They are NOT living in the city of San Francisco or anywhere within half an hour drive as SF and its surrounding cities are have hills and do not look like suburbs. They are at least an hour away, which is fine, but they shouldn't confuse people. They can take Bart into the city. Kuddos for getting a tiny house as that's seems to be the only way for non-executive employees to be able to afford a house (tiny) and live in the Bay Area.

Yeah definitely not SF maybe SJ or somewhere along 101 “peninsula” area. Looks like downtown SJ in the distance. The hills looks dry so that’s definitely looking towards the East bay. The west side always has green hills for the most part with lots of trees.

Wholly agreed! There is no way that is located in the City/County of San Francisco. They're somewhere in a suburb. In San Francisco; NO neighborhood looks like that, NO residential view of a nearby Freeway looks like that ... and, God knows that NO ONE IN SAN FRANCISCO is "DRIVEN OUT INTO THE BACKYARD BY THE HEAT!!. That's laughable.

Hi guys! We're the family in the video. :-) We've been reading some of the comments about SF vs. Bay Area, and I wanted to address those. Please forgive me for not responding to each comment individually, and I hope this helps. Thank you to those who already understand and spoke up. It was not our intent to mislead anyone. It's obvious that we do not live in an urban environment in the video. We have moved all over the Bay Area with different parking spots, but work and play every day in the city. It is common to refer to a major metro as a reference point when you live in a surrounding suburb, especially when not speaking with locals. When someone ask me where I'm from, I say Birmingham, Alabama because that's where people recognize, even though I technically grew up in Hoover, a suburban city outside of the Birmingham metro area. Our audience is typically not from from Bay Area, so we've found San Francisco to make the most sense to everyone. Also, we do hope to inspire people who want to go tiny in San Francisco. Most people who relocate to San Francisco for work or otherwise, especially with families, live in the Bay Area rather than the city. Where you land, it is wildly expensive, and a tiny house made this whole dream - moving to SF to pursue a tech career - possible. We are able to live on a single income, work in San Francisco, play in the gorgeous Bay Area, spend more time with kids and traveling, and pay about 1/3 what everyone else does. We're on a fast track to pay off our tiny house and be financially independent in our early 30s. Hope that helps. Again, sorry for any confusion and thanks for watching

Thanks so much for adding this comment guys!! I understand what you're saying and I'm sure that you weren't trying to mislead anyone. We've lived outside Toronto for many years but when people asked us we still said Toronto just because there was a better chance that they would recognize the place and get a better sense of the area. Thanks so much sharing your story and I really hope that it will inspire others to live the life they want to live :)

I think the comments about location are pretty silly tbh. Not really the point of the video at all. But, I completely understand what you're saying. I live in a small city on the outskirts of Albany, NY. When I talk to people, even my family in Indiana, I say I live in Albany. It's the capital of the state, and the surrounding cities are referred to as the Capitol region or capital district by locals. If you aren't a local, you aren't gonna know or get that so it just makes more sense to simplify and say Albany.

You guys have tried out many conventional options that cost a lot in rent, but learned what you like and didn't like, which was a smart way to plan your tiny home. As you told your story, it became more apparent how difficult "normal life" has become for today's young couples, and I felt sad when compared to my _Silent Generation's_ options (those born during WW2). However, you've adapted to your 21st century reality and made a good plan for the future.

I totally understand why ppl are commenting about the location bc I live in the Bay Area and was wondering where in the city you would put a tiny house. I lived in the city for 20 months and finding real estate to put a tiny house is like no way, plus the rent of parking it there would be costly. Nice house though but actual living in the Bay Area costs an arm and a leg plus commute is horrible. Nice family. Enjoy all your videos as one day I would like to have a tiny house myself.

Victoria Mather I agree. The comments nick picking their whereabouts is ridiculous. The SF Bay Area is WIDE, so what is the hangup with these viewers? People that are hard to please no matter what you try to share are the real road blocks in life.
@jaymeez
@jaymeez 7 жыл бұрын
I guess people lying to you is just hunky dory, huh? Let me put it in context why this is troubling. Millions of people want to move to SF but due to costs many will not make it. But lets say someone is led to believe it is feasible to do what this couple did and buy a tiny house and move right into "San Francisco" When they spend all their resources and finally reach SF and find out it is absolutely not possible to do (and never was possible) the video they saw was misleading and in fact a blatant fraud because the couple doesn't live in SF. Maybe that scenario doesn't matter to you but that is the by product of lies and misleading others. You can ruin peoples lives, but as you said maybe I'm just "nit picky and hard to please"
@gonewiththekale
@gonewiththekale 7 жыл бұрын
jaymeez San Fransisco BAY AREA the title states and so does the family. Do you adhere to your own Fake News or something? You are full of wrongful assumptions and criticism about a family that you know NOTHING about. Did you even watch any of their videos on their channel? Of course you didn’t, that is obvious, otherwise you would know they network with other tiny-housers in the SAN FRANSISCO BAY AREA, and that Houzz even did a feature on them. They are in the Bay area dude, if you don’t want to believe that, then fine for you, make up your own reality if it makes you sleep at night. Also, if you're worried about people making their entire life decision on what this family shared in a 12-minute video, without doing any of their own research, I have to say too bad so sad for such an idiot. Anyway, please stop making a mockery out of this inspiring story with your fraud accusations. This is a young family, WITH A CHILD, and they are striving to make their dreams come true and they merely shared a small piece of that here. But, yes, as I said, you are the nit picky and there is no pleasing you.

