I think the problem with these "authors" is that they never grow out of fan fiction. All they want to write is self-inserting fan fictions, but since nobody actually reads fan fiction, they have to infest totally unrelated IPs and as you point out, bend the characters to make them fit in their weird mental universe.

Not only was Vita Ayala's Children Of The Atom terrible, it was demonstrably NOT in the same universe as the other X-Men comics. Tini Howard talks and acts like she's selling millions of comics to millions of readers. And it'd be one thing if writers like Tini Howard, Vita Ayala, and so many others these days sold books. But they don't. They don't sell many books, their books aren't read by many people, and they choose to dismiss all criticism under the guise of "it wasn't written for you!". It wasn't written for me? That's fine, but you'd better hurry up and get the people it was written for to start buying the book before Marvel wises up and tosses you because your books don't sell. Excalibur and Knights of X are not selling well not because people want Brian Braddock to be Captain Britain, but because Tini Howard turned off a lot of Betsy Braddock fans who were ORIGINALLY excited to see Betsy lead a team (since Chris Claremont's shortlived Outback X-men days, when the team was down to her, Colossus, Dazzler, and Havok!) and showcase her new powers! The Betsy Braddock fansite, Psylocke-Butterfly, did a poll one or two months ago on who the worst Betsy Braddock writer is, and Tini Howard won the the poll UNANIMOUSLY! I said it before and I say it again. Tini Howard's Betsy Braddock had zero personality to the point that she was a supporting character in her own comic book series (much like how Brian Azzarello made Wonder Woman a supporting character to the Greek gods in her own series during the New 52).

What I wish Tini Howard and her ilk would understand is that most comic fans don't care about if a character is gay. We want a story. Chris Claremont wrote a better lesbian romance w/ Destiny and Mystique back in the 80s because he wrote them as CHARACTERS, complex people who just happened to be villains in a common law marriage and raising Rouge together. He made their bond obvious w/o having to actually having to say the "L" word (because 80s censorship).

They were never shown as lesbian lovers in the 1980s. They were just only shown as best friends, business partners and partners-in-crime. It wasn't until the early 1990s that their relationship was retconned into having them both be immortal and married just as well. I hated it when they had changed their relationship from one of mentor and protégé to just gay couple. I had always found it to be very stupid, completely unnecessary, and way too contrived.

Perfect example of failing your way upwards--in this case in the comics industry. If Tini Howard had her comic book cancelled after only 2 issues during the Jim Shooter era of Marvel she would have promptly been shown the door. In today's Marvel making money doesn't seem to matter. The only thing that matters, apparently, is spreading "the message" ever since the time of the failed "all new, all different" era of stories. Disney doesn't care anyway since pretty soon they'll shutter the comic book offices as being an unnecessary money drain and license out the making of the comics to other companies. Why would you pay employees to produce comics when someone can pay you to produce them instead?

I stopped buying Catwoman when she replaced Ram V. I'm also a big fan of Remender Uncanny X-Force. I loved Psylocke as a character and her interactions with Angel & Fantomex. However, I could never get behind this new "Captain Britain" thing. It killed all my hype for that character.

I wonder why it is they won't finally consummate the Rachel/Kitty relationship...? Good writing and character development takes months and years to come to fruition, and Chris Claremont made character development look so effortless I think we took his skill for granted. He set so many things up, often quite subtle things in terms of character development, but we have (longsince) arrived at the point with the X-Men where there is no consistency, and no interest in consistency. So yeah. Rachel and Betsy are revealed to have had along simmering romance that no one knew about, why not.... anything goes today because basically no one involved in producing these books cares about them anymore. But Rachel and Kitty. That would be an organic coupling as it was one of Claremont's subtle longterm character developments. If they suddenly consummated that relationship no one would seriously call it, as it is something alluded at since the late 1980s.... back when the books and the characters had a strong consistency, and development was an organic and natural process.

