I decided, like you, to cheat on my quilt backs. I have YET to make a quilt for real, but I decided making a 'faux' quilt would work-using either flat sheets, or low loft comforters from goodwill. The top of the quilt will be hand made, and I've yet to discover if using a comforter in this way would work. I plan to just treat it as batting, and the back will already be done. Do you think this will work?

Found this video just in time. Making two log cabin quilts, one for me and one for my sister. Started one by measuring and cutting strips. Gave me a headache. Then i kept mixing up strips. Ugh! Then i put it aside and tried your method on the second one. Awesome tips! It is turning out really nice. And i am enjoying it! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!

Great video. Haven't seen any clear instructions like this before. Love how you used a sheet on the back. It kinda gave quilters permission to use a sheet despite the constant argument between quilt snobs who say no way and the rest of us. I've used a sheet before and loved it. It really has held up better than the front of the quilt.

Thanks! And I use sheets allll the time. I think they are great for everyday quilts that get a ton of use. My quilts get washed like crazy and they hold up so well!

I use sheets all the time! I fact I’m always looking for them at Thrift stores since they’re a lot cheaper. Saves a ton of money and there’s no piecing. What’s not to love about that? 🙂

I JUST LOVE YOU!!! I love your style of teaching... I made my first quilt top at 8. My mother wouldn't play with me and wouldssy "go entertain yoursrlf!!" So I did. I first made 8 pointed stars. The second was a Lincoln log with red and white ginhams 1",1/2", 1/4" and then a solid red piece. This log cabin that you made today reminded me of my quilt.

I will have to watch how you compensated for the seam again; before that I would have either said "no" to the pattern or tried some creative cutting or un-piecing with poor results.

Fantastic! I made one for my daughter. Virtually no measuring. Starching and squaring up using the seams were excellent tips! I got my colors all out of order which is a bummer, but it just looks scrappy. Put a solid yellow block in the center. Ready to bind. Completed in a weekend.

Have you ever tried the vodka and water mixture to make your own spray starch. You can dilute it to make it not heavy or add more vodka to make heavy starch. You can also drop a little oil scent to scent your starch also

Good tutorial. Have used from 3/4 inch to about 3 1/2 inch strips. Not sure I would go 5 1/2. Maybe only 4 blocks and get a bigger top done. Have to think about this.

I made a huge mistake and cut a ton at 5 inches, instead of 5 1/2. Start again with new fabric, or will 5 inches work?

5” will totally work! Just keep going-your strips will just end up at 4 1/2” instead of 5. No big deal at all :)
