Thank you to everyone who bought me a virtual coffee last week. I love helping people learn about fibre arts... I also have to pay the bills! You had asked for us to add our wheels to the list of wheels that can be arranged to run a single onto the bobbin. I don't know if any commenters have mentioned the Ashford Kiwi 3. However, I have one, and I was able to figure out how to make it work so only the bobbin spun. I ran the drive band over the back of the bobbin, and the rest of the drive band ran on the middle groove of the wheel. I tried it around the smallest wheel groove, which was closer to the bobbin, but it was slipping off, so too loose. The Kiwi 3 is set up so that the back of the bobbin and the wheel are "almost" on top of each other, so no real danger of damage to my wheel. Thank you so much for sharing this video!

Thank you!! I managed to do it with an Ashford Kiwi 3 which is a Scotch tension.

That Herring Wheel is really neat. I want one. I love the design. Nice piece of functional furniture. Also a visual piece of art work.

A quick preface as to why and when you would rewind a bobbin would have been helpful to me. When I figure that out, I’ll rewatch!

Hi Diedra, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately the ‘quick’ preface would have been as long as the video itself since there are so many potential reasons. As mentioned, that’s all in the previous video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKvMpISnd5uVhtk Hope that’s useful.

Oh yeah! I do this all the time. I use this technique to count my yarn and wind it on then take another bobbin and wind off half to that bobbin then use those two bobbins to ply with onto my other bobbin and I already know how much I will have when done and I don't need to count when done. All my wheels will allow me to do this. Figured this out years ago.

Loved the itty-bitty violin :)). I have a Kiwi 3, and I usually just stick a dowel with duct tape at one end into the orifice, put an empty bobbin on it with a binder clip over the dowel in front of it to hold it in place, and treadle away. Not quite as easy as on an Irish tension or DD, but pretty simple and works well enough. :)

Hi. I'm very interested to see a pic of that as I have the same wheel.

I have this wheel too, I wondered if it would be too much stress on the brake to tighten so that it does not twist as your treadle. I've done it a couple of times (!) and just worry about the spring on the brake knob-tension system wearing out too fast. @tinyfibrestudio- I would love any thoughts you have on that!

You can use a ashford Traditional to rewind yarn. Take the maiden off and then use a round chop stick or something similar to put through the bobbin and then attach the drive band to the bobbin.

I have a double band wheel and frequently use it for winding bobbins before plying. Good video👍.

I just had a quick look at my Kiwi 2. I think it could work if I had a slightly looser drive band than the poly one it comes with.

I haven't tried this yet, but I have a Lendrum DT scotch tension wheel and I was thinking about taking the flyer off and using a 5.5mm straight knitting needle as a shaft so that the bobbin will be better aligned with the wheel....I will be careful!

I think you are about the best spinning teach out there! When we rewind a bobbin, does it then make the yarn twist in a different direction? So if we spun 'z' then rewind, is the yarn still spun 'z' and can then be plied "S"? or it is now 'S' spun and needs to be plied "Z"?
@TinyFibreStudio

❤️ Thank you for the huge compliment! Great question. The twist remains in the same direction so you don’t need to change anything about your plying. This fact messed with my head when I first started spinning but if you write a ‘Z’ or ‘S’ on a piece of paper and turn it upside down, the diagonal remains in the same direction.
