People who hyped that card don't understand why Cabal Therapy is good. It's like every time there's a black creature that puts a card from your library into your hand and you lose life gets compared to Bob. You have 2/2 bears and people are like: "Is this a Tarmogoyf?" About the only thing I can think of that's ever worth the hype are moxen. Zero-mana artifacts that tap for mana each turn, even with restrictions, are never bad. Most of the Swords (...of Fire and Ice/Feast and Famine/etc.) are also pretty good. I think this has more to do with cards that are part of a cycle that's been proven.

When I was running a LGS and game day for born of the gods was comming up people were presellng the Pain seer promo for $50 each and I was like if I could get away with it sell them off and add 4 boxes of packs to top 8 as prizes on top of regular prize support because I know my players lol . The anti-capitalist, anti-LGS sentiment comes from Wizards intentionally under printing cards that are staples in modern, EDH, and other non-rotating formats. People are rightfully mad at the secret lair pricing and sales model, and that gets taken out at the LGS because there is no way to deal with Wizards on the same level as an LGS

TCC had a good comparison to secret lair being akin to buying an Animal Crossing skin for your Nintendo Switch. Pepperidge farm remembers 20 years ago I thought using alpha lands were the best "skin" I could use instead of Ice Age lands. Now it's all about full picture beauties.

@@technole that is definitely true for secret lairs that are unique arts, but I don't think it is a good comparison for the fetchland secret lair. The fetchlands are the most extreme example, but wizards not printing the cards that people want to play with is ultimately what drives anger in the community. Its an absolute shame that people blame the LGS for rising prices, lack of supply, etc. Those things are a result of wizards not keeping up printing for a playerbase that has grown a massive amount recently.

I have to disagree with this. This mentality comes from people wanting to just jump into a “collectible hobby” and have everything that people who have been collecting, trading, saving, and buying for 10-20 years have. Maybe it’s people being able to pay-to-win video games with a few hundred bucks and then they think they should be able to do the same with magic. Magic is a hobby. It’s about collecting. Yes it’s expensive but at this point the people who have put in the time kind of want it to stay that way and for good reason. Yes, they could reprint cheap versions of a lot of cards and people who just want to play would be satisfied but that isn’t the majority of people who complain like this. You can just play with proxies if you really “just want to play” but most people in actuality want to own all the fancy, rare, collectibles that other people own.

Very first card my kid pulled from our regular booster box was the Death Corona Foil in the box topper. She was geeked. Opened up 3 more in 2 collector boxes. Sold the 3 extra and are keeping the first one opened as a good memory. It's more valuable to me as a collector item.

In Yu-Gi-Oh last year everyone thought a card called "dingirsu" was gonna be super expensive because it was a meta defining card, but Konami overprinted it a bit, and the price tanked pretty hard. It went from $70 or more in the first week or two down to $30 for a long while, and then slowly kept going down from there. Just proves that if you don't know the pull ratios then you really shouldn't be buying it.

I was so hyped for the Godzilla cards in this set, but anytime I talked to my friends about the upcoming cards, I told them to stay away from pre-ordering anything, or buying day 1. People are gonna go crazy for these cards, especially after that News update about SpaceGodzilla, but 1 week after release those prices are gonna go down, down, down. Hell, you can still go out today and find collector's boxes of Theros and Eldraine, Why would Ikoria somehow NOT have a huge supply of these cards the moment people start opening these boxes? And when I got a Collector's box, in the first pack I opened I got a Foil SpaceGodzilla.

You were right about the distributors not getting their allotment. I bought a pre-order set of C20 from Dave and Adam's on 4/15 . Yesterday, 5/17, they sent me an email saying that they won't be sending them until 6/15. I knew it was coming because I started calling them on 5/14 about the order and was able to speak to them on 5/15. They said they received half of what they ordered and I wouldn't be getting my set until June 15. So I did what anyone would do: I went to Walmart and picked up 2 of the decks and a fat pack.

This similar to the Howl (CSGO SKIN) artist trouble led to skin being vaulted price sky rocketing. Then same sort of problem happened with M4A4 griffin but instead of vaulting they changed the art. Bubble happened over hype for new vaulted skin... popped when original art removed and skin changed entirely.

I seriously wonder why a card whose vanilla version is a forgettable uncommon would be super rare. To your point Rudy about where this villainizing small business owners for making a profit comes from. My theory is these are people who are awful negotiators. They think they can strong arm and shame the business to take a loss on sales as a negotiation tactic. Businesses of course sometimes do take an intentional losses as we know to generate good will to create a repeat customer base but thats a very strategic thing which the numbers have to support. Whiners dont get appeased by that strategy it just frustrates the retailer as much as the buyer and is just going to make the local retailer quit then you will have less sellers and those sellers left will have more price control due to less competition. The right strategy is support your local business if you like local business. If you don't need local business then hit the bricks Pal.

