I give Dave Murray of Maiden credit too, a theres a surprising amount of prog elements to some of their songs. david gilmore in a sense too although he used a lot less sounds and techniques that would end up in metal compared with lifeson. But a lot of elements of lifesons style ultimately became cornerstones of metal.

I’ve said for years that Alex would be spoken of in the same breath as Gilmour, Hendrix, and Satriani if he’d been in a different band. But he just had to go and team up with Neil and Geddy 😂
@Temlock
@Temlock 4 жыл бұрын
Couldn't possibly agree more Clay. Well said. But it is Alex that lays the fabric of the songs that allow Neil and Geddy to be as great as they are. There have been some really great 3 piece bands (Triumph comes to mind, as do the Police). But you invariably hear people say that they sound like way more than 3 guys. Alex's chord configurations and style of play creates such an amazingly deep, rich and "thick" fabric for that massive sound that let Geddy and Neil run wild without the bottom falling out. He's just awesome. If you're interested, Alex played a 53 second guitar solo on Porcupine Tree's song "Anesthetize" that is full of his awesome, mood-setting guitar feel (starts at 4:04 and goes to 4:57 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4Sogo1up8p9d5Y). Alex is equally a demigod as are Neil and Geddy in my book.

Re: Alex. I really feel that people generally recognize Neil & Geddy for being at or near the top of the class in their instruments. It's almost as if critics or the general public think, "we can't recognize Alex as being there as well, or we'd have to recognize Rush as being one of the best bands of all time". So, because of that, he tends to get relegated to lower status, which is a shame. I know nothing about playing the guitar, but Alex can bring me to tears with his playing, which I can't say is true of Hendrix, Page or really, anyone else.

Alex has been overshadowed by Geddy & Neil by people who are not die hard fans. The fan base however knows better. He is definitely underrated by the general public and people who may not be musicians. The thing about his playing that gets overlooked is his versatility. Because of the length of their career and the different eras you can find a little bit of everything. He can shred a solo, create beautiful background landscapes, give you nasty riffs, just everything. I found it interesting when Far Cry was released that there was no traditional solo, instead he did a feedback solo. When he was asked about it he said he felt like it was what the song needed and he wanted to serve the song. That is what I think makes him so special and the somewhat "secret weapon" of RUSH, he always serves the song! Malignant narcissism is another great example!

In my opinion the second solo really showcases Alex's speed and precision, one of his best. He makes it seem so effortless - no hint at all that he is forcing the speed. There are few out there that pull off pinched harmonics like Alex. Guitarists that play as part of a group (as opposed to being the lead attraction) tend to get overlooked as being as great as they are - Terry Kath from Chicago comes to mind. These guys are phenomenal, innovative and constantly evolving their sound. To me Alex's best three emotive solos are La Villa Strangiato, Limelight, and The Garden.

Alex Lifeson's solo in the middle section of ''La Villa Strangiato'' (Studio or exit stage left) has to be one of the best solos ever right up there with Comfortably numb and others. One heavy riff you might enjoy is Jacob's ladder. Had that song been recorded later on it might have been one of their heavier peaces of music. Check them out. Stick it out and One little victory have a mean, mean guitar riff you may also enjoy.... But feel free to try everything!!!!!!

Alex is the master of harmonics, both natural and pinch (you’ll love the intro to Red Barchetta). He used such lovely chords, often with complex voicing. He had a rich stereo effects chain, and used the electric 12-string a bunch - don’t see those around much anymore. I think he is the guitarist version of Roger Wright (Pink Floyd keyboardist) - they’re able to paint soundscapes with their instruments. His solos are always so well connected to what the bass and drums are doing. Listen to the solo in Limelight. It’s like the bass and guitar are doing a duet (no rhythm guitar part needed!), and then the bass and drums bring the tempo back from half-time as Alex takes them back into the chorus. It shows such a maturity in composition when all of their songs have the right balance of instrumentation. I love Metallica, but often a song will feel like “Ok, insert Hammett solo here”. I don’t get that impression with Rush. Looking forward to more. Cheers!

