Please sit back and enjoy the ride recorded using a camera mounted on the outside of the front windscreen. The first time I travelled the 33 kilometres from Cairns to Kuranda on one of Queensland Rails Kuranda Scenic Trains, I had no idea that the railway continued for another 391 kilometres to Forsayth and at one time connected Cairns with a network of branch lines serving the needs of the mines, agricultural and lumber industries as well as carrying all manner of goods required by the towns and villages served by the Tablelands Railways.
In this video we pass through a deserted Kuranda station long after the crowds had caught the last tourist train back to the coastal resort town of Cairns. Please get comfortable and join me for trip along one of Australia's most scenic stretches of railway line, built through some of the most hostile terrain imaginable.
Here is a little information about the train, mostly courtesy of Wikipedia -
The service was introduced on 3 April 1995 by Queensland Rail to replace the Forsayth Mixed (marketed as the 'Last Great Train Ride'). The line was closed from Mareeba to Mount Surprise at the same time. It was initially run with a 2000 class railmotor set that was refurbished at Townsville Workshops. Initially this service only ran on the Mount Surprise to Forsayth section of the Etheridge line. However, after an upgrade of the line for sugar syrup trains from Cairns to Arriga, and a limited restoration of the rest of the line, the railmotor started travelling from Cairns to Forsayth in September 1998. In 2004 it was decided to put the running of the train out to tender and the winning bid was submitted by “Cairns Kuranda Steam Pty Ltd”.

Fantastic video bro, shout out from a railfan in India. No commentary, excellent HD footage, no music. This is the way! I see too many similar vids wrecked with loud "music". The music is the sound of the engine, the wind, the environment, the wheels on the track, the brakes!

Hello my fellow Rail fan, I love India, especially the Shimla Railway. I try to get permission to mount a camera on the front of the train, preferably on the outside. On this trip I was really lucky, I was able to mount cameras inside and outside, allowing me to post two versions, one with just the natural sounds and another with commentary and chat between the driver's and the passengers. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

A ride on the Savannalander is a real adventure, it would be nice to think that one or two intrepid travellers will be inspired to include a ride on this train in their itineraries. I've got one or two more Queensland rail trips to share before I move on. Cheers, your support is appreciated 😊.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Oh, I didn't realise that the sound came from a separate exterior mic, I understand that wouldn't be possible on many trips, so I appreciate any driver's eye film you produce Tim, keep it up!! Thank you!

@@TheAeroflyGuy I am grateful to the drivers for allowing me to mount two GoPro cameras on their train, I learned a lot from from the results, viewers fall into two distinct camps, those who love the commentary and those who prefer the uninterrupted sound on the train.

I noticed that at 1.21.55 the signal facing any train that may have been coming from the opposite direction would also have had a clear run............................!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 ай бұрын
Hi, this was the only train operating at the time and the signallers were about to go home. When this happens, all signals are set to allow trains in either direction to pass as if they were not there and the section is operated on a one engine in steam basis. In the UK when a section is taken out of operation in this way it is said to be "Switched out".

I later thought that as the railmotor would have been reversing back over the same track, that the signal was pre-set. My mum was a stationmaster's daughter in NSW and has told me of some not so regulation habits ............like the time my grandfather caught the steam loco crew with the water bag full of plonk!@@Timsvideochannel1

@@billkellett2375 I think a lot has changed since the days your Mum remembers, although I imagine working on the railways in the past was a lot more fun than it is now with so many branch lines having closed and a much stricter discapin regiem on todays railways. My daughter is a signaller in the Devon UK in a box that hasn't changed in 100 years, it is operated using the Tyer's Electric Train Tablet system. Even today I see the train driver on the Looe branch line in the UK nip into the bub for a swift pint whilst waiting to take the train back up the branch.
