you shouldn't pinch the insulation. it creates a high resistance point (hot spot)

looked like the insulation was under the screw.

how would you go about connecting multiple wires to the same connection there? I have about 4-5 wires, 18awg going to one connection. Whats a clean proper way of combining them and then connecting?

One wire per crimp lug. 4 lugs per terminal max with the smallest on top. As for being a cowboy (using forks or bare wire)... calculate the area of the conductor and then select the connector. 18 AWG=0.75 mm². 5x0.75=3.75 mm². AWG12 is the closest @4 mm² so use a 12-14 AWG crimp on ring terminal. Don't use a 10-12 as it is on the high side. A 12-14 will work on 2.5 to 4 mm².
