One question I hear a lot is, "How long does it take to habituate and find relief?" It’s an important question, and unfortunately, the answer varies wildly from person to person depending on a few different factors.
So stay with me to the end, because I will answer the question. But first, I need to explain a little bit more about what it feels like to habituate, and take a closer look at the various stages of relief you will likely experience as you go through the process.

I can't emphasise enough how much a positive attitude takes you when it comes to tinnitus. In my experience anyway. I'm a month into it coming on for me now. The first week I was an emotional wreck. Visibly very low, angry, frustrated. I even told my girlfriend that I didn't want to live. Then I just thought 'No way am I going to let this beat me', and committed to just going about my everyday life, doing the things I wanted to do and when I wanted to do them. I'd say I'm now at the stage where my quality of life has drastically improved. I run, work out, see friends and family. The things I love doing. Since then I've improved so much. I still hear it when I wake up first thing in the morning and go to bed at night, also when I'm in quiet environments, and also when I deliberately listen out for it (which I'm trying hard not to do). But I also thought to myself 'If I didn't have tinnitus, would I deliberately put myself in a quiet room and try and listen out for a noise in my head?'. Clearly I wouldn't. So why do it now? I know it's easier said than done, but anyone new to it, please just go about your life in the way you want to. I know it's incredibly difficult, but doing that also helps you focus on other things, and trains your brain to think 'Oh, this noise isn't important'.. I believe in my habituation methods and I genuinely expect to get there one day. Clearly I have moments when I get down or annoyed about it - Im only human - but I try and also have perspective too. I'm healthy, fit, and have a loving family. The support and love I feel from those factors outweighs the negative of tinnitus by 100 times. Hang on in there. You can do it. Tinnitus will NOT beat you.

It seems like I'm at stage 1 after 2 years. My tinnitus is very severe so I can hear it throughout my day, even over loud traffic or music. Only thing that masks it are high pitched maskers (even at low volume for some reason). It doesn't give me anxiety like it did 2 years ago, but spikes and bad days still are pretty hard. At least I'm not depressed anymore. My quality of life is still alot lower than before I had tinnitus though.

Unfortunately, many people will not just habituate naturally over time. But you can actively work towards habituation and take steps to make it happen. Check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6Hbq6SGg6yYba8 (You may also find this helpful, I was recently interviewed by the American Tinnitus Association: bit.ly/2zYqX1u)

What I said is that not everyone habituates automatically over time, but everyone can actively work to habituate. I didn't habituate naturally over time, it just got worse. I had to implement a strategy and work towards it every day.

I have had tinnitus for one year now. I am still trying to fight this. Been to 3 ENTs already but found no relief in the prescribed meds at all. You, sir, are a great help! Just found your channel and of course subscribed! 😊 My major concern, though, is this: Does having tinnitus mean you are going to go deaf after a few years? I mean my tinnitus started after having a really bad cold, not really noise-induced. I don't go to loud concerts or listen to loud music. I had two hearing tests already and both showed no hearing loss. I really love playing the saxophone. I am not in a band, I just play solo at church and play mostly soft ballads and hymns. Been playing for a few years even before this tinnitus. Can I still continue to play? 😭😭😭 I don't want to give up playing saxophone and even piano or just music in general 😭

Coincidentally mine also started in 2013 and I habituated in 2015 and with ups and downs finally two weeks ago I couldn’t get it in the background again. Like my feelings towards tinnitus changed or something (probably stress). So how are you now?

often tinnitus comes with hyperacusis. What about habituation for people with tinnitus and hyperacusis? What kind of steps to make first?
@RewiringTinnitus
@RewiringTinnitus 6 жыл бұрын
The approach to tinnitus habituation would be the same, as the tinnitus focused meditation techniques seem to help improve hyperacusis somewhat as well. It's a closely related phenomenon experienced by about 40% of tinnitus sufferers. Calming the nervous system is going to help a lot, but other therapies, such as hyperacusis desensitization can be helpful as well.

self-improvement program 6. Work out your brain. Sudoku, puzzles, riddles, board games, video games, card games, and similar activities increase neuroplasticity. This encompasses a wide variety of of changes in neural pathways and synapses that is basically the ability of the brain to reorganize itself. When nerve cells respond in new ways, that increases neuroplasticity, which allows us more ability to see things from different points-of-view and understand the cause and effect of behaviors and emotions. We become aware of new patterns and our cognitive abilities are improved. Considering that neuroplasticity is involved in impairments such as tinnitus, an increased amount can help prevent certain conditions. For instance, people with high neurplasticity are less prone to anxiety and depression while learning faster and memorizing more.
