Thanks again. You are the epitome of a mandolin teacher. I'm glad you're out there. Otherwise I'd just be using my Kentucky as a wall mount. Thank you from Paul in Michigan.

That looks like a good exercise and a clever way to get your left hand into the optimum position. Just now I can't make that stretch on the G string, but I can on the E string. I'm thinking that a good approach to this exercise would be to start by taking it up the fretboard where the span of six frets is shorter. For example, start with the index finger at the 5th fret and then reach up to the 10th fret.

I play with my fingers almost pointing outwards. Any tips on how I might change that and develop better technique?

have you got any tips for someone with a very small hand? (as in, if I squeeze my fingers together I only cover two frets, and the neck is half my palm width.) When I try to follow the first exercise, I have to twist my hand to be able to cover that many frets, so the pointer and pinky sort of...almost face each other. To get all the fingers pointing in the same direction, I can only do the exercise to the fifth fret.

Thats great if you have large hands. I have small hands with arthritis, so it's nearly impossible. I'll have to settle for less.

I have been playing mandolin for a long time I recently bought a new pear shaped one. It drives me crazy to have to have my strap on the head. Please tell me what your strap thing is called.

Hold it. You said put your left hand in the right spot. You meant “correct” spot did you not? To get the most from your lessons for we left handers please give up on right and wrong…. Say correct and incorrect.
