Tiny tent camping - My 22l backpack wild camp setup

In this video I head out wild camping in the UK (Peak District) with my new tiny tent and a full wild camping setup fitting everything inside my Osprey Talon 22l backpack. This is the smallest setup I've used before and learned a few things about my backpacking gear along the way.

Great to see your experiences with this tent. I have a less expensive micro tent like this and its great, BUT it has very specific use-cases, and there are a lot of pros and cons. It took me a while to realise that these things are luxurious bivvy bags, and not true "tents" in the traditional sense. You have no room for personal admin unless you are a black belt in yoga. Nearly all of your kit is going to be outside, exposed to the elements Its super light, has a tiny foot print, and takes up very little space in your pack. It is VERY warm and sturdy due to its small form factor and small internal volume. Its basically a double-walled coffin, with all the benefits and costs associated with that. If I was going on a cross-country hike, where weight was a premium, and temps were going to be below freezing, this would be my weapon of choice. (tiny tents are incredibly heat efficient and snug). But for many situations these kinds of micro tents can be problematic, particularly in rain, and especially if you are not on the move. I tried one of these out in the Scottish Highlands where it rained like monsoon season... and it wasnt pretty. You have to get out to change into dry clothes if you are not a contortionist. All your kit gets constantly rained on unless you pull it under the outer.... which practically suffocates you because there is not much "outer" .... The only space you have for personal admin is JUST enough for looking at dirty pictures on the internet, and searching around for that thing you dropped earlier.... Its miserable. Seriously.... its miserable when you are soaking wet, and you waited for the rain to stop... the rain didnt stop... so you have to get out in your pants, in the rain, to change into your "dry" clothes. Personally I would trade +1kg in weight for the sake of having a tent big enough to get changed, dry clothes, sit up, and brush my teeth in a vertical position where spitting might end up with me gobbing on my own pillow. But thats just me

That tent at 500g is incredible. I think I'd feel claustrophobic in it personally (and I am not a tall or large man), but 500g is 500g. My backpack is 40L and I struggled to get everything I needed into it on my first solo wild camping trip. I think my sleeping bag was the main bit of bulk, and I was much too warm in it, even on the fells and wearing just my boxers to sleep. Biggest weight was my tent at around 2.5 kg, but that's a decent step down from the ~4.2 kg tent I used previously, and will probably continue to use for festivals as there's nothing wrong with it structurally, it's just big and heavy.

Great video. I have also recently done this, not quiet to the extreme of a 22l, but I have downsized to a 40l and can get all of my stuff in comfortably. My Nature Hike Star river 2 ONLY just fits with the poles, but everything else fits well. I much prefer it, it’s also made me only take the necessities, instead of taking stuff along that I won’t use. I have noticed that I actually enjoy the walk more and forget I have something on my back, rather than having a 70l jammed to the rafters with stuff I may or may not use.

Definitely a starlink train. They launch from Florida, and shortly after deployment you can see them lined up as they are all launched in succession. After a while they spread out in the orbit, becoming less bunched, and so are less noticeable. Each orbit takes about 80-90 mins, but by the time they come round again, the Earth has rotated, and so you probably won’t see them, To see satellites, the satellite needs to be in sunshine, and your sky needs to be dark - so you see them after sunset and before sunrise. I you get an app like starwalk, you can find many satellites (not just starlink). Starwalk will show you what is in your sky, but it will show you things that might be telescope only (depending on your settings). Also, as I say, the satellite needs to be in daylight! 29th august at 5:23-5:32 am, for example, you can see the ISS from the peak district, and again on 30th 4:37-4:45 am … via ISS spotter app. (in the first one, it becomes visible 920 miles on bearing of 245, 5:23:50, then is highest on bearing 190, elevation 55 degrees, at 5:26:50 - 320 miles away…. And then disappears at 5:32:30 on a bearing of 85 degrees, 1470 miles away (as numbers are location dependent, everything is rounded, based on a random location in the peaks)

That tent reminds me of a little tent I had back in 1985 called a peapod (cant remember the manufacturer)which I took to glastonbury. It was a lot heavier at 2 .5 pounds but was front opening with a porch for gear. £145 back in the day which was bloody expensive. Bought really for a tour of europe which never happened. I still use the eurohike frame rucksack I bought at the same time only last week and its still going strong.

How things have changed since i first went camping in an ex army tent more than Fifty years ago. Can still remember the smell of canvas , wet grass and bacon frying. Wonderful memories.

I carry a RAB sill ponco. If you have your hiking poles, you could make a decent porch awning. Just peg the poncho on the far side of the tent, then prop it on the door side with the hiking poles and some guy lines.