About Alex. The guy has a chord named after him! F#7sus4 (I think) -- the "Alex Lifeson Cord". He's famous for letting those B's & E's just ring. His use of "non-standard" open chords and arpeggios is what helps provide that sound that makes them seem bigger than a trio. I won't debate skill, but compositionally (like the rest of them), he's a master.

My 1st Rush concert in Little Rock AR 10/77. I was 15 y/o and went with 4 friends 1 of which was old enough to drive (16). We met in a patch of woods near our HS 2 hours before the show to get stoned. I had made this homemade doorknob pipe that could hold like 1/4 oz of weed and had purchased an OZ of Colombian Gold killer pot earlier that day. So we got real stoned and went to the show which was in a smaller arena called Robinson Auditorium (3k-5k ppl) and it was the most awesome Rush concert I've ever been to and I've been to many over the years. My last Rush concert in Irvine CA in 2015 was my 2nd fav Rush show ever and my daughter was there with me. GREAT MEMORIES.

I love watching young people discovering Rush.. I graduated in 83' and at the start of that year I saw them at Radio City Music Hall.. Being young and already seeing them several other times at venues like The Garden or Brenden Byrne Arena (Meadowlands), I wasn't sure what to expect.. It turned out to be one of the best places to see them.. My seat was 15th row center and I was right on top of them.. Anyway, the entire band was pretty much under appreciated at that time even though they packed arenas.. There are so many songs you have to check out.. The Camera Eye (Moving Pictures} comes to mind as does Circumstances (Hemispheres Side B) as well as Cygnus x1 book 1 (A Farewell To Kings) Cygnus x1 book 2 (the entire first side of Hemispheres).. By-Tor and the Snow Dog (Fly By Night).. Witch Hunt (Moving Pictures).. There are Just so many.. Anyway good work..

Subscribed to share your journey. Not into new metal as you are, but any classic rock "produced" as they just don't do enough of nowadays I will really enjoy watching you experience. Imagine being a 15 year old kid who's never been to a concert before and you're older neighbor at about 5 in the evening asks if you'd like to go with a bunch of other guys to a general admission concert to see a band called Rush and you've never heard of them before. Of course I begged my mother to go, I was allowed to go and the rest is history they became my favorite band instantly. It was the Permanent Waves tour with Spirit of Radio just blowing me away. How could three people put out that much quality sound it was just amazing to me. Stage presence for each was amazing.

Grace Under Pressure is such an amazing album. Red Sector A is the stand-out track for me on this one. It just exemplifies how good these 3 musicians really are. Neil Peart wrote lyrics that resonated with his friend, and bandmate Geddy, and Lee and Lifeson created a musical piece that has no bass guitar and still flows seamlessly. These 3 men were the culmination of musical perfection. RIP Neil.

In 1992, myself and two roommates moved into our ‘triple’ corner dorm room on the 7th floor... to start our sophomore year of college. Set up my crappy and very loud RCA stereo 100 watts per channel...speakers on top of these tall cabinets facing the room...and the opened window facing campus. I pressed play on my super cool JVC CD player... The three of us sat in chairs facing the window ...huge smiles as the intro to Natural Science starts.... then the song kicks into gear then another gear... then another.... an absolutely epic song to start the epic journey which would be our next year of school... we jammed out to that song... soooo loud... could not hear each other.. just digging the grooves... every Rush song has a story for every listener and fan Thanks and love your KZbin channel

Tim, great insights as usual. You hit on a couple of things that I totally agree with you, one being their ability to maneuver between time signatures so smoothly. The other how Alex has such a unique playing style and isn’t always name checked as an influence. Rush’s rhythm section is so busy and dominate in their music that you aren’t always hearing what he’ playing until his solos. His use of open chords and arpeggios are his strong points to me. Thankfully someone like yourself can explain it to the non initiated. I would highly recommend you check out Jacob’s Ladder next.

