Inability to obtain good sleep is a common problem. In this video the surgeons discuss eight ways that you can try to improve your sleep. The information they discuss is based on recent scientific evidence and discussion with a sleep expert. They discuss sleeping in a dark, quiet, cool room. They discuss avoiding alcohol and caffeine, sleeping alone, avoiding devices and using a CPAP machine if required. Medication is also an option to reduce stress prior to sleep.

Thanks for all of this information! 70 year old lady here. My list for myself includes the cool room, melatonin, sleep in a different room than spouse (this was started years ago when I had a cold; we discovered that we both slept so much better that we never went back to sleeping together), eliminating ambient light, no caffeine after 1 PM, and no electronic devices an hour before bedtime.

I have a dog that tries to hog the bed. But eventually he moves on to his bed. What if you have blue blockers on your lenses of your glasses.

This is near and dear to my heart. In the past I worked shift work and had to learn to cope. A floor fan in the room helps the room feel cooler but also provides a steady drone which helps mask sounds. If the room is quite warm, placing the fan up on something to blow the air across one's feet can really help to cool you down. Light blocking shades were a must for me and worked well. I learned to use soft foam ear plugs to take care of noise, including a spouse who snores, as well as my own snoring. I've been using soft foam ear plugs for 30 years and always get better sleep when I use them. Didn't need to sleep alone after buying a king size bed, plenty of room, plus the ear plugs equals a good night sleep. I have a small amount of wine twice a week but always 4 hrs or more prior to bedtime. No caffeine for 10 hours prior to sleep for me. Found that on a sleep specialists website, however, some people do not need the 10 hours lead time prior to sleep. Finally, no dang blasted TV, especially the news, prior to or during bedtime. Great video! Thanks.

Ya shift work is very hard, I did it once at 16 yrs of age at the airport, never again as it made me quite ill and not knowing what to do with 7 a.m. sun rising after shift ended, watch the ear plugs though, a nurse told me they block the flow....

I absolutely agree that sleeping alone is better for sleep. The movements and snoring keep me waking up. I like cool, dark, quiet room, alone. One exception is that I fall asleep listening to Amazonian rainstorm. Soothing rain falling on leaves and soft thunder. I set it for one hour ( Portal offers it as a free audio ).

Excellent suggestions! Another thing I do is this: Sleeping on your side with your head tilted slightly back, almost like you are receiving mouth to mouth resuscitation though with your mouth closed (again, NOT on your back; a contoured pillow helps here). This can open up your airways and make sleep easier. Just make sure you don’t overdue it because that can strain your neck. That works for me, anyway. Results may vary with others, because I’m weird. 🤪

You guys are great. I cannot tell you how many people I have told about these '2 Canadian docs on YT' since I embarked on my total knee replacement journey. I am 7 weeks post op. My ROM is 0-127. I graduated from clinical PT last week (6 weeks total) and my surgeon told me last Friday that he would see me in a year unless I needed him sooner. Thanks for all the informative videos. Your humor is appreciated and needed when dealing with knee replacement surgery. My surgeon was incredible and my physical therapists were exceptional. During therapy I groaned a lot, laughed a lot and worked hard. Laughter is cathartic. Keep the videos coming.Have a great day.

I was 37 when I quit smoking. Up to that point it usually took me 20 minutes to 1/2 hour to fall asleep. After I quit smoking, it now took me about 3 minutes to reach sleep. For the last 24 years I've quit drinking alcohol. During that time that 3 minutes has been shortened to about 1 minute or less. Unfortunately, being an older man. I wake up a couple of times to hit the washroom, but that one minute to fall asleep again is fairly regular. Stay safe & thanks Brian 81

I am 64 years old and I can tell you this, in that time, I had ONE morning that I woke up and felt completely rested, full of energy and clarity. Almost a feeling of elation. I felt like I could accomplish anytrhing. The only explanation I have is that I was having a lucid dream just before I awoke. I have practiced trying to replicate lucid dreaming to see if that was the reason, but without luck. Most people I tell this story to, look at me like I am a loon but I remember that day, I will never forget it and if I could wake with that feeling just several times a week, I feel my life would have been much different.

As someone who teaches sleep hygiene, one of the most important things that will ensure quality, restful, restorative sleep is a consistent sleep schedule: going to bed and waking at the same time 7 days a week - and not deviating by more than 30 minutes or so. Incorporating all of your suggestions with a sleep schedule will be life-changing. I began practicing sleep hygiene in 2010, and by 2011 I no longer required an alarm. I still set one, but always awake before it goes off. Also, if noise is an issue (too much) there are a variety of soft, comfortable earplugs that will mute noises, but still allow you to hear crying children, pets who need attention, or phones and alarms.

When I got sick some years ago, I moved to our "sick bay" bedroom so my husband wouldn't have to sleep in a cough cloud. Also, we are now in the age group that has awful trouble getting back to sleep if awakened during the night, so after a lot of backing and forthing with this idea, we decided separate sleeping arrangements do work for us. Sure helps with our different amounts of needed sleep-time that have evolved as well; my husband goes to bed much later and gets up much earlier than I do. Now he doesn't wake me up thrice--got to add his nocturnal potty break.

