Needed this. Was let go from a massive chain salon about a month ago. Due to me not being fast enough for them. I prefer quality over quantity and they didn’t like that.

I think assisting is 100% something that someone should do. There’s so much you don’t know how to do out of beauty school. But yeah it’s so important to find a salon that has a good reputation & renowned advanced education program. I thought my first salon was my dream salon, and that changed real quick. So much abuse of power & they didn’t know wtf they were doing when it came to providing education or a timeline. But in a way I’m glad that happened, that I quit on the spot bc now I found my salon with an amazing program, educators & reputation.

Thanks for this Sam! I’ve been watching since your cosmo school days - before I ever even really took the thought of becoming a hairstylist seriously. I’m almost 2 years post grad now! Things are still tough but it will get better and it’s continuously getting better. That’s one thing I really wish was pushed more in school - how long it’s going to be before you actually start making enough money to survive 😅. Obviously it’s different for everyone, but I work at a nice salon - I get enough clients that I can handle and I’m still so much more broke than when I was bartending.

Special prices attract “special clients”….. the first ones to complain and be difficult. In the end they are loyal to the price or salon ….. not to you🤷🏽‍♀️