Just for clarification, in this video it is stated they "Live" in San Francisco. The video shows a neighborhood which the tiny home is parked and I'm 100% sure it's not in San Francisco. Maybe it's in a neighboring city or as some people will refer to any city in the Bay Area as San Francisco, but this for sure is not in the city of San Francisco.
@mrtimothylee
@mrtimothylee 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This is not feasible in the city of San Francisco and even many of the surrounding areas of San Francisco. If it's in the SF Bay Area, they're probably at least an hour out of the city of SF. This would be amazing if it could actually be in the city!!! But... the title is misleading...
@jaymeez
@jaymeez 7 жыл бұрын
As I said man it's absolute click bait, not on the part of Exploring Alternatives (as they didn't even go to the location to film) but by the two in the video. If they said San Jose as the city name instead of San Francisco it would get radically less views and less attention to their channel. Also Exploring Alternatives have worked hard and for years to gain the audience they have and to be trusted, they should put a bold disclaimer/comment on this video clearing this up. As far as the couple that made this video I wouldn't trust em as far as I could throw em if they can easily lie like this. Bold Faced Lie just to garner more views and in hopes of more subscribers, pathetic!
@mrtimothylee

jaymeez yeah, it just sucks because people who want to live in SF will think this is a feasible option, but it would not be possible at all. Then, when they actually come to SF, they will feel terribly mislead and dumbfounded. It is an alternative, but definitely not in the stated location 😕 and that is the part that is most upsetting.

Allison Cowan My sister visited San Francisco and while taking the bus had a conversation with a young man. (Yes, people still do communicate face to face). He lives over an hour drive outside the city because he cannot afford the rent. I think it is great that people can afford these tiny houses but where do you park it? Buying or renting land would be really expensive. These people were lucky to find a kind person paying it forward and still eventually the city found them. I don't doubt if found in the backyard where they are now, the city will want it regulated

The concept is great. I can't believe the negative comments from people posting here. When you tell people who aren't from California where you're from... you choose the nearest city. Non Californians don't know East Bay from LA. I'm from Puyallup but live in NY now. When people ask where I'm from I say Seattle which is 40 miles away from Puyallup. I'd bet most of the snobby comments about proximity to SF come from non- native Californians, because native Californians are usually really nice people.

SW If they were just interested in simplicity and proximity they would have stated Oakland in the title instead of San Francisco. Oakland is widely know and is closer to where they actually were parked but the strength of San Francisco as click bait was too overwhelming and they Chose To Lie! They are not good people. They are misleading people to think it’s possible to place a tiny home in SF and that is not the case.

We gave up my tiny $2,500 a month studio apartment in the Mission for a 3,000 sq ft home exactly one hour east of the city. We now own our house with 4 bedrooms, 3 baths and a 2 car garage. We have our own laundry room (goodbye laundrymats)! Sure we are not in the middle of the city anymore but to be honest, we enjoy the quiet where you can actually see the stars and hear crickets at night. Our house is so large we don't know what to do with 4 bedrooms but we have plenty of room for family and friends. The towns of Pittsburg, Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood have beautiful new homes for the $500K to $600K range. Our agent was Peter Lekas with Coldwell Banker.

Wonderful home & congrats on finding your way so early. You’re being great parents and partners. Don’t let anyone say you need to have separate beds. I attachment parented 3 sons-now 19, 22 & 27 Co-slept, breastfed on demand following child led weaning and our eldest was homeschooled 1st gr-when he left for UCSB. He is now finishing med school, middle graduates with a BSN and intends to be a nurse practitioner and the youngest is an aviation mech for the USMC ( side note: I say “I” but was with their father-were married 30years & had I gone minimal & Tiny EARLIER we would probably still be together). ONE QUESTION: I’m trying to fit my Tiny through a ten foot space and am wondering how big that opening is for the RV pad, did you back it in or did the company? This is semi urgent as my shell is being delivered to a friend’s backyard. One suggestion you might use down the road is to swap out some of the metal corrugated wall material with either opaque or clear (to which privacy can be added many ways. Your kids -years down the road-may ultimately enjoy rope ladders and or hammocks Thanks! I’m having the same issue regarding locating my THOW once I complete the inside (my friend will allow me to finish the inside but codes prohibit me living in her yard, so anyone reading this or if you have hints, I’m currently in MD but wanting to remain mobile yet join Tiny-friendly communities. My time for needing a place would be beginning May 2018.

Also, I’m currently living in a dark, damp, noisy & overpriced basement apt with only a tiny shower. Because of the mold, one of my cats got sick and has a mold allergy requiring regular baths and I use the same method with the addition on a small oval trash can so she can stand and hold on while she gets her dermatological treatments! It’s much more water efficient!

