Agreed. I once watched an interview with Les Stroud (Survivorman) and the interviewer asked Les what's his favorite method of starting a fire, and Les said with a Bic lighter. When a situation goes sideways you should make things go as easy for yourself as possible and conserve your strength.

Super smart approach to this. Always think about energy as a finite resource. Yes you can start a fire in hundreds of ways. But whatever way is the fastest, that should be your first. Then work your way with two different ways beyond that.

I leave the child gard on for the times when my hands get wet( rain storms were frequent when I lived in the PNW and rain dont stop me from smoking) . Every car/ backpack in the fleet has a gas station mini torch / crack lighter, for when your fingers quit working from cold. A) they hold more gas B) with proper propping it can be used by foot or forearms only hands fingers are not as necessaryas with a bic. C) the electronic ignitor works under water so a little rain doesn't prevent fire. D ) I'm a smoker so the torch is a backup ( and has been a welcome sight when the finger had already quit, or Bic was at/ near end of gas.

@codywyattbeasley520
@codywyattbeasley520 Жыл бұрын
For child safety purposes, in case a toddler or a small child were to get ahold of the lighter, it's provides an extra step to making it ignite because you have to apply pressure to the metal strip as you strike the flint wheel with your thumb, which probably is an efficient enough safety for Bic to avoid lawsuits from parents who's kid found a lighter & accidentally burned down their house. Kinda like pill bottles, I suppose. You know how pill bottles have that plastic ring safety mechanism where you have to press down on the lid as you turn it in order to get the lid off? It's really nothing to us as adults, but I guess it has the potential to prevent freak accidents.

Duct tape wrap as shown or para cord strips wrapped also are great fire starters as are the Fritos you take to snack on. I always keep mine in a baggie so it stays dry. I also prefer a torch type lighter I can recharge and super easy to light a fire. In wet areas like we had often in Alaska, we would just use a road flare to start fires. However, most of my packs also have matches in match-safes, Ronson lighters, Firebird lighters ( available at many cigar shops) and ferro rods. To quote Les Stroud: " Hey, I like fires". Tne new electronic lighters seem to be suitable for lighting cigarettes, but not much else.

@clockworkvanhellsing372
@clockworkvanhellsing372 Жыл бұрын
Don't pack an empty lighter. All Bic lighters (except the black ones) can be easily checked by shining a light from below. You'll see a clear line of brightness change where the fill level is. Keep in mind a full one is enough for ~ 2000 flames. The not working in cold conditions can be solved by carriing it inside the cloths instead of outside in the cold and keeping it in a waterproof bag (with i.e. a ziplock) keeps it dry. Although it can be fixxed in a few minutes if it got wet by removing the safetyspring, running the weel on some dry cloth and blowing the flint dry. Amd get some stormproof matches with the striker inside a waterproof container. If you're really wet fiddeling with a ferrorod is not what you want to do.

taking that metal part off does make lighting it way easier, but it also makes the lighter way more inefficient. once it’s off the lighter makes a significantly bigger flame, and wastes tons of gas. so it’s best to leave that piece on & just deal with lighting it in the cold even though it sucks, if you want it to last😭😭

I imagine that the guard over the sparkwheel meant for childproofing also adds a layer of security so that the flint spring doesn't push the wheel out. I've had a number of lighters that fell apart in that way, and that tiny bit of flint going missing would be a tragedy in an emergency situation. Not only that, but making it a bit harder to strike isn't a bad idea if you're carrying it in your pocket. Someone down below also suggested placing an o-ring under the button, to prevent accidentally depressing it and causing gas to leak out. Seems like a good idea to me.
@OmegaWalnutChug
@OmegaWalnutChug Жыл бұрын
I've never had a lighter fall apart on me before. The spring is nowhere near strong enough to push the wheel out. And it's not going to spark in your pocket. If the lighters your buying fall apart when you take the childproofing you need to buy a bic because a bic won't do that. A dollar store lighter will.

What you can also do is carry a spare lighter and a spare for the spare lighter so you will always have the ability to start a fire at your fingertips.

I always take the metal thing out regardless because it makes it hard to light.

Also, once it dies, you can carefully pry off the rest of the metal casing, then hold down the gas while simultaneously striking the flint (keeping continuous pressure on the gas) and although the flame is small, it will light a few more times. Only works on Bic but hey ...bonus fire is still fire right? 😅

Even if it's out of gas you can shave the plastic off like it's magnesium then bankroll som flint on the plastic slowly, then spark the flint and it will light the plastic
