Watching this in 2024 it is amazing to look back and see how things were. There have been many changes along the route since this was recorded, especially the double-tracking from Upper Hutt to Trentham.

That's interesting. I have only been visiting New Zealand every 18 months or so since 2005 yet I've captured a lot of changes, on South Island I filmed several road/rail bridges between Hokitika and Greymouth along with the double deck road/rail bridge at Seddon. On North Island I captured the changes on the NIMT to Waikanae as electrification and track doubling extended from Paraparaumu. Most of the trains I saw in 2005 have now been replaced. I guess such modernisation is a good thing, but I miss the old road/rail bridges, I even came face to face with train on one of the bridges. There has also been a lot of changes in and around Auckland.

New Zealand, is very green. The population is small, to keep costs down, many stations are little more than a platform.

ABBA brings back a few memories from my miss spent youth, am I really that old? The driving cab is a noisy place, but it is great to hear a diesel engine working hard.

Long dwell time at Upper Hutt. Could speed up service even with the DE locomotives. Electrification to Masterton would mean much faster acceleration from stations and no fume problems in Rimutaka tunnel. Would also need electric locomotives for freight as well. Probably the full journey cut by ten minutes if this was instituted.

Hi, the railway to Masterton was surprisingly busy on the day I travelled, the service is pretty good and the carriages were comfortable, there is always room for improvement, although it is the route beyond Masterton that interests me, on my recent ride through the Manawatu Gorge I learned that the Wairarapa line between Woodville and Masterton has been mothballed preventing Steam Incorporated from running their Christmas circular tour via the gorge and the Wairarapa line. As a regular tourist to New Zealand I find the gaps in the passenger network very inconvenient forcing me to hire a car if I want to go to Napier, New Plymouth, Rotorua, Kingston for Queenstown and Dunedin. From the outside looking in it is very unwise to leave so many major tourist destinations without any regular passenger trains, especially now that Chinese tourists are turning the roads into death traps.

Incredibly long straights :)
@Timsvideochannel16 жыл бұрын
The alignment for much of the route would suit high-speed running, but all those level crossings and the track guage might pose a problem.
@paulwilliams736 жыл бұрын
they are not Incredibly long straights, just go over Australia, to Nullabour Plains a 478 kilometres (297 mi) stretch of dead-straight track

@ KiwiRail/Wellington Council serve the Wairarapa community well considering the low density of the population, I believe improvements are in the pipeline, I'd love to see at least one train a day run to Napier via this route.
@Timsvideochannel14 жыл бұрын
@ KiwiRail have started to post videos to KZbin showing some of the upgrade work taking place on the line North of Auckland, that was in a poor state of repair when I filmed a log train gingerly making its way along the tracks in 2008. Tourist trains don't need to be fast, but it helps if they exist, the only way to travel over the lines you mentioned is on one of Steam Incorporated's occasional excursion trains. I always try to time my visits with their tours.

@@Timsvideochannel1 The North Auckland line is being repaired because a port facility at Marsden point near Whangarei is being upgraded. So it all comes down to more freight movements (and the line needed bridge replacements, tunnel floor lowering, etc. And if there was enough of a market for slow tourist trains, more operators beyond the people in Dunedin would’ve looked into it. After all; these would be commercial enterprises that need to make a profit. And this is all a moot point anyway, because all international travel and tourism has been put on the skids by the COVID-19 pandemic. There simply isn’t enough of a domestic market for any of this. The fact is that your desired train between Wellington and Napier via the Wairarapa line would be a risky niche market operation. Very few New Zealanders would want to take it, and neither would most international travellers. At the end of the day; travellers want to get between destinations in short time. Maybe you should just inform people in the UK that New Zealand isn’t actually “clean and green”?

I just looked on Google Earth where the distance between the two places is given as 27 km. A fair distance, but adequate for the current train service.

Hello Tim, to me there is no difference between both cab views Wellington to Masterton. I prefer back trip from 'outback' bush to city. - Heinz.
@Timsvideochannel17 жыл бұрын
Hello Heinz, I was lucky enough to get permission to film this trip from the drivers cab, so I wanted to make sure I didn't screw it up, so I used two cameras in slightly different positions for each leg. When I watched them back with a friend in New Zealand, we each preferred different versions. As the video from each camera was OK I uploaded all of them. It will be interesting to see which is most popular. I also took video from the passenger seat, if that is OK, I will edit it to upload. On this visit to New Zealand with my wife I returned to some of my favorite places and a few new ones, I look forward to uploading these adventures over the coming months.

@Timsvideochannel17 жыл бұрын
The video is 1080p, but I have to agree there is some loss of quality between the KZbin version and my original, this is only to be expected as the KZbin version is optimized for streaming leading to a small loss in quality.

Oh how I would like to travel via train to welly instead of having to drive the 5 hours
@Timsvideochannel16 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda. I've driven into Wellington a few times, usually from Plimmerton or Paekakariki, the last bit into Wellington takes forever, then you've got to find somewhere to park, I usually take the train, its easier. I'm looking forward to my next visit to your beautiful country in Feb 2019.
@TheTwilighter266 жыл бұрын
Timsvideochannel1 I live in Hawke’s bay and the closest train to welly is 2 hour drive away and to fly cost around 100 or more just for seat and no bags one way so I’m not fortunate enough to do the trip. P.s I can’t believe the train gets a tunnel and traffic has to go over top of the rangers..... not fair I say
@Timsvideochannel16 жыл бұрын
I would love to have seen the original Rimutaka Incline Railway, closed when the tunnel was opened. Hawks Bay is a lovely place, I was fortunate enough to be on the annual passenger train to the Napier Tremains Art Deco Festival 2017 a real taste of the days when trains ran regularly between Napier and Wellington, the trip through the Manawatu Gorge was awesome. That's quite some road over the top of the Rimutaka range.

Seven minutes and 17 seconds spent at Carterton Railway Station! We're not all part-time workers! Far too long. Royal Enquiry will have to be called for on timetabling and coffee breaks.
@Timsvideochannel15 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, that's a long time to wait, was the train just waiting for the correct departure time or was it just a problem associated with the largely single track route?
@jholmzjholmz65925 жыл бұрын
Here we are talking about climate change and only 25 passengers boarded the train at Featherston. What about all those folk living in Martinborough? When was the last time you saw Fred Ziffel leave his Remuera Tractor at Featherston and go by train to Wellington to hand in his tax return?
@Timsvideochannel15 жыл бұрын
Considering the railway served a sparsely populated area the service was reasonably good. Would you like to see the service improved, with more integrated bus connections or do you think the money could be better spent elsewhere?
4 жыл бұрын
Not a lot of people live in Featherston. And not everyone who lives there has a good reason to catch a train to Wellington. 25 boardings is actually pretty good.