I'm a guitarist. Once you learn to play his stuff you realize how brilliant he is. He's really an acoustic guitarist. Look at his chord construction. Inversions, intervals, dropped 5ths, harmonics, implied harmonics, use of suspended chords. It's all there. Most electric guitarists don't think like he does. He has a really strong left hand. As he got older he got a bit of arthritis- so he uses a whammy now instead for using hand for various stretches while playing chords. But when he was younger it was all in the hand. Amazing guitarist. Not many can play like him because not many people spend a long time on acoustic guitar before going electric.

Other people have said it (probably even here in these comments) but Rush is a musician's band; not just that the three of them are each outstanding musicians. But they are a band that appeal to - and are most appreciated by - other musicians; due to - like you said - their ability to make the complex seem effortless, how they move through time signatures and rhythms with ease and make the transitions seamless within their songs. That's why I'm glad to see your reactions, because, as a guitarist, you get it. The other HUGE part of their genius is Neil's writing. I mean, he's a professional writer and poet if there ever was one. All the stuff we heard in English class about metaphors, similes, homophones, alliteration, personification, iambic pentameter, all of those writing techniques, devices, and tools in the toolbox of a poet, Neil uses those tools like a master craftsman, not to mention his incredible passion for history and the human condition. I was actually saying this to a friend of mine earlier today, regarding 2112, if you pulled back the guitar, bass, keys, and vocals, it would basically be an epic drum solo. The same is true for Natural Science. No two fills are the same, practically no two measures are the same. He had a massive kit and he used every last piece of it. Nothing was there for show. It was all very utilitarian, but his version of utilitarian would be viewed as ostentatious for most drummers. Thanks for your RUSH reactions. Glad to hear you're enjoying the journey. I look forward to the next one.

Agree, Lifeson playing is unique in sound and style. He just might be one of the most creative guitar player I've heard. When he writes a solo he's not concerned with being pretty to the ears, like a David Gilmour. His solos have a unique quality and are very fresh, never the same old. It's like there's only one path to find your way out of a maze for most players, but not with AL, he'll show you 10 different ways to do it. He's just not predictable. A great example is his creative soloing is from ''La Villa Strangiato''. In the Monster section of the song his solo sounds like a horn section of an orchestra. Which was the desired effect he was going for because Peart wanted that section of the song to sound like a big band orchestra. The other thing we should also point out is AL chording. Since there's only 3 players, his task is to fill the empty musical space with melodies and big sustained chords. I was watching a youtube clip with John Petrucci from DT and he references AL for this reason.

I don’t know if anyone has suggested these two songs yet, but I would personally love to get your take on Cygnus X1 Book I & II. These songs are on back to back albums. Book I is on A Farewell to Kings, and Book II is the entire side of Hemispheres (my favorite album of theirs). It’s the story of someone who flies his spacecraft (Rocinante) into the heart of the black hole Cygnus X1 (this is Book I), and then it’s the story of what he finds on the other side (Book II). I would recommend the studio versions on a first listen. I’m really enjoying your channel.

More highlights from their early career, which will probably be your favorite part: Cygnus X-1 - Books I and II (part II is "Hemispheres"), 2112 of course, The Necromancer, The Camera Eye. I'm partial to the longer songs it seems. The middle "synth" era of their career is very underrated IMO, it grew on me over time. From the mid-90's on they got the heavy back, heavier than they ever were, but less prog.

I'm generally not a fan of song reaction videos but you go at everything you listen to with an open mind which makes for some great content. I know a lot of people who would hear the ambient noises at the beginning of this track and not even give it a chance. I can't wait to see what other songs/bands you react to in the future.

Please start going through the lyrics in these part 2 videos. Yes, they make the greatest music known to man, I agree. But, you're missing out on pure, poetic, Peart pontification!! Talk about "getting to know the band."!! Great channel! Great reactions! Keep up the great work, man!!

Lifeson was a huge influence on guitarists during the seventies and eighties. Just ask Kirk Hammet.

@Out Loud Studios You can literally put on any album from their "RUSH" debut through "Signals" and not touch it until it is done. Seriously, not even kidding. I've said before but I'll say it again .... "The Camera Eye" .... another 10 minute chunk of total dedication to being great.