I'd be tempted to replace the hooks on the inner with something like geiter hooks so that the inner can be dropped giving that little bit more room. I do this with my tent and find that any condensation evaporates much faster in the morning. Just a thought

I love experimenting with how little I need to take on my bikepacking adventures. No trouble getting my MSR Hubba NX and all kit in a 33L set up, it would probably go in 22L if I left my watercolour sketch set at home, or took my Nordisk Telemark 1 tent. I like my Talon as my day hike pack. It's packed with a small quilt, a tarp, a bivvy bag, a poncho tarp (that one from DD) and usually some form of warm sleeves. I keep a couple bungees, pegs and some sanitary stuff just in case in the wee top pouch. I love it!

I do similar, knuckles in boots, but I also use a folding foam sitmat I'll place my knees on before I'm sufficiently away before attempting to stand. The sitmat I place under my sleeping bag at the pressure point, usually where I'd be doing any sitting up. You can also use a Tyvek cut to shape groundsheet, cut to be inside your vestibule but not outside the fly to give your cooking area and knee area.

I bought the Vango Neon UL1 this year, in preference to a bivy, from some bikepacking. It didn't work for me. But I'd 100% use a tiny tent over a bivy so looking forward to seeing some more 👍

Did this myself a month or so ago to see if it could be done. Managed to get all my kit for a bivvy (alpkit hunka xl) and tarp (dd superlite 3m x 2.9m) set up in my 18l pack (lowe alpine aeon). Just like you it was packed to bursting point. Didn't use the tarp in the end, just the bivvy between some rocks. Concluded taking the same set up but in my 30l montane trailblazer would be preferable as there's a bit more space for more food if nothing else, and it's actually a lighter bag as well.

Last time was on a beach in West Wales, although you do have to watch the weather when going that exposed, it's definitely worth it for the experience though.

Can’t believe it. Seams we always buy the same gear at the same time. Although not exactly the same mine is a nordisk loften ul1. Took mine on the Cumbria way few weeks back. Tight inside for being 6ft, could get changed in it though. It is that middle ground between a bivy and normal tunnel tent.👍

When I saw the star link satellites in the lake District they were very spaced out, not in a row like in your footage. When I tried the posh pork and beans I gave it my daughter, I thought it was disgusting, the pork looks like those dried pigs ears you give dogs as a treat 🤣 I've got a helium 100, but even that's too small for me these days, I need space now I'm getting older lol. I'm a big fan of Vango's Project Hydrogen tent with the inflatable main pole. It's in the same weight and pack size range as this one but has much more height to sit up in. You do have to bring a mini-pump with you for the main pole as it's designed for bike packers. Still works well for hiking though. (at a pinch you could inflate it with it's stuff sack but it's easier with a mini-pump.) Love to see you review if you could borrow one Paul.

I wish I had seen a video like this when I bought a (cheap) tiny tent upon returning to motorbiking. I set the tent up in my livingroom and only then realised that in the,, unlikely event I ever managed to get down and into it I would have absolutely no chance at all of getting my middle-aged, lardy arse back out and up the following morning. It was an impressive piece of kit though and life would have been easier and better had it existed 30 years ago.

just came across your vids yesterday, this is second vid ive watched of yours as im in the market for a small lightweight 1 man tent for my bike packing, tent i use atm is 1.7kg so want something much more lighter/smaller, i was looking at the MSR FreeLite 1 Person Tent, which is around 200g heavier than this, but this one seems brilliant for the pack size etc! so now im undecided!? The only problem was German campers kept tripping over it at night on their way back to their luxury tents/ camper vans where they would sit around a coffee table behind a picture windowed tent and watch mad Brits cooking bangers and beans outside in all weathers.

Great tent for a stealth camp.However you can get a roomy durstan mid pro 1 weighs about 550 grams not much in the price and loads of room. Incredible but not very stealthy if that’s what you are after. Really enjoyed the video and the different tents thanks 😊

Hi Paul I’ve thinking of giving wild camping a go I’ve watched allot of vids I was thinking of buying the Night cat 1 tent because I’m on a tight budget. Or saving up bit longer and buying helmet compact 1 if I can find it on a sale somewhere. But I’ve got a bit of a bad back so don’t want kit to get to heavy whilst trying to keep it cheap set up. I have no idea of what size pack I’ll need etc ie camping rucksack etc. if you good give me tips etc that would be great or maybe link me etc or make budget man’s camping vid that would be great. Thank you so much I luv your vids ps weight of the set up isn’t to much of a problem has I’m on a tight budget, but I don’t want to be hikeing with a bag of cement on my back lol goodluck bye
