Also something to note: If a seller is selling laptops as a bulk lot or has multiple listings of the same laptop type ( as in the listing at 5:05 ), the photos on the listing might not be the exact machine you will receive. This is not necessarily a bad thing (just something to keep in mind) and most sellers state whether or not the machine pictured is what you will receive.

One thing I always do when looking at eBay laptops is to make sure the power adapter is included. This just helps to ensure the computer potentially wasn’t stolen or that the computer actually works once it’s received. Great video!

Good tip! However, when it comes to large auctions, sometimes the chargers are not included with laptop lots and therefore are not sold with the laptop when it is put up on ebay by the middleman.

@@AAComputersandTechnology I work for a large company and whenever someone leaves and we give their laptop back to IT they only ever want the machine itself, even if the user had spare batteries, chargers, peripherals, docking station etc. I have a ton of spare batteries and chargers thanks to this. Usually only the laptop itself is sent off for secure recycling as mostly my employer only cares that the hard drive was securely disposed of. Then the laptop minus charger gets stuck up on ebay by the recycling company. A bit of a waste really as both the X220 and X230 I had before my current laptop would have been fine being upgraded from windows XP/Windows 7 to Windows 10 but they give us a new machine every time.

This is exactly what I do for buying servers off ebay. I setup searches for certain models, priced under a limit. I also browse the entire servers section, filter out all the old crap using the (-) term, set a minimum price(to filter out junk), and a max price, and sort by newest listings. I've gotten some very good deals going that way, because the newer listings usually include good deals
@troy24786 жыл бұрын
That is exactly how I buy off Ebay. The only thing I would add is take your time. I usually scan the computers for a week or two to get a good feel for what is out there and definitely make an offer if you get a chance. I just bought a Dell E7240. The asking price was $300 I offered $236 expecting the seller to counter offer since I went so low. Instead the seller excepted the offer. Also I just noticed the seller was one of the ones you listed, imseonline. I highly recommend this seller. The seller stated he did not warranty batteries. When my laptop arrived the battery would not take a charge. I contacted him. He sent one out a replacement battery immediately and it was actually a higher capacity battery than came originally with the computer.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't expect that type of battery replacement from any seller, nice of them to do that, but most times they don't run the machine on battery long enough if at all to be able to say whether its good or not so you usually figure replacement into the price you are willing to pay. Tons of aftermarket batteries out there, and if you have a Battery's Plus around close by they can most likely rebuild it for you for a pretty decent price, or have a replacement available.
@troy24786 жыл бұрын
The reason I contacted the seller was his ad specifically said "gently used battery" after which it said he didn't warranty it. When I got the laptop. The amber light continually blinked and the battery was completely gone. I figured it would not hurt to contact the seller. I would not have if the battery held any charge at all. Also the laptop sold without a hard drive, so I had to budget extra money for that. This particular model only takes msata drives which run around $70 for a used 256 gb. There was also another $13 for shipping so I was all in at $320. A battery would run another $50. At that point I would be above market value which is around $350. But the seller gladly replaced the battery. That is why I am recommending him and will buy from him again.

Beware of "untested" or "as is, don't know if this works" in a listing description. It only takes a few minutes for a seller to plug in a computer and at least see if the BIOS screen comes up. You can figure that "untested" means DOA at least 50% of the time. On the other hand, I've had pretty good luck with "for parts or repair." Something like half the time the computer has been fully functional after putting in a hard drive and getting the proper power supply. You can get some nice bargains this way if you're willing to take a chance. But make sure you don't pay more than about a third the price of an equivalent guaranteed working one.

It depends on what you are buying. For a T440p or vintage such as a t43, that is alright or even good. For a t400 or t60, that is a bit much. In the end, the starting configuration is important, especially the screens for some models. You don't really want a 1024x768 15"TN panel with a ccfl backlight like I got, as they are a lot more difficult to replace and difficult to adjust to. Ofc, "good condition" put together with "thinkpad" is highly questionable. Most see harsh usage, and aren't in mint condition. I'd just put a coating of plastidip on an old thinkpad to restore it, as it costs less to buy a scuffed one than a pristine one. The price difference is extreme.

My tip would be, check out laptops that have various possible configurations where eBay's auto-populated item details might be wrong. I just got a ThinkPad T540p for $257 and the description was not correct - screen was listed as 1920x1080 but was really 1366x768. I got a partial refund of $60, so I ended up with a quad core i7 ThinkPad for under $200! Bottom line: first of all, make sure the deal you're getting is one you're ok with if everything ends up matching the description. Second, check all the specs on the listing and even take screenshots, then comb through everything once you get the laptop to see if it's all correct. If you can get a partial refund on something that was already a decent deal, it becomes a spectacular deal.