Please do an entire video on the science of sleep apnea. I denied having this issue until I was 70 and had an in lab test. I have been using CPAP for 6 months now and it has dramatically improved my life. I does take a lot to get used to and find the correct setting. I don't know what it's like up north but here in the States the sleep docs that will keep working with the patient seem hard to find. Myself, being an annoying engineer, I dug in to all the info and KZbin videos I could find to dial it in. I just had 10 hours of amazing sleep!

From MIT, susan Erdman did a talk on KZbin about lactobacillis reuteri Greek yogurt. Mostly the premise of consuming this yogurt was for weight loss, but side effects were, better skin, hair growth, and better sleep. I'm on my third week of the yogurt and my skin has indeed improved, but mostly I definitely do sleep better. I'm old and bald so the hair growth benefit is probably a no-go but I will hang in there for the recommended 5 months for that benefit. Better sleep is real though, and for my daughter too whom is also eating the yogurt. Another great talk, thank you! Stephen

I am 72 years old, fall asleep very fast however only sleep between 6 and 6.5 hours per night. Have a nap every afternoon. I dream every night and at nap time. I dont drink alcohol, i take no caffeine after 1200 pm. Over weight by 15 pounds. Have no prescription meds. Walk 3 to 6 km most days, do some gentle strength training 3 times per week. I try everything that is recommended but I would just love to sleep 8 hours every night and not have to nap. The very few times this happens i wake up feeling so much better. Part of my problem is when i wake up at 430, i am happy and excited to start the day. Then by noon i start losing my energy. My husband and I dont have much stress, we are very lucky in our lives. I just wish i could get a better sleep routine. I take magnesium citrate for muscle cramps, but have not tried melatonin. I keep wondering if that might be the missing link for a great sleep for me.

I have had sleep apnea. It is terrifying to start with but when you know what it is it is not as bad. For me it was a side effect of medication I have to take but I got accustomed then it went away. Another one nearly as bad is Manniers Disease, a form of Vertigo where you think you are losing your mind and are going to pass out when you roll over on the pillow. That passes with time too. Food is related to sleep too. Warm milk and bananas promote sleep. Apples wake you up. Over heating during sleep gives nightmares.

I agree with a cool room, a dark room, please no caffeine 4-6 hours before bed, no noise or a noise machine, I think sleeping with your partner can be a good thing, actually I would alternate between sleeping alone and sleeping with your partner, buy blue light blockers so you can look at your phone before bedtime and meditation. Meditation can be done successfully different ways and clear your mind out.

I noticed my husband had periods of apnea.....30 seconds. Newer couple. Made me blink too. So, I made him see his doctor. They weren't going to give him the machine because the test they gave him was inconclusive. Trust me he now has the machine. 30 seconds. Watching your spouse not breathe for that long was not fun. His stomach issues that he had for years are gone. So many health issues cleared up it was amazing. No more snoring except the quick nap around nine thirty while watching TV. Definitely changed our lives.

I recommend a king bed as a potential option for the "sleeping alone" option, assuming there is room in the bedroom for it. I also recommend mentally shutting down at least a half hour before bedtime. Beyond the video's recommendation of no TV, computer or cellphone, sit back and listen to some soft music or some polite conversation on a radio. It should be conversation with a topic that the would-be sleeper has no interest in.

I have very restless legs and move around an enormous amount both when I am asleep or trying to get to sleep. My movements can be very swift and sometimes I kick my legs incessantly. Sleeptime for me is between 11pm and 12pm at night. Generally my feet cannot be covered as its too uncomfortable. I toss and turn a lot, which sometimes I am not aware of. I often wake up completely at 4 or 5 am and I get up walk around the house, talk to people, come up with ideas or questions, or I go watch television or read a book or get on my phone or computer. I'm very active even during my sleep time, and I can dream these epic dreams in which a lot happens in them, some are amazing long sagas that I reminise over when awake and a few involve some threat aspect, like snakes or big cats. I don't wake up tired in the morning, and I feel I get a lot of sleep. I get at least 8 hours a night if not more, but there is a break for an hour or more from 4 to 5 am to about 6 am as the sun rises. Then I fall back asleep again into a very deep sleep for another hour or two. I was told I have a hyperactive nervous system so no caffeine after midday. I take magnesium fizzy tablets, a half dose if my legs are really getting busy, and then I may take L theanine an amino acid, from green tea, which helps me a lot too. The following is an old wives tail, but it works like a charm, and that is I take tea that has caffeine at the break at 5am and I fall into a very deep, still, comfortable sleep for another hour or two after that. The body temp is an issue, as I'm in the subtropics, so I often put cool water on my self, back of neck and arms to cool myself off. For many years, I did not know that other people who just lie down and fall asleep without moving... until they wake up in the morning... because I have never done that, even with all the physical exercise which I do regularly during the day.
