We returned from Hawaii to find frozen instant propane water heater-- eek! Time for emergency tiny house winterizing. Fortunately, we were able to thaw it out just in time to move to a new backyard parking spot. ❄️ We show how we set-up our tiny house utilities and winterize our water system in preparation for snowy eastern central Oregon.

First....you should have a Tiny House Expedition sign on the side of your home. When you’re driving down the road all the gawkers can see who you are. I would be one of the gawkers. Second.... great job at winterizing. We use to do this to the old well pit on the farm. Had to heat the outside faucets so we could water the livestock.

Dude, that wrapping of the heat strip and pipe is sloppy, why expose all the fiberglass - only get in the air that you and all breath - neatly, the outer aluminum coated paper will completely cover and seal the fiberglass. Birds are going to peck on it for nesting material. Otherwise nice seeing the actual application of your water system. Thanks pal

Just for reference, hot water will freeze faster than cold water. I know that sounds rediculous, but it's true. The increased temperature of the water is the molecules moving around more. More moving around is increased collisions between the molecules and more collisions is more cold transfer. Easy proof is to take two ice cube trays fill one with cold water and the other with hot water and place them in your freezer. Check on them frequently, the hot one will freeze into cubes first. I know this sounds like random fact spouting to sound knowledgeable, but I mean it to advise against using the flush of hot water to try and prevent freezing at night. If the water in your drains is at risk of freezing, adding a flush of hot water won't 'help' as much as increase the risk of freezing.

Hot water freezes faster because it turns into steam and absorbs energy to phase change. This doesn't happen in a closed off pressurized system.

this is such a misconception. Yes.. there is an effect called the Mpemba effect, where under IDEAL conditions hot water can freeze faster than cold water but it's only for certain temperatures/quantities and conditions. By enlarge cold water freezes faster.

@@tkx7 I did say in some cases. Also you will have to pardon me I haven't listened to the blog in a year. However I believe I was mostly thinking of scenarios where the pipe is already clogged or partially blocked and the hot water lacked sufficient thermal engergy to melt it. Hot water sent down a pipe that runs into an existing cold blockage sounds an awful lot like putting hot ice cubes into the freezer to me. Not to mention water and ice can only exist together at 32 F so both modes will attempt to reach that temperature as quickly as possible. The best way to keep drain pipes from freezing closed is to keep them clear and dry. If we were talking about my drains I would want better plans to avoid freezing than just dumping hot water down and hoping for the best. Even if it had to be heat tape on a switch and checking the outlet before using the pipe.