@@davidmullen6011 I always just saw them as having just a close friendship because of the Days Of Future Past story. Rachel Summers always looked up to Kate Pryde growing up. Then she travels back in time and sideways in time, and meets Kate's younger, past self as Kitty Pryde, and took on the role of the one who is looked up to. Like a reversal of mentor roles as a way to keep their friendship alive in a new way because the original one is gone, and the Shadowcat she knew is long since dead. There was nothing homosexual about it. It was a longing for a lost platonic love that Rachel was having a hard time letting go of. Claremont is a Hollywood buy in and sell out to soy woke S.J.W.s. He claims that it was always his intention to make the friendship of Kitty and Rachel "gay coded" but because of the big bad censorship, he was never allowed to explicitly show anything romantic between them. Yeah right. Who is he bullshitting? Chris is just trying to remain relevant by scoring woke points with the N.P.C.s because he is an old has been, and a straight white man amongst the P.C. Mafia who is just trying to not get cancelled on Twitter for merely existing. And yet, you actually still believe his fake news, too. (facepalm) 🤦‍♂️ smh 😑

Marvel and DC really need to clean house and unceremoniously boot all these untalented fanfic writers to the curb, then reboot their entire universes (again). X-Men is now beyond saving without a total reality reboot. The Marvel Universe as a whole is quickly following suit. I used to scoff at the idea that Marvel (and DC) could go extinct, but now I kind of hope they do. Their current output is terrible with only a few exceptions, which is the complete opposite of just a few years ago. (I say this as an unapologetic superhero fanboy since 1984.)

Don't take this the wrong way, brother, but I just had to stop listening. Nothing against you at all. But right in the middle of the bs about her "posse", something just snapped. I'd been sort of hanging on as a comic book fan. It felt wrong - on a molecular level - to not stop at the comic shop on a Wednesday. Not only was it something I did for the majority of my life, but my fiance and I have been together 6 years, and bonding over comics was one of the first things we did together. We would look forward to Wednesdays not just for the comics but the experience of it, from a socialization standpoint. But around 2017 or so, I started seeing less and less of the people that I would see every week - some I knew by sight only, some by name, and some had become friends. One by one, they disappeared, until only a handful remained. When it all started, I didn't know anything about this garbage. I just noticed a DECIDED lack of quality in the writing (and the art, frankly), but I kept buying. Then I ran into a friend who I hadn't seen at the shop in a while. She had been battling breast cancer, and some of us thought she had finally succumbed, as she was very private, no internet presence, etc. When I saw her out of the blue last year, she had put all of her weight back on (not a shot at her, she is just a bigger girl) and I asked why we didnt see her on Wednesdays anymore. As one who understands the importance of our time on this earth, she hit her forehead and said, DO NOT TELL ME YOU ARE STILL BUYING CURRENT COMICS!! (Her girlfriend always walks away in these moments, as nothing and no one is going to stop her from voicing - and I mean VOICING - her opinion). She said something to the affect of, If I wanted see people like me in spandex, I'd wear spandex!! (Something like that - and by her she meant a larger girl with pink hair and a girlfriend). I laughed it off. I'm not laughing anymore. My fiance was smarter than I was. When she tried to read that Mary-Jane book a few years back, she got to a page where Pete and Mj are on the phone, but apparently that didn't stop them from having a dance party, and we got a full page spread of, yes, Pete and Mj cutting a rug in different time zones. That was her "cross the Rubicon" moment. Now she only buys third party or back issues every now and then. And sadly, this is where I am now, too. I thought there were enough decent writers around in the big two to keep me interested, but there's only so much Zdarsky and Tynion can do. So, sorry for the long diatribe, and I'm even more sorry for waiting so long for the industry to right itself. It never will. And I am honest with you when I say, that breaks my heart. But the big two are in the hands of people who think tic toc is the 8th wonder of the world. So, so long, Wednesdays at the comic shop. You can keep the silverware and Nightcrawler's tail.

I really dont understand the endgame of these new writers. It seem like they go out of their way to make the "Hetero" person look bad and incompetent while their LGBTQ characters are presented as holier than thou. Brian is a great character that didnt deserve that and Tini, Vita, and all the other writers think they are being cheeky when they say these things. A large portion of the comic population sort of are men and women who are in their mid to late 20s onward. Most of the younger demographics are reading mangas, so why are trying so hard to upset their core audience? Also I know this is nothing new but every one has 0 accountability for their failures.

I know it wasn't the most popular part of the Marvel universe but I always really liked Captain Britain stories especially Alan Moores work and later Excalibur. But it feels like that property can be revived after all this. All the X writers are just so terrible or at best mediocre.
