It’s always disappointing to me that Time Team digs were always so much under time pressure. The archeology is thousands of years old and yet they get a few days or even a few hours to find and investigate. Is this just to build the ‘tension and jeopardy’ in the filming or are the rules just so (too) strict?

That would have been one of the foundation production decisions. Not only for the fake "reality tv" drama (which it was), but just as much to control costs, I'd say.

It was Mick Aston’s decision. There was a discussion about whether or not you could decide / discover what a dig was about in three days. Mick said it could be done and it was!

The archaeologists all had full-time jobs and could only film on weekends. Also, these were never meant to be full-scale investigations. They were more evaluative, for future in-depth work by others.

Correct on the full time jobs, and if it was a good dig,other groups came in after and continued working on the sites
