She's not telling you the synonyms. She's just pointing out alternatives. These are sentence connectors and even if some are synonymous and some are not, you can still use them interchangeably. That's the purpose of teaching sentence connectors. It helps you upgrade your ordinary vocabulary for sentence connectors and replace them with better ones.

I don’t think on top of that is a very good switch. It works, but it loses the affect as it switches to colloquialism. Henceforth is also a bit here and there, not really a synonym, similar enough to make sense, but not similar enough to be considered a synonym from my point of view.

I’ve been taught to try not to say “I think” or “in my opinion” writing an essay. If the point of an essay is to convince something, it’s a term that tends to take away from how confident you sound, and weakens the overall claim. Usually you can just state something like a fact, even if it is an opinion. Give it some explanation and your good, improves the overall tone. Yes, “In my opinion” can be a good alternative to “I think,” but just keep in mind that a third, and often clearer alternative is just removing it entirely ;)