If you want to refurbish laptops for a profit then local auctions are probably your best bet. I used to by lots off govdeals: www.govdeals.com/.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
You need lots of time, lots of money, and a vehicle to drive all over the place to get stuff cheap enough to be able to repair, upgrade, and resell. Ebay isn't the place to go, and auctions aren't necessarily going to net anything good either, especially if you don't live anywhere close enough to where they hold large government auctions. Typically you can get a laptop for example for "parts" for around $30 on ebay...by the time you upgrade it and get it working you've spend several hundred dollars in parts plus the initial $30 on the purchase of the questionable laptop...so now what's it worth? Well to you its worth several hundred dollars plus your time in the labor of the repair work & upgrades, etc....so now you have a laptop that's $400+, but to a consumer its only worth $100...well now you have to find that 1 person who's going to pay you $300 over the market value of the laptop LOL. Watch auction sites, Ebay, local 2nd hand stores and pawn shops for deals that is about all you really can do and don't pay too much up front for the machine because it really cuts into your capacity of being able to upgrade and/or repair it if needed, and many times you'll find if you get it from an auction or ebay that the hard drive is gone, the hard drive caddy is gone and so is the cover in many cases so now you not only need a hard drive, you also have to track down the caddy and the cover. However, its a lot better if you concentrate on one certain machine, or machine type...for example, Lenovo Thinkpad T400-T430 many of those caddy's and covers for example will interchange, so once you get a few machines that don't work keep them for spare parts, another machine you get just may need one of those parts out of your dead machine pile. If you can get a "Lot" of machines at an auction for cheap buy them, go through them 1 by 1 note on each machine with a notecard, or post-it note, what each machine needs, then start pulling parts together to get machines running and go from there. Eventually it may turn profitable, but at the same time if you have to start shipping machines around the country you'll lose a lot of $$$$ in shipping & insurance costs.
@tylerwatt126 жыл бұрын
This is very hard to be profitable in. Broken laptops on ebay are sold for exactly what they're worth, working, minus the time spent to fix them and parts to replace. If you can somehow find laptops for free, or friends who have broken unwanted laptops, it may make you a little money.
@wildbill23c6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, you will definitely go broke before you make any money trying to buy and repair, upgrade computers and resell them. Unless you are using used, no-name parts, and are buying the used computers for pennies. Even at $20 for a used machine, by the time you spend the time to run diagnostics, get replacement parts, upgrade parts, an OS license unless you run Linux, etc. you are not going to profit from doing this at all. I've done a couple of rebuilds on cheaply purchased laptops for friends & family, but its nothing I could do and survive on, I made nothing on those machines by the time I purchased RAM, SSD's, repairs, software, OS, etc. There isn't any money in it at all. That is unless you can buy a pallet full of computers for a few bucks...yes a few bucks, many will be trash, or parts machines, bad batteries, screens, etc. non-repairable type stuff like that will quickly negate any sort of profit you may have had. Most laptops and desktops you find cheap are cheap for a reason, there's something wrong with them, or they are so old they aren't worth anything except scrap because you cannot run a new enough OS on them to be of any use to anybody.

I recommend not buying anything with a first-gen Core i series CPU. they run excessively hot. I replaced a Pentium with an i3 of the same clock speed to get more cache in a cheap Toshiba laptop, and the i3 was just heavy on the heat in comparison. I had to run the CPU at a clock of 1GHz to keep the thing within reasonable temps so it didn't overheat and shut off... something it's been doing for a while now. (a replacement HP Stream 14 laptop is now in the owner's hands and I'm getting this one back soon.) second-gen Sandy Bridge Core i series stuff is where performance to heat ratio shines. a VERY good laptop model aside from this I can recommend is the HP ProBook 6475b. 14" AMD-based laptop, and for 30 bucks more (or sometimes less!), you can get a separate A10-4600M with performance equivalent to a C2Q Q6600 that just drops in. it runs a bit hotter, but it's worth it (and extremely easy to install!) these will take up to 32GB of DDR3 so you can just put whatever amount you want in them and have a very decent laptop that can do some light gaming on the side, since it's an APU. my sister has one of these and although she had someone angrily shove her bag on the floor which did crack one of her hinges the way it fell, replacement parts are stuuuuupid cheap, and again, easy to install. they run Linux VERY well, and even under Windows, 7 is the best for them, and since one-build-older-than-current, Win10 also works without any real issues. if you ever want to do a video on this particular laptop, they are something I heavily recommend. the most expensive part of upgrading any of them is DDR3 because RAM prices, but you can either play it safe and drop in DDR3-1333, or get REALLY GOOD PERFORMANCE out of a pair of 1600 sticks. Linked here is the performance you can expect with 1333 sticks: browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/1303600 (this was done with my sister's laptop.) Overall the cost shouldn't be more than $100 for one and a CPU combined if you find one in good shape-- but do watch out for ones with password-protected BIOSes. Also, older "ultraportable" Core 2 business laptops are still okay too. the Thinkpad X200 is fine, the E4200 is not, however. made cheaply, can attest. the Thinkpad X301 is also a good bet, if you can find one in decent shape. I've been pining for one for a while to add to the collection. perfect-size screen and everything. Some Fujitsus are also a good buy. T2020 Tablet PC can take 8GB unofficially, and most aren't beat to hell.

