With Core 21 and Jump start containing so many commander staples and going to be great for drafting, I wouldn't be surprised if we have another Dominaria situation where not too many people sit on large volumes of it and most of it just gets opened. Also Jumpstart is 500+ cards and mostly reprints so that is going to be help in solid regard for reprint demand, barring unforeseen issues. IF fetches are in either secretly then yeah it could be better than khans and go the way of OG Innristad. But only time will tell what with whatever they're releasing in 2021 (Another zendikar set, they seem to be prepping to go back to Phyrexia/Mirrodin, and if we're lucky Teferi will finally die ;) ) lol

I really appreciate the way that Rudy approached this conversation. It would have been easy to name-call and insult the subject of this story (and it probably wouldn't have hurt his viewership numbers either), but instead he made the focus the lack of sound advise from those with more experience in investments, and turned it into a learning experience. I would have really like to see his take on "how a similar investment could have been done more responsibly" or even some mention of diversification of assets. That would have been really valuable for those interested in the investment side of this story.

Love hearing the combination of Magic talk with finance. Keeps me coming back. Fundamental problem here is basic personal finance rules - don’t put all your eggs in one basket!!! Even if they sink half their life savings into reserve list cards, it’s still not enough variation in their investments. Half is too much in any one investment type. That they sunk it into one new card (the equivalent of investing in a new, untried business) versus reserve list (the equivalent of a solid, dividend bearing stock) is just further bad decisions. Trying too hard to get rich quick. Always, ALWAYS a bad idea. I do feel bad for the person, but honestly, you can’t say they didn’t have it coming...

I got back into magic around 3 1/2 years ago or so when Fate Reforged was the big thing and saw the colorless dragon planeswalker card and almost needed to change my underwear. I knew I had to have it. I told a few friends that if they pulled one I would trade them a fat 60$ sack of the sticky icky for it. Tried hard as Hell buying loose leaf packs 2 and 3 at a time to pull one to no avail. One of my buddies pulled it and it was totally the best trade I have ever made!!! My colorless eldrazi commander deck LOVES that card.

I learned 2 things from Rudy: They cant reprint sealed boxes and reserved list, those are only good MTG product to invest into. Everything else WILL get reprinted by cashgrabby watzie

This serves as a lesson to everyone that you need to diversify your assets. Also invest either in reserved list cards, or in new cards that you can grab for cheap. When you buy a popular new eternal format staple for 5-10 dollars (e.g. I have been buying a few Canopylands and Nybloom Ancients for that price, and I'm buying some triomes), not only is it less likely to be reprinted immediately after it's release, there's also much less room for the price to fall if you buy the card when supply is as high as it'll ever be. When you buy a 5 year old card like Ugin (or other currently high cards like Mana Confluence, Oracle of Mul Daya, etc.), the price has already been driven up by time so there's less room to grow and also much higher risk of a reprint. I wish the poor guy (or girl) that made this investment the best of luck, because as Rudy said, there's not much that can be done to salvage the situation right now. If you're not in a dire financial situation you may want to consider waiting it out, but I think you have to expect at least 4-5 years for it to break even again so I would only do that if I was completely sure that I wouldn't need the money in the foreseeable future.

Rofls in Mana Crypts double dunk reprints barely 6 months apart from each other. But yeah most of the time that is the correct thing to do. Never invest in cards that have already been creeping up for a few years because they're prime targets for a reprint, plus they're already high so less room to grow.

If I was to invest that sort of money in cards I would only invest in the reverse list as it’s the only sure cards that are safe from reprints thus market flooding in the long run, this seems so obvious but as a general you can never go wrong aside from some maybe some alt art promos

I did the same thing ... i bought quite a lot of cards for standard and expected to make money eventually. But my focus was on underrated cards. So i have goloses, fields of the dead, fires of invention, agent of treachery, niv-mizet reborn cards. Difference is that i bought them so cheap, that i can sell them for 5-20 times the price even after bans. My only problem was that i didnt go all the way like Timmy and doesnt spent much on that ... i treated it just like an experiment so i bought up only all copies from my LGS. In my opinion that is the only way to invest in singles. And cards that are not reserved listed. Every reprint makes it so you cant sell for many years and even then it can get another reprint. But ... if you spent few cents on them ... you can sell anytime and still have huge profit.

I just watch the price change videos on Monday. Get on Ebay and buy the cards mentioned at last weeks prices before they change to match the market and wait until everyone watches the same video and the price jumps again. Stick the cards on Ebay, undercut everyone by 15%, sell for a profit, rinse and repeat. I don't double my money each but it adds up pretty quickly over time if you stay on top of trends. It's not rocket surgery

I remember all of my old cards from years ago and think about it now like I did looking at ABU cards then thinking about those 50 dollar black lotus card. There is the possibility that Ugin will become a standard staple this season and cause the price to spike. Either way, if it were me I would wait it out if I could afford to. Ugin will always a be a powerhouse Planeswalker. It's played in modern Tron and fits in many commander decks. It's also a mythic rare. Not a worthless card by any means.
