Living Big In A Tiny House

Living Big In A Tiny House

Күн бұрын

Built for only US$17,000 this young couple's incredible tiny house is packed with unique and interesting design elements. The entire build was carried out as a DIY project using mainly reclaimed materials, as the couple saved up for each new phase of the construction.
The couple decided to build a tiny house on wheels to give them freedom and more options for their future. Not knowing what city they were going to live in, or where they would need to travel for work once graduating, a house on wheels gave them the ability to simply hitch up their home and follow whatever opportunities presented themselves.

You have to be able to do more than tolerate each other if you're going to share such a small environment. That kind of chemistry is perhaps more important than having the money, desire, and skills to build such a home.

I just tried watching a tiny house program on netflix. The pace was frenetic and the quick camera cuts and zooms meant you couldn’t get a proper sense of the space and layout. It was awful and stress inducing to watch. The exact opposite of what Bryce and Rasa have achieved.

So many good things to say about this tiny house! 1. They have a bathtub. 2. The The budget - $17,000 is great. Finally! A tiny house that actually costs less than a normal-size house. 3. The couple in general - they just seem so positive with each other. And, I love her tattoos

A tub, wood stove, french doors, deep couch. All in a 20ft tiny house with Shou sugi ban siding. It's really cool how they built around the components that were important to them while sticking to a tiny house footprint & price. That really speaks to me. Thanks Bryce for another great episode. Well done!

Hey La! Absolutely, when it comes to small space designing I think you need to prioritise your needs and then ensure that those needs are taken care of in your build. If you pick out the things that are really important to you and make sure that they are included, then the space will work for you and you'll be happy in your home. This couple did a great job of that and their home is all the more special for it!

@livingbig
@livingbig 7 жыл бұрын
True on all fronts. You can build a beautiful and affordable tiny home for a small budget, but as with this couple it does mean doing the labour yourself and spending time sourcing affordable (usually reclaimed) materials. I especially like these projects as the owners generally are more connected to the build as their own labour went into creating it, and every plank of wood has a story.

They are the sweetest couple. Reminds me of us 28 years ago, we could do anything. I love the space, the cabin look, and how frugally they built it. I’ll save this one for inspiration. I wish the Host would always ask how they found the parking space and what they pay in lot fee. Because once you build, even with no Mortgage, that can be significant. I was recently disappointed to find parking at a local THOW community is $600/month. That’s what we now pay in rent.

Hi Bryce, there is 1 crucial issue that is never ever discussed in any tiny house videos - the issue of where do you actually put these houses??? Building/buying a portable tiny house may be cheap and a solution to the problem of housing affordability etc., but finding a place to put a tiny home is definitely NOT cheap and easy in any major city in Australia - there is nowhere affordable , other than a friend or family member's backyard , to put a tiny house and as most people work in a major city, parking a tiny house in the country is not viable. I really wish you would cover this issue in one of your future videos. Thanks, Magdalena

Magdalena French bingo! There are a ton of regulations regarding square footage, trailers, etc. Where I live, you can't find a plot in the mountains for under $30k and of course it is far from any major cities. They never address these factors and these are crucial to consider before dumping money into a tiny home that you may not even be able to place somewhere.

A shorter commute (the shorter the better, IMHO) equals an improved quality of life -- not to mention a smaller carbon footprint: fewer nonrenewable resources consumed, etc., etc., etc.. Most of us already spend far too much time at a 'job' -- how many more hours of your (very finite) life do you wish to spend sitting in a car?
@tanstaafl1960
@tanstaafl1960 6 жыл бұрын
Gray water is occasionally mentioned, but not the rest of the waste. Even a composting toilet needs to be emptied out once in a while. A standard flush toilet (even a modern low flow one) uses a lot of water, and you'd need a holding tank. At that point it's no different from an RV, with regular trips to a 'dump station' required.

Living Big In A Tiny House, I just read an article that you are based in New Zealand. I was just over there May 2016 designing sets that were built in Studio West right out side of Auckland for the film Project Eden Vol 1. We shot all over the North Island. Then traveled down to Wellington to talk on a panel at Armageddon. I want to get back there and make another film, it is such a beautiful friendly place. I think out of all the countries I've made films in the most beautiful are New Zealand and Ireland. It's awesome that you get to travel to other countries to shoot tiny homes. The variety of tiny homes that you have come across is so amazing. We are thinking of going tiny since we travel so much and every episode of Living Big in a Tiny House makes me want to do it even more.

Thanks Maggie. I really enjoy showcasing these homes that have a high content of reclaimed materials. The building industry is incredibly wasteful . Some estimates place around 40% of landfill waste as coming from the construction industry. With tiny homes, we have an opportunity to salvage much of this and repurpose it for incredible small homes such as this one. :)

I am obsessed with tiny house living!! I absolutely LOVE that they found a way to keep costs down!! By doing their own work and DIYing it they created a realistic budget, and Im so glad they were deatured here so others could get a feel on how to really save when downsizing!! 😌💗

This, by far, was one of my favorites. I like how they put so much thought in to the space and how happy they were. Also...this was one of the first places that didn't use a ladder. I like their choice of stairway/lift.

I love the way they laid the floor! In all the other tiny home videos I've seen, the floors are either laid out horizontally (making the space seem longer) or vertically (making the space seem wider), but at an angle, like they did it, I think kind of made the space appear wider and longer at the same time but also added a lovely artistic and homey feel to the space. I think this is one of my favorite tiny house designs as well. I could totally see living in one like this.

Omg, STUNNING!!! That wood kitchen👌🏻! And at 62, short w/arthritis, l truly appreciate the stairs over a ladder. The doors & all the reclaimed various woods are so beautiful. The bathroom sink is gorgeous, WHAT a beautiful & thoughtful use of a wedding gift. Better than another set of knives or coffee maker! Even a work/guest loft. These kids thought of EVERYTHING, absolutely awesome design!👍🏻👏🏻🏆 And such a sweet young couple starting out. I wish you all the best in the many happy years to come!!🐾🌈☮️🇨🇦

That isn't allowed in every neighborhood. Tiny houses need their OWN neighborhoods. That involves petitioning zoning boards and planning ahead. People complaining that there is no place to park need to buy land and get zoning to MAKE neighborhoods.

Great price, lots of character and super cozy. They did well fitting so much in in a 20ft trailer too, I've seen some much larger but yet had let living space. Thanks for the tour! Not sure if you're still in the US or where your travels are taking you, but if you're heading near Tuscon AZ you should try to check out Derek & Hannah's tiny, I think you'd love their place. They filmed the whole building process on their channel (Life inside a Box), and have a great off-grid setup.