About Lerxst. He's not underrated at all. If you listen to celebrated guitarists like John Petrucci (who's a total fangirl, btw) or Kirk Hammett, they say exactly why he's their hero. Dynamics, chord construction, picking, everything. Guitarists who know their craft know and celebrate this guy. What he isn't is showy. A lot of what he does in understated and subtle, which is only appreciated by people who know how to play. And he's not an egomaniac in need of recognition, which helps. You play, you get it.

Rush being experimental, was able to let every instrument shine, not just the guitar. As keyboards became more prevalent, the guitar sometimes took on a more supportive role. As a musician myself, I appreciate the fact that Lifeson was mature and creative enough to lead when he needed, and to follow when needed. Rock and roll doesn't typically follow this formula.....it's mostly guitar driven.

One aspect of Rush gets overlooked is Neil's writing. Check out Red Barchetta. You won't find a better song that meshes lyrics and music so perfectly. For that reason it's one of the best rock songs ever written

Who are these guys you ask? They left our planet long ago the elder race to learn and grow. Rush came back to have us listen to their music. I always see a little meek Geddy Lee singing to the priests, Listen to my music and hear what it can do, Theres something here thats as strong as life, I know that it will reach you.

The cool fast part after the beginning section is called 'hypersoace' and the second part of hyperspace Neil goes into the ride symbol and hi hat like in subdivisions but faster. It's a drum technique you dont hear too much but sounds bitchen and it's difficult to do

May I suggest that you give “Subdivisions” a go? If you do, watch the official video because it really does inform the song. Also, in my opinion, that song is SO full of hooks that a lesser band could have used them to write the better part of an entire album.

Alex was perfect for Rush. His guitar playing is so melodic and good I’ve always seen him as very underrated. He’s up there in my bests list. Rick Emmett from Triumph, another Canuck trio, is so good if you haven’t heard triumph I suggest you go listen to them. They rock hard but got eclipsed by Rush.

I must admit that what I think are the Rush “must listen to” songs are not necessarily the most popular or requested ones. I would really like to see your reaction to a favourite “deep track” of mine, namely “Nobody’s Hero,” off of Rush’s “Counterparts” album. A great version of it is actually the song’s official video. I have no idea why but, for some peculiar reason, “Counterparts” is not often mentioned and the fact that it’s one of my favourite Rush albums doesn’t seem to affect the world at large at all. Now, I wonder why that should be?

You're wondering what folks ecommend to listen to more RUSH? Don't forget live versions compared to studio cuts. I prefer La Villa Strangiato original studio version better .And By-tor and the Snow dog is ok studio-wise, but listen to the "All the World's a Stage" live version of By-tor. Alex's synth guitar is the best! I saw it in concert and the light show was excellent. Trippy lights andVolume swells and pick slides.He had said once in interviews that he got tired of dancing between pedals all the time (things got better after the advent of digital pedals. Alex will sit and start playing a guitar solo, and he never stops! He just changes mood and tempo to keep it fresh. I'm a diehard RUSH fan from the first time I saw them in the All the World's tour in '75! When I first heard 2112, I decided to become a drummer and am now 59 and still rockin even after a stroke last year. Keep rocking the RUSH, brother!

Just wondering if you have heard the albums 2112 and Caress of Steel. I find that most critics of Geddy Lee's voice or his singing, ( not sure which is bothering people) are not familiar with the singer he once was. Anyone who listens to the studio version of 2112 all the way through, or No-one At the Bridge, or The Necromancer, is stunned by the sheer power, soulfulness and versatility of the mid-seventies Geddy. There is no question that a decade of relentless touring ruined his voice by the time the eighties came around. He, like many veteran hard rock singers developed nodes, and since Hemispheres, his voice was never the same.

I think the reason Alex doesn't get brought up for greatest guitarist is because his fantastic riffs were mostly part of the song, not stand alone riffs like most others. The whole song Was his riff!