So I believe as I followed the initial listings that what happened was that for a couple days there was only 1 preorder Godzilla on TCGplayer. I don’t have evidence, but I remember it being by Good Games or something along that line, and for 400-500$. I thought it was insane and considered putting a listing for 200$, but didn’t realizing that it couldn’t possibly be worth that. I believe that the one listing turned into 3, which turned into 20, and simply because the first price was stupidly high, the rest of them were. If someone was stupid enough to buy it at that price, it was easy money for the seller. It was a situation I believe of mass-monopoly so to speak, where because every seller silently agreed that they would oversell it on the preorders, a few people believed that it was actually in that much demand.

I bought a collector box, and a booster box. Other than toppers, there are no Godzilla cards in the draft boxes. I got hosed on the collector box. Ended up with 2 of the Dorat, the Perfect Pet, and a foil of same. In one box. Bought a second box the next day and got one a Spacegodzilla non-foil.

My LGS indicated there was going to be some kind of correction provided to stores due to the collector’s boxes having no box topper. Spend $80 on a standard box? Box topper! Spend $200 on a collector’s box? Nothing extra! I think they will either provide retailers with something or do a second print of collector’s boxes run that does include the box toppers. With how many variants and showcase cards are in the standard box, you’re better off getting standard boxes for half the price of collectors boxes.

Really enjoy your content and always appreciate your detailed perspective. Its really turned my passion for magic into one for economics and finance. I've actually grown a lot in that regard as well. I don't feel like anyone is against paying for magic, but from the perspective of a person who buys magic products to play the game, it does get a bit annoying when we are not able to get the magic products we want because someone snatches all the retail product off the shelves and lists it for double the second it is in their hands or things like that. Its happening right now with commander 2020 decks. They are available at every retail location around me still, but if you check MTG facebook groups, any one of those decks can be found listed much higher. I have a basic understanding of the way markets work and I am not anti-capitalist, but I have a feeling you have no problem understanding why someone who is just interested in playing the game could easily be annoyed that at every step in this culture, there is a middle man between you and getting good, playable cards for a reasonable price.

You can buy a 2 cases like you said of Ikoria. Take what you need sell what you dont need and even have a chance at opening said card in a box. The numbers are lower then collectors but all them extra card you could make your money back and still have some Godzilla cards.

I got 3 collector boxes yesterday, I got 2 foil and 3 non foil of the death corona card. Its not gonna be super rare, but I didnt get a ton of them. I think it should stabilize around $15 or so. Still pretty good for an uncommon. The big ones are mothra and King ghidora though, I figured before I got the boxes, and I havent seen one yet.

It gets even better: Outside of Japan, Standard booster boxes will not feature Godzilla Cards outside of the box topper (like how the alt art Planeswalkers from War of the Spark were Japanese only,) so with Collector boosters not getting reprinted, the only version of the card will be this "rare misprint wotc doesn't want to acknowledge."

They arent in every box. I have opened a case of collector boxes and 2 of the boxes did not have a copy. A couple of the boxes had 2 copies one foil, one non foil, so it probably averages out.

i didn't buy into the immediate hype but i happened to get a foiled box topper. i do think the price will rise a good bit in the long term but at least for the run time of ikoria, it won't get that high.

7:00 - Culture about not making money. I'm glad you bring this up in MTG @Rudy. This exists in other industries as well and I think it's more of a general youth counter-culture than most people realize. It's frowned upon to 'make money' nowadays with buying something and then selling it for a higher price bc that's "not fair". I work(ed?) in the tourism/Hostel industry and the same was true with many of our customers.

I bought a foil coronagodzilla for 250. It also came with a lot of chaff, more specifically 11 collector boosters and 14 cards. Anyone thinking the card was gonna keep the 200 dollar price tag upon release was a timmylord, and i say this as a timmy myself.

I noticed something weird about the sealed products, did anyone else notice the same? I bought 4 prerelease kits and 1 regular booster box. I got more showcase cards (not the Godzilla junk, the awesome comic-book style cards) from my 24 prerelease packs than I did from the booster box, with 4x as many alternate foils. Anyone else seen similar discrepancies?

For those much more acclimated in purchasing MTG sealed product.. I haven't bought a box in over a year.. What would you purchase from these three? Ikoria Collectors, Iconic Masters, or something like Scars or Avycyn Restored? Other reccomendations appreciated

I bought my sealed boxes and that is it for me regarding Ikoria. Any manipulated/high priced new product is a risk; chances are you will lose $. Time will tell you if it is a potential buy for longterm.

I am an economist and magic collector, when I saw the prices pop up on eBay, I just laughed. I am by no means a "hardcore" collector. I buy a draft box for every expansions, bundles to collect dice and color booster just because I enjoy random luck. This card was my box topper and I was happy I didn't dropped crazy money on it, I'm building 3 decks out of the box. This video was great. If only people would use logic and reason more often rather that buy shit on impulse.

EAce I remember trading cards for cards without immediate recourse to an app with real time card values; ' this card is worth a pound / dollar more than yours so it's not a fair trade'. Used to be you added or removed / swapped out cards on both sides till you came with a trade you were both subjectively happy with. Sigh. Better times.

Mark Grantham We still had Beckett’s back then, they just weren’t the end all be all back then. The big difference was you didn’t have the same availability the Internet gives, so your local play group and community played more of role in stuff like card value and trading and Beckett was more of a suggestion. (Stores mostly used becket for pricing, but there might have been 1-2 in your area)
