note that I really enjoy, is that Korra is noticeably less swole than she was 3 years ago. She looks small, almost frail now.

@@Moakmeister Look at all of the characters, they are softer and less defined, that's just a fact of the lack of financial support. The tight flying suits, the less crazy hair of everybody, sacrifices were made. I am not saying that it doesn't make sense story wise, but it's a factor to take into account

The hair changes are actually a really great way of showing the passage of time. Mako and Bolin's new hair styles reflect their new roles in the world as a bodyguard and a peacekeeping soldier, respectively, and Asami's ponytail reflects how she's been taking on a more hands-on approach with Future Industries.

Awesome. I like Korra and Asami's hair the most, but I like that Bolin's hair speaks to the fact that he's trying to be "mature."

I like they've kept that consistent through both series. Zuko cutting his hair and shedding his burdens. Azula having a hair out of place while bending, representing imperfection. Azula cutting her hair poorly to show her mental state deteriorating.

Fun facts about next episode (without spoilers): 1. It's Korra's voice actress's favorite episode 2. It won the "Best Television Episode" in IGN Best of 2014 for television 3. It was one of Dimartino's favorite episodes to write. And 4: IT IS A MASTERPIECE AND MY FAVORITE AVATAR SERIES EPISODE!

This seasons i think does an interesting job depicting Post Traumatic Stress. Through the season i couldn't help but think about the trauma and recovery process of soldiers and stuff. Its a tough process and its even tougher to do alone.

The bandit who steals supplies from Kai and Opal is one of the bandits Kuvira captured on the rail track earlier. He's most likely ordered by Kuvira to steal the supplies. That's also how he got a plane.

Actually a lot of what Kuvira does offscreen is left for the audience to puzzle out. There probably would've been a lot less of that if the Kuvira-centric/backstory episode hadn't been lost to Nickelodeon's mid-production Book 4 budget slash.

One thing I find really interesting that S1E1 last person on the screen was Amon. S2E1 last person seen was Unalaq. S3E1 it was Zaheer. And now last person seen on this episode (S4E1) is Korra, not Kuvira but there is actually consistency there. Kuvira is the main antagonist and Korra the main protagonist...or is that so? For me this is the greatest season for various unmentioned reasons. Okay, one is the focus on characters' hair of course :)

One of the best openers to one of my favorite seasons. I think Book 4 is the one that truly defines The Legend of Korra as a whole. Book 3 is the most popular season, but some of the most significant events for the show happen in this one. The next episode in particular one of the best episodes in the franchise.

an interesting thing to note about kuvira: when she earthbends, she never touches the earth. she also wears gloves. it's a sharp contrast from the rough-and-tough earthbenders we normally see.

Season 4 is my favorite season because how much Korra has grown, both as a character and the show itself. Kuvira is a well written villain with a lot of depth about her that reminds me of Korra in season 1. I like how Korra's inner struggle really reflects her fight with Kuvira. It's the most well written season, in my opinion

Korra's arc during this season is a prety much a masterpiece. The writers did an incredible job with everything that was going on behind the scenes. Nickoloden were real dicks to them towards the end.

I'm a big fan of time jumps when used effectively as I believe they were used here. They really allow the events of the previous season to marinate and for us to see the very real consequences of actions taken previously on the world and the characters. I don't believe this is fully fleshed out until the next episode, but it is one of the best examples of how to move the story forward offscreen and then catch the audience back up quickly that I can remember.

It is theorised (and I think I agree) that the bandits who stole the food the Airbenders were bringing to Yai were working for Kuvira. It makes sense not only because they had a plane, but it also seems exactly the kind of indirect ultimatum that Kuvira would set. She created the perfect conditions so that the mayor did not have a choice but to pledge his allegiance to her and her cause.

As an actual anarchist Zaheer just destroying structures, killing the queen, and idealizing chaos is probably my only problem with his character and season 3. He built no dual power, no mutual aid networks, and didn't even bother to speak with and educate the people of Ba Sing Se. His love for chaos doesn't make much sense either since anarchist usually argue the opposite, that anarchy IS order which is why the main anarchist symbol is an "A" inside of an "O". They could have easily had things progress to this point without making the political ideology Zaheer represents be presented as illogical as it was. Maybe the writers didn't really understand anarchism or maybe they thought it would be more interesting to present it the way they did but when they first revealed Zaheer as an anarchist I was really hoping that there would finally be a good representation of the ideology in media.

So from what I know, Season 1 was green lit but no other seasons were at the time. Later on Season 2 got the same treatment. Season 3 and 4 however were green lit at the same time, allowing for the stories to click better.

Have you observed the PARALLELS between Air and Earth......Opal and Kai perfectly demonstrates Airbending philosphy of being free while Kuvira demonstrates Earth which is being grounded like what she was doing now in Earth kingdom. Air VS Earth more to come...

Imo, had Zaheer been successful; in terms of his freedom along with the deconstruction of the previous societal structure. He would have the countless other unknown Red Lotus members establish a semblance of guidelines. In a way that's freeing, with his moral compass deciding what's over the line. Side note: Kuvira methods are multifaceted(I'll expound upon that later), in showing her prowess. It's going to be interesting what you think.

I love so much that during season 3 I'm like whoo! Go Zaheer! Tear down the oppressive establishment! Distribute the Queen's wealth! And then during season 4 I'm like Kuvira is right! We need to stabilize the earth kingdom and bring order! Offering diplomacy at first and then force if necessary! Unite for the sake of the children and the vulnerable and the future! It just shows the nuance of this show and of human belief and thought. And how much context influences "right" and "wrong".

I don't know if it's healthy to separate your job from your relationship, especially in this instance. Opal's job is about helping people wherever they have to, and Bolin is working for someone she clearly has moral issues with.

Plus it's not like Kuvira doesn't rub it in any chance she gets, like how she ambushed Opal with the engagement announcement. It IS personal, there's no way they could separate that.

The governor was forced to make a decision to get guaranteed supplies and be under someone who you disagree with or have your people starve and try to get food like he said he really had no choice and at the end of the day he did the right thing for the sake of his people
