Timur, or Tamerlane, was the leader of the Mongol Empire and the Muslim World in the 14th century.

Timur was a cattle thief as a youngster and a member of the Chagatai Khanate army. There, he showed his leadership and battle skills and soon was getting promoted.
After the death of the khan, the khanate was faced with political unrest and land claims from other khans. Timur used this situation to weaken all opponents, by switching from side to side multiple times. Once he was the strongest, Timur became an all-powerful amir of his khanate.
Timur helped the khan of Golden Horde against the Russians, and soon after invaded Persia. There, he was met with little or no resistance and his conquering was swift. However, Golden Horde wanted to use this situation to attack him but Timur easily won against them and occupied Moscow.
In the following years, Timur conquered almost the whole of Persia and parts of Egypt, the Ottomans and India. He was ruthless against the enemy and would often kill most of the population of the conquered cities. He is believed to have wiped out around 17 million people.
During the last days of his reign, Timur was preparing for invasion against China but fell ill and died before the attack could take place.

But what I love about him is ego about being a successor to the Mongols and the Muslims. Cool stuff. Another reason we don't hear about him much is because he never had much of a direct engagement with Europe.

Probably just because of how much of an evil bastard he really was, those 3 you mentioned have some redeeming qualities about them, Napoleon spread the enlightenment ideas through Europe, Alexander was a tactical genius who's still studied today, The Great Khan was well known as a tolerant meritocrat (for the time.). Timur? he asks a city to surrender and promises "there will be no bloodshed" if they do: They surrender, he has them all buried alive in the city.

Nicky Bluemenshire well, to be fair Alexander did the same with Persepolis, but probably because he was drunk that day, in reality Alexander did a lot of crazy shit when he was drunk, like killing Cleitus the black, one of his best friends and a loyal general.
@tyisen5125

Nicky Bluemenshire by far that is the most stupid comment in this place. Timur studied the many Islamic books, Commentaries of Quran, had a major role in Turkic Literature and poetry, philosophy to an impressive extent. and for his time, he was pretty merciful to his citizens, and living in central Asia was a prestige considering the life in Europe at that time. he was a decisive Governor too, with no corruption in government or Army (impressive for his time, when prince's of Europe stayed alive because of corruption ).
@bryanquijanesortega3221
@bryanquijanesortega3221 7 жыл бұрын
Yusuf Umut Ateş Studying islamic books and Quran commentaries is not really an achivement. I wouldn't consider him a benevolent ruler, despite knowing that western historians sometimes exagerate the number of atrocities comited. He was brutal even for his time and culture standards. In the case of corruption I agree with you, he was an efficient ruler in that aspect.

@@galaatsogoo7877 Why we are in anatolia? Well Seljuqs won against Eastern Rome in Battle of Manzikert (1071). A lot of Turkic tribes moved to Anatolia. But the native population still outnumbered them. Native population was Greek. Turkic ruling class assimilated and mixed with Greeks. We have about 10-15% Central asian, 20-25% Greek, 30-40% West Asian (Iranian, Armenian etc.) dna. If you look at the dna results of Turkish people (They share it on KZbin) there is no Arab dna unless they are from the south eastern part of Turkey. Arab culture? Only islam. While Turkey is a majority muslim country it is also secular. Atheist population increased 3 times between years 2008-2018. Turkish people don't practice islam like Arabs do. Most of them don't even pray 5 times a day.

Ruy Gonzales De Clavijo, a Spanish nobleman who went to the palace of Timur to Samarkand as ambassador, stated in his book The Life of Timur & Travels from Kadiz to Samarkand, that Timur was descended from a noble generation of Turk immigrants who boasted of their lineage. [14] While Richard Bulliet says that Barlas has nothing to do with Mongols,[15] Rene Grousset [16] states that Timur's ancestry is based on Genghis in the books written in his time, whereas Timur is not related to Mongols and says that Timur is Turk.. Who were the Timurids? Ulugh Beg was the grandson of Timur, known in the west as Tamerlane, or 'Timur the Lame', due to a leg injury sustained in battle. Timur is turcified mongol.He believes he is a Turk speaks turkish in daily life,his tribe barulas or barlas believed to be mongol but they speak turkish aswell,mongols were a minority in the lands they conquered so they ended up getting assimilated by people who they conquered( kubilai of china for examle,muslim ilhanates for example,golden horde for example)he also speaks chagatai and persian aswell as turkish.So most healthy judgement would be calling him Turco-Mongol.Europeans liked Timur even named their sons after him because he defeated Bayazid whom before defeated whole europe combined at battle of nicopolis.It's kinda like saladin who was originally arab from Yemens Rahlawi tribe getting assimilated in azerbaijan by kurdish harzawi tribe when they migrated later to Tikrit.

