Tip: Endoscopic Camera Fun! (and Pre-viz)

Today I look at some filmmaking applications for an unusual device: a USB endoscopic camera.

I bought one of the cheap endoscopes on amazon. It was apparently defective. The lights took up 75% of the frame, so I returned it. Cool idea, though. I just had poached eggs for breakfast, cooked in my new egg steamer. I've also been steaming cod for dinner a lot, lately. Trying to eat better.

The guys over Corridor Digital once used a GoPro session to shoot an ice cube's POV. You could work on the same idea, creating a fake/prop esophagus inside a PVC pipe, and sliding this camera inside it. Or you could do a horror movie. Facehugger POV!!!

I got a really cool Macro Extension tube from Fotodiox for about $11. You can use it with the camera and lens you already have and get super cool macro shots similar to these. Obviously that can't fit in tiny spaces, but useful for many applications

I didn't know what to do with it but mine came with the ability to set focus through the rotation of the lens, and it's like a telephoto lens (similar to about 200mm lens) once it is properly set. It cost a little more from eBay and I plan to use it as a security cam for distant view.

You DO NOT want to hear my ideas on where to put this. xD Anyways, great tip! I'd also like to point out that there are some relatively (though not as much) cheap USB microscopes on eBay... won't have as much possibilities as this one, but they are basically endocopic cameras much like this one, but with extremely short range focus (you have to almost be touching whatever you are trying to capture) and a set of lenses to amplify the image. I just got it to check electronic boards really up close, since components have gotten ridiculously tiny these days. Have a couple or more stuff here that just stopped working, wanted to see if it I could find the problem myself. Anyways, great to see a new video Scott!

I can see a really bad (think 8mm film) mini figurine based short film being made with one of these. In fact it would be a great tool to use when applying the hints and tips from your film making how to series.

I got one with a micro USB plugs to go into a smartphone or tablet. You can get them several meters long and the lights are dimmable. One possible use is to view the camera screen when the camera is on a boom if the camera doesn't have HDMI output. Rubbish image quality but possibly good enough to see where the camera is pointing (admittedly a rather desperate measure).

IDK, maybe something to do with animals, as in, putting it on a cat and see what happens when that cat greets another. OR putting it on a walnut that you've glued to the tree and see what happens when a squirrel tries to glom it.

maybe you can find a way to capture something similar to the 007 opening scene filming a subject or target from inside a firearm barrel. The camera focus is short and this means the rifling is on focus but the subect won't be, except you apply some sort of lens just outside the barrel(and the camera won't see it). maybe the subject image will result upside down but who cares? just rotate the image with software or rotate the camera/barrel)

Thanks for the video. Spend too much for the camera and your adult brain will kick in and say, "I have a professional camera, I need to act like a totally boring Boomer!" Buy a $5.00 piece of crap, and the only use for the thing is to let your inner wacky kid out to play. I say, break out the toys, props and freaky/cheesy sound effects and let go. Throw in some POV shots from a 1990's VHS camcorder and you got yourself the makings of a $20.00 or bust, "FRUGAL SHORT MOVIE CHALLENGE!"
