The only thing I need to know about cars with wet belt engines 🙄 is to never own one! 🙂

Built in obsolescence, making the electric option more attractive. It’s all designed on purpose to suit the current narrative
@233kosta2 ай бұрын
Which is dumb af. Two things are needed for mass adoption of electric cars: 1. Actually good electric cars (think mid-'90s Toyota Corolla, but electric. Not the rolling surveillance equipment sold today.). 2. The infrastructure to support them. With both in place, mass adoption happens on its own. It's a simple enough decision for most people. Without *both* in place, any effort to "make" it happen is destined for utter failure. The only question is how much collateral damage will be done. At this rate, I'm thinking a LOT. Western politicians have lost all fear of the electorate, and as a result have forgitten that you simply cannot legislate human behaviour. All you can do is set up the right incentives (and NOT in a punitive charge + tax incentive way!).

Having served an engineering apprenticeship back in the 70s and worked In both engine manufacturing and aerospace, I find the idea of running a rubber belt in oil absolutely absurd. Many designers have ideas that are impractical and never come to fruition but this should of been scraped at the drawing board stage. I have seen belts fail on all types of machinery due to oil ingress! This smacks of money saving as a timing chains and sprockets cost more with the added cost of chain guides and tensioners.

I still have and drive a 19 year old Mk6 Transit with a bullet proof 2.0 Di engine , I’ve looked after her over the years and she’s still going strong… Don’t think the modern stuff is built to last…. 👍

A really stupid idea, rubber belt in oil. Like one Ford engine with a belt driving the oil pump !

Wet belts are a good attempt at combining the worst aspects of regular chains and belts. Unfortunately the idea seems to have succeeded,
@tonyshaw45702 ай бұрын
rubber belt and hot oil never mix .crap engine design which will fail never mind what oil you use .just crap
@m_lockwood-tj9kv2 ай бұрын
Disagree that it is wrong type of oil,worked in a pas workshop & most belts cracked up due to bad belts ,not up to the job ,most cars effected had the right oil in.
@Benzknees2 ай бұрын
Why would any engineer design a rubber belt to run in oil? It's almost as though they're deliberately creating an expensive problem for car owners.

Motor manufacturers use so much "State of the Art Technology" today, that they remain devoid of any basic common sense! The "wet belt" syndrome is a case in point. The manufacturers should be enforced to have motorists reimbursed over any repairs in relation to these issues. A well explained video of what is in reality a simple, unprofessional, mechanical cock-up!!

@@stanthesteelguitarman8228 My sister had a BMW diesel whit plastic inlet manifold, when that broke it cost here 1600€. Three monts later the engine died compleetly, sold for export to Africa for 1000€. Ok she did 230.000km whit it but always maintained at BMW, which is not cheap. Normally with an engine like that she had a least another 100.000km too go, the rest of the car was good.

Question if I may? I hear that the new VW T7 will share the same chassis as the Ford Transit. Will it share the Ford engine too?

My lad eyed up a 308 gt line really nice spec good condition and the car went to Citroen for recall work sump off inspect clean oil pick up came back with a clean bill of health. When we went to pick it up I finally got a chance to view service records etc and I could see the shortening of the cam belt change to 62k was required checked the docs no change apparent. Spoke to the used car dealers rep and he said we could not go through with it if we wished but was not prepared to move on the price which was good or pay for the work. I had an inspect of the belt, and it was wider than tolerance( there's a cheap tool) but my boy was a bit stuck as he needed car for new job so he took it. Upshot as soon as practicable we got the belt changed but it's a £500 job nice car otherwise but why didn't Citroen inform dealer belt was cracked out of spec it's a 2 minute job literally. Personally no wet belts in my world and Stellantis should pick up the tab for all belt changes up to the original 112k interval. What a poor piece of design don't touch as its hard to know where the debris might migrate even if the sumps been off.

My father bought me a 2016 1.5 petrol focus in December, it had only done 15k miles and had full dealership service history due to it being an ex mobility vehicle. It replaced a 2002 2.0 petrol Grand Vitara. I did a full service in febuary myself at the cost of £230 which included oil and filter, engine and cabin filters, serpentine belt, coolant and spark plugs. Bit confused as to why i only get 27 miles to the gallon though.
@Single6982 ай бұрын
Just had my wetbelt done and it cost me £1500 60,000 and i serviced it myself properly with recomended oil and filters. Best to get it done before it starts to go this price included new water and oil pump, pick up pipes and filters didnt need the extra bits but had them changed, standar belt change would be £1000 he said. I had it checked before i had the work done by fords and they said the belt was on its way out they quoted for standard job£1500 van is fine now but i will just change it every 60,000 miles £1000 part of ownership cost but i would never buy another too much anxiety, ticking time bomb and if it goes transit engine £4500 recon fitted and once belt gone engine has gone along with it dont risk it get a check by dealer.
@lesley11742 ай бұрын
Why would you do that? Just put a good strong chain or even a gear train if the drive is internal and running in oil.

Wet belts along with DPF's are the biggest con in modern engines. Designed to fail at the customer's expense.😒
@233kosta2 ай бұрын
Eh, DPFs serve an actual purpose. All those need is an hour or two on the motorway every other week and they'll outlast the body. If you don't drive long-ish distance, don't buy a diesel. They're only ever going to be more efficient doing between 50 and 85 mph for extended periods of time. Outside of that envelope, a petrol engine will be better.
@Elvo76842 ай бұрын
I own a Transit Van, they don't do a petrol version. All larger commercial vehicles are diesels. Besides, when the DPF does work, the regen process only burns off the stored particles back into the atmosphere, a complete waste of time. But the point is, from Wet Belts to DPF's the technology is flawed, and the consumer has to pay to get it fixed.

And the side effect is that people are too afraid to keep cars long so it generates 'turnover' in the motor trade.

Last piece of advice is really good. Just get it serviced as soon as you buy it. You need to factor in 500 pounds, though but I guess it will be worth it and peace of mind is important. One less thing to worry about in this crazy mad world.

Good wise advice👏 wet belts are a rubbish idea without a shadow of doubt! In saying that I’ve had 3 wet belt engined vehicles (2 ford focus and currently ford puma although that is chain driven but the oil pump is still belt🤷♂️) and my 14 plate focus I bought with 20k on it and sold it with 188k and it didn’t miss a beat simply because I serviced it with the exact specification oil and parts and at the correct times on that same original belt!, I’m not saying that is the cure because a percentage of all types of engines will let go it’s the law of averages they are after all mechanical and that just happens😧

Stay away from them at all cost, no way would I ever buy anything with a wet belt on, we had 6 focus estates at my old company with the dreaded 1.0 litre ecoboom engine in them, mine blew up at 87,000 miles, and two of our other managers blew up at 79,000 & 91000 all lease hire with regular servicing schedules adhered to.
