Hello, I agree this train is all about the ride rather than the destination, although for younger children its just perfect, with a rare breeds farm at one end and a butterfly farm and otter sanctuary at the other, my children used to love visiting this railway.

Thanks indeed for the ride down memory train. In 1972 and 1973 I worked a 2 week volunteer stint at the railway as part of a group of students from East Herts College. Wonderful memories indeed. Loved doing the work. The route seems a lot less "straggly" than it was back then. Also we did get to enjoy sitting on the buffers of the loco when we went to Totnes to move a lot of rail from the BR 'side' of things to the DVR side.

They are some wonderful memories, especially riding on the buffers. The railway has matured into one of Devon's most popular tourist attractions, especially as visiting the railway, otter sanctuary, butterfly farm and rare Breeds farm can all be done on one reasonably priced ticket. Back in the mid eighties my kids loved to spend a day visiting the attractions, although I don't think the rare breeds farm had opened back then. I guess most of the trains on the BR lines were locomotive hauled when you visited.

Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride, Totnes is one of my favourite towns, its a place where old hippies have settled giving it a slightly bohemian atmosphere, many of the shops are independents, the High Street is not one line of chain stores as might be found in most UK towns. There is a vineyard producing some decent wines, and plenty to keep visitors with young children occupied, there is a butterfly farm and otter sanctuary a Buckfastliegh, next to the Totnes end of the line is a rare breeds farm. I hope you had good nights sleep, my father used to fall asleep within minutes whenever we traveled by train 🙂

@@Timsvideochannel1 Totnes sounds like my sort of a town, I am bohemian by nature. 😅 Love otters; I follow on YT a Japanese couple that go by the name of ma ko and they keep an otter as a pet together with a very patient cat. The otter's name is Sakura and she is just so cute and a fun pet to have. I had a good sleep Tim, thank you, I hope you do too. I have to go to sleep earlier than probably most people because I am getting up early to release and feed my beloved chickens. 🥰🐔🥰

@@OmniaInNumerisSitaSunt The bohemian sense of humor is everywhere in Prague, one of my favorite cities, I love looking in the shop windows at the artwork, it's created to make people smile. My wife and I took my mother and my daughter to a local zoo a couple of months ago, we might all be the wrong side of 21, but it was still enjoyable watching the animals including a comical bunch of otters. I grew up in a village, as kids most of us worked on local farms, at twelve years old it came as a bit of a shock when a cowman told me to sick my hand up a cow to release a calf that was breached, when it was all over and we managed to get the cow and the calf out of the ditch they were trapped in, I felt good, it was nice to see the calf grow and become part of the milking herd. Even in my English suburban back garden there is plenty of wildlife. I often point my camera at animals, leaving me with a disjointed mass of short animal clips. I used some of them to make this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqaxi4elbrKfiZI Chickens are fun, some of them are quite happy to be picked up carried around like a pet, have you got any like that?

My parents are both Hungarian and come from farming families, so love for the animals, nature and land cultivation is in my DNA. I have a small herb garden and veggie garden in my backyard that I find very useful, since cooking is another passion of mine. Hungarians are well known for their cooking and it's a rare Hungarian that doesn't know how to cook, even when it comes to the males. I will look at your short animal clips video. As you say chickens are fun, I love the different breeds, like Welsummers, Orpingtons, Wyandottes, Leghorns, Thai Game, etc. I have a Thai Game rooster worth over $200 but I got him for $10 from an animal shelter. He was seized and brought there because his Asian owners used him for fighting; a cruel and brutal thing to do. This rooster that we call Phoenix because of his lovely ash grey and vivid red feathers is incredibly affectionate. You can pick him up and hold him and he loves the attention. I can pick up all the hens as well. They all have names and they are pets, we only use their eggs but they live their lives out naturally, some of them up to 9 years. I'll upload some pics of them to my YT channel in the future and will point them out to you. 💖🐔🐔🐓🐔🐔💖

@@OmniaInNumerisSitaSunt Hi, I am English, living in Sussex on the South Coast and "yes" I was referring to Prague in the Czech Republic, it was our base for a week as part of a rail-tour I was on called "Snow and Steam in Bohemia" considering it took place in February we didn't see as much snow as we'd hope to see. I enjoy touring the countries that were once behind the iron curtain because nearly all of the rail infrastructure is still in place, although some of branch lines rarely see a train other than the odd rail-tour. The food is always good, simple, yet tasty, the way I like it. My mother-in-law, now sadly passed away was originally from Poland, she came to England after falling for her husband who was a British soldier in Poland at the end of WW2 , she was a cook at two local restaurants, we knew the evenings when she was working, because the restaurants we full, her cooking was the best I've ever tasted (I hope my wife doesn't read this). I've only visited Hungary briefly, I was hoping to spend 10 days there on a rail-tour last year, sadly Covid put an end to that, maybe next year now that things are opening up again. My neighbor's daughters keep quails, they are always giving us eggs, they are small with pretty patterns on them, they look more like ornaments than eggs. The Thai Game rooster as lucky to get a new life with someone like yourself. Several members of my family keep chicken as pets although it goes without saying they eat the eggs. I've always had a cat, sometimes two, I find them very relaxing and the way they make us do what they want us to do is amazing. I wouldn't like to live somewhere where animals weren't allowed, I get a lot of pleasure from watching the wildlife in my garden. I look forward to seeing your chickens 🙂

I'm taking a break from designing 3 mould tools, for a cup of coffee and to catch up with my Emails. Seeing "Swarf Rat" made me smile, because that will be me for next 4 months because I can't find anyone to make mould tools these days without going to China, I'd hoped to sell my machinery and retire, but that won't be happening for a while now, I might even keep it to make a 7 ¼ inch gauge steam locomotive. I'd only get under my wife's feet if I didn't keep myself busy. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, the South Devon Railway is a real gem. Our forefathers worked hard, but their lives were far more straight forward, people knew what was expected of them, things aren't so clear cut these days. I think I have been very lucky to live through what is probably the best period in British history. It's nice to hear from you, I hope you are keeping well. Cheers. Tim.

@@extraction8942 I enjoy making films, although there are times when I wish I was brave enough to narrate some of them, the trouble is that I don't like the sound of my own voice and narration would require a lot of time for research. @@extraction8942 Shooting and editing videos is always a bit of a challenge, I never stop learning and I often find new things in Studio that I didn't know existed. When it comes to using computers for my job as a design engineer/toolmaker or for my hobby, I've never had a lesson in using either the software or the computer itself, I press all the buttons to see what they do, I get there in the end, it does take a while sometimes. Devon (England) is a wonderful county with pretty scenery and a fascinating coastline that I will explored in another video to be uploaded before Christmas. The railway itself runs next to the river for most of its length, it is typical of the once extensive network of rural lines that used to serve almost every significant town in the West of England.

Hi Robert, this railway is about 160 miles from my home, in Australian terms it's in my back yard, but when it comes to congested British roads, it's about a four hour journey. It is a beautiful part of the world, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.
