Tipping the Scale: The Science Behind Pleasure and Pain #addiction #dopamine #addiction #mentalhealth
The brain processes pleasure and pain through overlapping neural circuits and neurotransmitter systems. Both experiences are complex and involve various regions of the brain, including the limbic system, which is often associated with emotions and motivation.
Pleasure, often linked to reward, is primarily processed through the brain's reward pathway, which includes structures like the nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area, and prefrontal cortex. These areas are involved in processing dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reinforcement learning.
Interestingly, the brain's response to pain can also involve activation of the reward pathway. This may seem counterintuitive, but it reflects the brain's attempt to mitigate pain and promote survival. For example, when someone experiences relief from pain, such as through the use of painkillers, the brain's reward pathway can be activated, leading to feelings of pleasure or relief
Why ‘inside serene’? The idea of ‘inside’ is to navigate and dig deeper into what can human change to accumulate serendipity of thoughts that will help us mentally sync to a healthier, better and more in control of our thoughts.
Being mentally fit means having the skills to handle stress, think clearly and make good decisions, communicate effectively, and regulate one's emotions in appropriate ways.
Let us join together on how to become responsible and highly engaged in building a community of good people. There are many ways to improve and maintain mental fitness, such as getting regular exercise, practising mindfulness, and seeking support from others. Inside Serene's goal is to build a community of mental support regardless of your colour or religion. We are ONE!
Practising self-care and self-love enables us to give back and love others. I need your support to clean our social environment of toxic people and become a more responsible content creator.
The power of words to control our emotions can be therapeutic to our mental health;
✅ “I'm here for you.”
✅ “You are not alone.”
✅ “You are worthy and deserving.”
✅ “You don't have to apologize.”
✅ “There is treatment available to you…”
✅ “You are strong!.”
" We must be willing to encounter darkness and despair when they come up and face them, over and over again if need be, without running away or numbing ourselves in the thousands of ways we conjure up to avoid the unavoidable". - By Jon Kabat-Zinn

I just ended a 24 yr marriage to someone with an addiction to many things. In my healing I’m just understanding how many addictions he had. Our end would be his use of metabolic steroids, gym adoration, social media & porn. The steroids made this dopamine situation worse. I continue to educate myself for a clearer understanding. Ty for this content. We had many yrs of relapse/recovery. I wish him the best I finally realized this was no way for me to live my third act of my life. I’m grateful I saw it was time to make a change.

Who's going to prevent suicide for the first four weeks? If she was my Dr I'd be dead in a couple of days.

A great example of a highly educated individual making addiction WAY too complex. I don't think she fully understands addiction from a personal perspective--just pure science--which helps very few people. Nice effort, but she falls short. She should stick to psychology and stay out of addiction.

What had she gotten wrong, specifically?

@@you_dont_wanna_know1969 her understanding and explanation of addiction is too clinical and confusing. Too, too clinical. I'd be curious as to past and if she's experienced any addiction of her own. I'm about simplifying addiction, not making it more confusing. She might operate from the perspective that addiction is a disease or inherited genetic disorder, which it is NOT. So she would have that wrong as well if this is true. Just because she has a PhD from Stanford doesn't mean she KNOWS about addiction. She DOES know what "science" tells us, and we need not look any further than covid to realize how wrong science can be.
