I recently purchased a 3rd gen Escort as a daily driver/winter beater car. Since it is my disposable project vehicle, it will be the first DIY timing belt attempt for me and your video is a very welcome aid. Thanks for putting in the effort to make this video; I feel much more confident I can tackle this task in one day.

nice job!! Well done tutorial calling out bolt and nut size was unexpected surprise. I was viewing this video for timing mark conformation. Thank you again. Chilton or Hayes wasn't exactly clear. The way you presented this change out! I bet my Teenage Daughter could watch this. Then change my timing belt. Thank you again!!

tod my mom just had a timing belt kit put in the same car 1997 ford escort 2.0 this was because her wp started to leak. the belt was not done at 60k so we did that as well. my question is after she picked up the car and brought it home I wanted to listen to it to see how it sounded I hear a rubbing sound coming from the tb cover area that was not being heard before the job was started. is this normal being that it is a new belt is there a brake in period or something ? joe

Thank God that lower stud on that pump didn't have to come out. I've done this job on 2 focuses and a 95 escort. I think the 98 2.0 honestly is taking the cake for tightness and most definitely acquired patience. Sitting on the lap top in the Garage right now like... WTF

Can you get the crank pulley off with just a breaker bar and how would you keep the pulley in place while you loosen it. Only time I did this was on a RWD car with the rear wheels on the ground and just put it into 4th gear.

What’s tightening spec on tensioner ,crank and camshaft? Thank you for replying!

Hopefully you put the front seal in because in the video the old seal had been removed but it didn’t have the new seal in it yet.

I had my timming belt changed the car runs ok but I don't think the reason it jumped a tooth or two was resolved it sometimes jolts I think something gets stuck I suspect something isn't rotating freely around that timing belt.

Nice video. I have a 97 escort just like that one with a obd code p0340, I already replaced cam and crank sensor, wiring checked ok, replaced ecm, timing belt and tensioner. Timing marks aligned. Cleared the code with scanner, but still comes back after starting the engine. Any ideas? Thanks.

unfortunately this can be a tricky one. "electrical" noise can set the code. bad or wrong plugs, plug wires, EGR feedback sensor (DPFE), alternator (too much A/C bleeding out....

Hi. Nice video. Clear explanation. I let my belt go too long on my 99 escort and it broke yesterday (as least I think so). I've heard that the car engine would be trashed if that happens. Do you think that is the case?
@cobradwight15 жыл бұрын
Mark Gatz the sohc escort is a non interference engine. If the belt breaks it will do no damage. You can replace the belt and be back on the road.

Where is the camshaft position sensor located on this car
@cobradwight15 жыл бұрын
big kev it’s in the cylinder head on top near the fuel rail.

video is very useful. but what is the estimated time it would take someone that has a mechanical back ground just never worked on a Ford escort.
@fixingcarsandstuff9 жыл бұрын
Andrea Calton 4-6 hours is a guess.

7 minutes if the engine is out on a table :)

ordinary screw type clamps can loosen over time, might want to source out some better ones, If you have time get some scandvik ABA rolled edge clamps from a marine parts supplier, or find some original ones, had it happen where they worked loose , not my repair but my car and had to fix , a pain, if you are a pro might want to stock up on some. also the rolled edge will not cut into hose .

Happy holidays, so you lined up the camshaft, removed the belt and just turned the crankshaft to line it up TDC after you put the water pump back on?
@fixingcarsandstuff10 жыл бұрын
Well, try to line up both marks before taking off the timing belt. Maybe something moved or got bumped. After putting on the water pump and getting ready to put on the timing belt make sure the marks are still lined up

Fixing cars and stuff hi im fixing my and 2000 escort 2.0 sohc i dont know what happened but she ask could i do the water pump and timing belt i did over 30 times and it wont crank can u help me out it has no fire
@fixingcarsandstuff9 жыл бұрын
Wont crank - to me that means the engine is not rotating like a dead battery. I believe you mean it cranks over but will not start. make sure crank or cam sensors are not dis-connected. Maybe you can post pics of your timing marks, so we all can see how they are lined up. Need to find out if you have spark to the spark plugs, proper fuel pressure and/or injector pulse at injectors.

I'm old school but I made a rookie mistake. On the crankshaft pulley is got the air gaps for the CPS. I tried to start it without the harmonic balancer. LOL no signal to the CPS
