In this video I look at two small Ash (Fraxinus excelsior) bonsai trees that I collected as seedlings around two or three years ago and potted them up just for fun, thinking nothing much would come of them.
Sadly one of them had signs of a problem and during the inspection. Root rot was found to be the cause of the issue.
I potted one of the two seedlings up in a Pot Noodle pot and the other in a small bonsai pot. Ash trees are big trees in the wild and have large leaves so they are not commonly used as bonsai.
So with the two Ash bonsai treesI have, I removed them from their pots, washed the roots, gave them a root prune, cut away some of the rotten roots from the affected one, then planted them into a large container.
I'm unsure if I need to cut all the rotten wood away to 'stop the rot' but there was not much of a root base left. Time will tell if they recover. Plenty more seedlings are growing just now at the time of recording this video so I won't be too disappointed if they do not survive.
Thanks for watching
