Kevin Costner may not have been able to master an English accent, but he put his heart into the role of Robin Hood. The raw emotion that comes across his face in the aftermath of the sheriff's attack in Sherwood can only be done by a great actor. Alan Rickman is excellent as the slimeball Sheriff of Nottingham and shows that the sheriff is nothing more than a coward hiding behind his troops. Morgan Freeman was great as Azeem. The character offered an outsiders view of why they fight. His interaction with a curious little girl who had never seen a man with dark skin before will be one of the best softer moments in this movie. When it comes to the tale of Robin Hood being adapted to the screen, there are hits and misses. A lot of us grew up on the animated version before this movie, and there have been several adaptations. For the serious film fans, among the first adaptations come from the 1930s with Errol Flynn in the main role. The story of Robin Hood is one of the more difficult stories to adapt properly, along with King Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable.

There is a slightly tragic story few people noticed. At the same time this movie was made they made a Robin Hood TV movie in England. The cast was quite good, starring Patrick Bergin, Uma Thurman, Jürgen Prochnow, Edward Fox, Jeroen Krabbé. In the middle of the making they found out that Kevin Costner was making a big Hollywood Robin Hood. I've seen the movie and you can practically see the moment they found out. Everything just dropped, like the director, the actors and everyone just gave up. Up to that moment it was an entertaining watch. As for which Robin Hood movies to watch? The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), the one starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland and Basil Rathbone Robin Hood (1973), the animated one from Disney Robin and Marian (1973) starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and Robert Shaw Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) the Mel Brooks parody, which parodies many of the older Robin Hood movies, but especially 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' And there are two shows: Robin of Sherwood (1984-86) with 26 Episodes in total. The greatest weakness of this one is the budget, everything else is outstanding. Maid Marian and her Merry Men (1989-1994) also with 26 Episodes in total. This is the more funny one.
@rbrtckАй бұрын
Every Robin Hood story is different, but one interesting omission from this one is Prince John, the king's greedy, conniving younger brother who tries to steal his throne. I guess these filmmakers figured that he was kind of redundant, as the Sheriff of Nottingham is usually (but not always) the main villain against Robin anyway. Most other versions try to get something out of the interactions between the two different villains. And it's more plausible for John to steal the throne anyway, as Marian is not always related to King Richard.

This is one of the best Robin Hoods because it's a roller coaster ride of fun! I saw this in theaters when it was first released and had a blast just like you two did. The reason Sean Connery had a cameo is because he played Robin Hood in "Robin and Marian" (1976). If you want to react to another fun movie that happens to have one of the greatest cinematic villains ever put to screen then you two need to react to "Highlander" (1986). Can't wait to see you two react to that one.

I've always loved the Robin Hood story. I really enjoy all of them. I grew up with the Disney animated one and this one, but I think you'd really enjoy the Russell Crowe Robin Hood. I prefer the extended cut, but both versions are really good. Directed by Ridley Scott, they spent a lot of time researching Robin Hood and looking for the origins to the myth. Many believe that Robin Hood was loosely based on a real person or possibly multiple people. They also studied and trained as much as possible on the customs and fighting techniques of the time. I definitely suggest it and hope you'll decide to react to it someday.

Alan Rickman ended up rewriting some of his lines with some friends to make them funnier as he was not impressed with the script as written, which accounts for some of the tonal shifts. Plus he ad libbed a few lines too. Men in Tights riffs off both this film and the 30s Errol Flynn version you mentioned, so you are going in well-prepared!

I grew up on it and it holds so much nostalgia. Does it have problems? Sure. Is it still fun? Absolutely. Dances with Wolves is 100% a must watch (Regular cut not extended as the extended doesn't really add much). The Bodyguard is also a great movie.

I LOVE Friar Tuck in this movie, especially with the added scenes if the extended cut. He is exactly what a goid holy man should be - he has his beliefs, many if which are not good, but he knows he is a flawed human being and when events challenge his beliefs he takes them as lessons from his Lord and improves himself - if more people today, particularly those of religious mindsets, were like him the world would be a MUCH better place.

So, unfortunately no Rickman or Costner, (But you do get an excellent Tim Curry playing a very similar Character) but if you want another fun movie that is almost the exact same tone check out "The Three Musketeers" from 1993 with Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie sheen. I think that movie was trying to recreate the fun if this movie, so its very similar in a lit of ways.

@keithjohnson97122 сағат бұрын
The bad cuts you noticed are all because of the inserted director's cut scenes. In the original theatrical, you had no idea about Mortiana and the Sherriff's relationship. I feel like all the added scenes generally provide a lot more interesting context, but they didn't do a good job with the music as, AFAIK, they were added in much later. Director's cut scenes from memory: Several Mortiana scenes (including the confession and where she says to cut out scribe's tongue (hence the confusion later when he talks at the end)), the baron scene introducing the chief Celt (Pat Roach, look him up he's awesome, you've seen or will see him often), some forest and battle scenes, the scene where Robin rides the coach into the water, and the end prison scene is quite extended as well.

This is probably my favorite Robin Hood film and Robin Hood is my 25x great grandfather. I kid you not; my mom's cousin was researching the family tree and came across Robin Longstride Locksley a.k.a. Robin of Locksley a.k.a. Robin Hood. Richard the Lionheart is also a somewhat overhyped medieval king. He reigned 15 years and only spent 6 months of that in England. He was also more concerned with his possessions and titles in France than the throne of England. Sean Connery, a man so Scottish he can neither play an English king nor a Lithuanian Soviet submarine captain, was paid $250,000 for his cameo and I believe he donated it to charity.
@herodotus9452 ай бұрын
"He reigned 15 years and only spent 6 months of that in England. He was also more concerned with his possessions and titles in France than the throne of England" That was perfectly normal for a medieval monarch actually. I kind of hate to admit this, but a big part of being any kind of character is looking the part, so if the character is bad, it helps if the actor looks bad, and so forth. It's sort of a visual shorthand that makes it easier for the audience to willfully suspend our disbelief. Then, of course, filmmakers can deliberately subvert this in ways that would best take advantage of breaking this "rule", but admittedly it is sort of a "rule". 🤷♂

To be fair about the accent, at that point, they'd have all been speaking Old English and we wouldn't understand them anyway. The various American and British Englishes are all equally descended from it, so any one of them is as valid an interpolation as any other. That, of course, does not explain why everyone living in the same place has a DIFFERENT accent, but one accent they definitely would not have at the time is any modern British one.

In defense of Kevin Costner, the English accent everyone mentions that's lacking from his performance even if he could do one wouldn't be accurate because the English accent we know is a modern accent that has changed drastically compared to the English that would have been spoken in the film's era, up until the American revolution all European's are speaking the same English afterwards you have English and American English both change over time, but American English keeps to it's roots when it comes to pronunciation and vocabulary whereas English as we know today is very different from ours so in a tiny way Kevin Costner is speaking with a more accurate accent unlike some other Robin Hoods.

Fun facts about Costner's(lack of) British accent: 1) Costner did initially try to do a British accent. He have it up when others on set described it as offensiveky bad. (Note: this particuoar "fact" has been called into question recently but never expressly refuted) 2) The modern British accent is about as close to the accent of this era as Costner's own, so using British sccents as we know them would be JUST as inaccurate. 3) Robin of Locksley woukd have been a Norman, and as such he would have primarily spoken FRENCH, so not only are thise who bring it up worrying about an accent we can't knowingly replicate, they're worrying about THE WRONG ACCENT. This is why I don't give a crap about accents in ancient settings as long as the performance is otherwise good.