for everybody who dont understand the difference between Mongolia and Mongol Empire 1. the word "mongol" has a meaning in old Turkic and means "eternal/undefeated" 2. "Mongolia" is a political name. This can be compared with Americans in the United States. Who are the Americans? England, Africa, Italy, France and other places to come here to live. Or we were all former Soviet people, but nobody spoke in the Soviet language. Kazakhs in Kazakh language, Russians spoke Russian. Only Turks lived in the deserts of Asia during the period of Cengiz Khan. They include Tatars, Kerey, Celery, Nayman, and so on. was divided. Ancient writings say one of the days when Chinese ambassador Menhun is going to meet Cengiz Khan, but the conqueror is not there. Thus, the ambassador talks with the governor of Cengiz Khan, Mughali. "Who are you?" He asks, "I am tatar". Previously, the Tatars were very respected. Genghis Khan was surrounded by people of different nationalities. When he decided to create his own state, he united all nations under one name. So how should the people of so many nations call themselves? The word "Mongolia" was the most neutral and powerful word. 3.The present-day Mongol-Mongolian language appeared in the 17th century when the Manchurians conquered them. The Mongols invaded China and ruled here for 100 years until the Chinese took them out. The Chinese took half of the population with the sword and killed twice. After the death of Cengiz Khan, the struggle for power began between the elites. As a result, the number of people living in the XVII century, the Turkish population itself, and the number of Turkish-speaking population decreased to 60,000. Those who saw it were captured in Mongolia. Their language was sharply different from Turkish. 100 years later, the Tungut-Turk-Mancur language, which we now call Khalkha-Mongol language, formed the language mix.

Timur called himself Turkic in one of he's quote's so let's stop discussing this. It is true that Barlas and Borijin come from the same ancestor wich makes chingis khan Turkic too. There was not a thing called ''mongol'' before Chingis khan. Chinese sources tells us that Chingis khan came from the Turkic Shato clan, the same as the ''KökTurks'' from the Ashina clan.

It is funny to see the comments about he was turk or mongol and argue about it. Or comparing with other great leaders. For me, all of them different in their own way. As i have learned each persona in 3 different historical idealogy (western, russian mostly ussr, asian) I would assume that each contex has its own difference which can be used to influence. Some wrote about Napaleon who reestablished France and tried to invade russia, or Alexander the great who massacered the asia and europe and build an empire where peace and prosperity lived. Similarly, Emir Timur did the same, he conquered the place, depopulated if needed and built the cities from scratch like Baghdad, Bukhara, Urgench, Khiva, eastren borders of central asia, more cities in iran and syria. Also, established justice and peace in countries in his dominance. Yes it brutal, noone can deny but the time required it. If you dont kill you will be killed. And i think it is not fair to brutalize or vandalize his name while cheering alexander, ceasar or napaleon who wère as bad or as good as him. And it is not right to insult each other here without knowing a real history or laughing at others who does. In some cases I think most people brainwashed with sources in media about history. Because man who red some book about these people won't shame himself. Peace everyone. ✌

Stop heroizing murderers! Timur was a ruthles conquerer who murdered the populations of his subjugated countries and cities by hundreds of thousands, including the Sultanate of Delhi, the Kingdom of Georgia, Persia, including ruthlessly striking down any kind of uprisings. He murdered 70 000 Persians in Isfahan and 90 000 Arabs in Baghdad. It is astonishing how European historians tend to heroize the greatest butchers of history, the way they do with Alexander of Macedonia or Genghis Khan and now Timur. They were as evil as Hitler but yet get so much respect. Perhaps because it is sooo far away from Europe and had no impact on them.

The Uzbekis represent a fine example of Caucasoid-Mongoloid Hybrids. They exhibit physical characteristics of both. You may as well argue over genetic haplogroups at least that would be more accurate.

The Timurid state was never the Mongol empire.It was the Turkic empire.I am very bored with the propaganda you do everywhere. for example Timur: " We are Melik of Turan, Amir of Turkestan. We are sons of Turk. I am the Bashbug(leader) of the oldest and greatest nation! Sharaf ad-Din Ali Yazdi 15th century ZAFARNAME (biografy of Timur)

The Timurid Empire was a powerful, conquest-driven empire that devolved into disunited dynasties more noted for artistic than political endeavors. Tamerlane (Timur Lang) (1336-1405) was not a Mongol but emerged out of the chaos of post-Mongol Turkistan. www.encyclopedia.com/religion/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/empires-timurid