Hey I am proud to say as someone who grew up in the bay area and had to flee to Stockton to find affordable rent only to be on the verge of being priced out. I hope your ready for the recession coming bro. In 2008 I called it the yuppie purge. I guess this time around I'll call it the hipster purge. Back in 2008 you could see the tumbleweed blowing through the buildings. It was eeeerie. People en mass had jobs today and poor they were gone. I hope that tiny home has wheels. Last recession North Dakota's oil fields saved a lot of people. I'd look that direction as I feel a storm is coming.

What a beautiful home! I'm curious where in the Bay Area you are.. is it in the city of San Francisco or outside of it? Also, in my tiny house dreaming, I'm always curious about how difficult or easy it might be to find a place to park, and how costly that would be. Do you pay the house you're parked at rent? Curious how much? thanks so much as I would love to gather realistic ideas of what it might be like!

I'm guessing that parking prices vary quite a bit by city, and also from person to person since it's still a relatively new happening. I think they had quite a hard time finding places to park, especially for their first spot. It sounds like Jana had to do a lot of research and it definitely wasn't like finding an apartment on Craigslist. The Tiny House Family actually filmed a video about how they visited multiple spots to try and find a new parking place and I think they discussed costs in this one but I'm not 100% sure. Here's the link if you want to see it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXjYnoqYrbFgaJo

They said it multiple times but I'm 100% sure they are NOT in San Francisco. Maybe they are like some people who refer to every city in the Bay as San Francisco or more than likely it's click bait. Millions of people want to live in SF so if they use the SF in the title it probably would get more views than saying some other city name. I live and have spent my entire life in the Bay Area and that is not SF.

Hi there! We live just outside of San Francisco in a residential area near Walnut Creek. Before that, we floated around the East Bay while working in the city. Our first place was free, and now we pay about $400 per month to park in someone's backyard. The cost varies by where you look and where you are willing to go. Top end for a backyard setup would be about $700 or so to park and go down from there - much cheaper than an apt.

Yea man this is Click Bait 101. If they would have said another city name instead of San Francisco no one would click it. But hey their morals mean nothing to them as long as they can get more views and more subscribers. I'm referring to the couple in the video not Exploring Alternatives.

Great house lovely family thank you for another inspiring video why don't they put walls up to separate the loft space from the rest of the house? I am planing a slightly different project with my family but if this was my home I would probably put a wall up across 2/3 of the open loft space with a sliding door to completely separate the space. A married couple needs some grown up time💏

That's a great idea! I'm guessing they'll come up with some modifications when they're done co-sleeping with their son. The neat thing is that there are so many ways to do it and they've chosen to be more open concept but not everyone has to do that :) Thanks for watching!!!

They did it for Click Bait. If they stated any other city they wouldn’t get anywhere near the number of views and interested people inquiring. Despicable people in my opinion

this is not a "tiny house". it's an elaborate mobile home. nice, but it's misleading to refer to it as a house, which is generally considered to be a permanent structure anchored to one location. I spent a dozen years living in a trailer, 50'x10', and never once thought of it as a house. also, man bun and yoga pants? c'mon.

I just knew after the first minute of watching this video that the Bay Area folk were going to come into the comment section and say that this couple doesn't live in San Fran proper lol. However, I'm not sure why there are dozens of comments saying so. Either way, many parts of the East Bay are expensive to live in (or are getting that way due to gentrification), so they probably will end up saving a lot of money in the long run.

haute03 "Bay Area Folk" well maybe us Bay Area Folk just don't like being lied to. YOU may enjoy lies but I prefer the truth. If they live in Livermore or some other city then they should state that. Instead they stated SF because they knew the views will flood in because so many people aspire to live here. Imagine if someone purchased a tiny home and came to SF thinking there was any chance this would work in the city. It's flat out wrong! I don't blame the E.A. channel because I think they were duped by these new aspiring KZbinrs who are starved for attention, subscribers, and views.

jaymeez I hate to burst your bubble but I can't imagine anyone "aspiring" to live in SF. I live in a suburb of a big city but when I'm traveling and someone asks me where I live, I just tell them the name of the big city. Two reasons, 1) to protect my privacy, and 2) not too many people have ever heard of this suburb but they recognize the big city right away. Now I'm not lying, I am in the county of the big city, but I don't like to waste my, or their, time explaining where such and such is, when I can just say "X" and be done. The name of the video says "...Area" so that's good enough for me. Raining on these people's parade just ain't cool and makes you look like the back end of a horse. Good day.

long yarn "I can't imagine anyone aspiring to live in SF" well in your tiny bubble this may be true but when you step out into the big world you will find millions of people who aspire to live here. If these people were honest and still wanted to keep their privacy and not have to explain where exactly they live then the best route would have been to state "We live just outside of San Francisco" but they stated many times that they live "IN" SF so they are liars and by your comment so are you. 🖕

WOW! Really? Can you link to more information about this? I didn't know that had happened. I am looking to move into the area and greatly interested in a tiny house and doing something similar. But I worry about the HOA or the city saying that you can't just park your tiny house in someone's backyard without a permit or a lot of work.