I don't set a top price, as you can miss some deals that way. I sort lowest to highest, and start slogging through them. While I do have a top price in my mind, I will go a bit past it, as I have sometimes found items just over my "limit" that were well worth spending another $5-10 (double the RAM, an SSD, large HD, etc). I have especially run into that issue when looking for individual components, where just a few dollars over my initial max has gotten me a brand new mSATA instead of used. Making offers - often works well, but I'm trying to get a new battery for my Dell E6520, and everyone at the low end has the 9-cell for $23.95. I hit up FIVE different buyers and offered below $23.95, and every single one denied, most by never answering, one by knocking a whole 50 CENTS off, and another knocking zero, yes ZERO off the price - why even offer Best Offer if you're not going to even discount it a penny? I couldn't even upgrade the BIOS, since the updater won't run without a battery with at least 10% charge, and I didn't have one at all. Every listing I saw for the E6520 battery said it would work in an E6530, but none listed the E6440, which I also have. Looked today for 9-cells for the E6440...and the listings say it works for the E6520. So I pulled my 96% 6-cell from my E6440 a few hours ago, threw it into the E6520, and finally got to update the BIOS.

I spent time waiting for the right cheap laptop to come along and as a rule anything over £10 isn't worth it, unless the seller is including charger, battery, HDD or SSD and memory. Lately four have turned up off eBay. Lenovo Z61M for £2.20p. A Toshiba A200-1V0 for £2.40p. An Acer Aspire 5670 for £8.50p and a HP G56 -106SA for £7.38p. OK they aren't at the bleeding edge of technology but they all just needed a bit of TLC to get back on the road, so to speak. Once you see something that looks cosmetically reasonable do some research. Checkout their specs and how much it will cost you put right. Many dealers have stocks of older parts that just sit there gathering dust, so something like a new keyboard maybe had at very reasonable price. Check out second hand parts too. A working 160GB HDD can be had for as little as £1, as can 2GB of DDR2 memory. The first three are 32 bit machines, but they're still useful. Repaired, cleaned up, maxed out on memory then kitted out with a fresh install of Windows 7 and eager new owners will cross your palm with silver. Why Windows 7? It's what these machine were built for, so all the drivers and updates are available and it cheap. Avoid Windows 10 and definitely Vista. Personally, I run and love Linux, accept for online gaming, but Joe Public has never heard of it so don't be tempted to put on a machine to sell on.

It comes 2nd nature to me now. But I forget how confusing it once was to buy things online. It's so easy to get scammed if you don't know what to look for.

Dude. My local University Surplus store sells ThinkPads for $20-$40. I got an L512 there for $20 last week and my friend got an l420 there for $40.
@talonts96 жыл бұрын
Dude, your university isn't normal. Many universities have local auction houses auction their surplus off, and it goes for a lot more than that (but sometimes I get lucky).
@maxslab87746 жыл бұрын
talonts9 Those prices are all the listed prices. It's not an auction. You can walk in there on any day and have those prices.
@talonts96 жыл бұрын
So? My point stands - YOUR UNIVERSITY ISN'T NORMAL. Most universities either sell to certified scrappers (which SUCKS, because they scrap working systems), to auction houses, or have local auction houses sell for them on campus. Universities selling directly, and that cheap, is definitely not normal. Take advantage of it while you can.

I got a Thinkpad X220 i7 4GB model for 104.5 dollars on eBay :)
@NickShvelidze6 жыл бұрын
I'd rather buy a laptop with a dead hard drive than one without a hard drive, because the stupid people who remove HDDs often don't put the caddy back. Also ThinkPad batteries are expensive and it's better to get an almost dead battery with your laptop and rebuild it.

Where do you see the seller's ratings? I'm looking to buy a gaming desktop...and I'm a little bit cautious. Anyone know a good, legit seller?

When you say do not let the seller screw you over… Some people Are idiots and end up screwing over the seller because they don’t know their stuff.

Do you know witch cheap laptop like that comes whit 1080p panel
@talonts96 жыл бұрын
Lots of them do. You have to look at the specs and watch for an FHD panel. To be sure, you need to get the serial number of the laptop and look up what res panel it came with. That USED to be easy with Lenovos, but they made it a LOT harder to track that info down a few years back. Dells are easy, plug the serial in at support.dell.com, and you can look up all the components it came with, and what its' last upgrades were, if any, since it was last scanned.
