History :Though little is known about its early history, the Palakkad Fort is thought to have existed from very ancient times and was built in its current configuration about 1766 A.D. Before the start of the eighteenth century, the local monarch, Palakkad Achchan, had gained independence from the Zamorins. He despatched a deputation to Hyder Ali in 1757 to ask for assistance in fending off a Zamorin invasion. Palghat was a strategically significant site that Hyder Ali took advantage of, and from that point until 1790, the fort was continuously held by either the British or the Mysore Sultans.Later, the warriors of the Zamorin captured it. Finally, under Colonel Stuart's leadership, the British took it in 1790. After being repaired, it served as the operational base for the operations that culminated in Srirangapatnam's storming. The garrison of the fort remained in place until the mid-1800s.
