I'd like to refin the top of the body of a guitar that has a polyurethane clear coat. It's also a set neck; and has a 7-ply binding around the top I want to keep/save. thoughts and tips on removing the poly from the top with the least risk of damaging the binding? I plan to tape over the binding and the neck; then use a heat gun, working from the outside edges inward, from the edge of the binding, using the scraper attachment on the heat gun. there are a couple of tight areas where I'll need to use the small nozzle on the heat gun and a flat head screw driver.
@BradAngove2 ай бұрын
The heat could melt your binding. I would probably just scrape/sand in those circumstances.

Hi Brad, as a guitar player for 40 years I am on my vert first guitar restoration project from here in glorious Scotland, 👍😁just a wee question for you mate, I have sanded the guitar body, added a coat of primer, sanded and then painted, it seems smooth but do I have to fine sand again for the clear coat to adhere to the paint??? Cheers...Stephen.

I’m about to do my fourth custom guitar and I want to paint the top one color, and the back and sides another. Do you have any tips as to how I should mask it off, or whether I should spray the top first, or the sides/back first? It’s an Ibanez RG120 so it has a pretty tight radius on the edges and relatively flat top
@BradAngove10 ай бұрын
Spray the whole thing one color, let it dry, sand smooth, and then tape and spray your top color.

Thanks Brad! Can you make a similar video on spraying metallics step by step? Would you increase the distance from the body when spraying metallics as apposed to spraying Primer(as you spray in this Video)? And spray all the coats light?

I’ve never tried that combo; I hope it goes well. I’d give the Oxford a least a week, but it depends a bit on the temperature and humidity where you are.

@brandonmcvey9511 Жыл бұрын
Brad, when repainting a body should it be sanded down to the wood or just to the protective poly? Then whats the timeline with primer, my color and 2k clear? I was thinking applying primer 2-3 coats, let dry 24 hrs, apply color 3 coats, 10 min apart, let dry a week, then 3 coats 2k clear and let dry for a few weeks before sand/buff/polish.
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
No need to sand to the wood usually. You can use the existing paint as your primer. Then the timing depends on what paint you’re using.
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
If you’re using actual 2K clear you won’t want to leave it more than a day or two before sanding and buffing.
@brandonmcvey9511 Жыл бұрын
@@BradAngove how long should I wait from my paint to the 2k clear? Is a week dry time good? I just need to make sure it dries all the way before the 2k clear right?
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but some paints dry fast and some take longer. For most paints in dry warm conditions I would say a week is plenty.
@jantzencase75246 ай бұрын
Do you need to get the paint rig or could you just hang it to paint it
@BradAngove6 ай бұрын
You can hang it, it’s just slower and more difficult. If you’re only doing one or two guitars it doesn’t really make sense to buy a rig. They’re just nice to have.

@davidgrason161 Жыл бұрын
because it's lacquer, can I wet sand it with like 1000 grit and then buff it like I would an automotive paint job?
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
Yes. My only comment on that is be careful wet sanding it if it’s on wood. Moisture can get in and swell the wood a bit, which will likely cause the lacquer to crack.

Same as most if not all Nuno Bettencourt guitars. Do You recommend this and can I paint over the Black? If Not I’m Just gonna do pin strips on the upper
@BradAngove7 ай бұрын
What are you asking if I recommend? You can paint over the black, but you would need to sand the gloss first to allow the new paint to stick. 400 or 600 grit should be fine.

@bradangrove Hi Brad, I would like to pimp a guitar as a project for a KZbin video on my channel. I actually want to decorate it with blue rhinestones, but I saw a video of someone who did that recommending to spray paint it in the colour of the rhinestones first. Seems sensible. I will be buying the guitar especially for the project, just in case it goes wrong 😅. Thought a blue one might save me the spray painting, but I can’t get the type of guitar I want in blue, so I will buy a second hand one (most likely brown) and then spray paint it blue. I would love some advice on this (and when I do it, I would be more than happy to link your account👍🏻😁). - as I have to go from brown to blue, would you recommend spray painting it white first or isn’t that necessary as I will be covering it all in Rhinestones anyway 😅? - I saw someone mention in the comments that it requires warm weather for spray painting, but I would love to do it in January. Unfortunately, it’s winter here (Europe). Would it work in the cold? Our flat isn’t that big and as I don’t want to poison anyone, I want to do it outside…. Sorry for the long comment, I didn’t know how to describe it shorter 😅. Best wishes, Carolyn
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what kind of temperatures you’re dealing with right now, but painting in the cold is a bad idea. It won’t dry properly. Even painting outside in the summer can bit a touch risky. I would do a couple coats of white to start before applying your blue unless it’s a dark blue, in which case it will be easier if you do a black base coat.

Brad, have a question for you I am painting a body a pearl white tri coat system with 2k clear. The body is basswood so I didn't grain fill so much, i did a little in bad spots that had tool marks or a lot of pores with drywall mud. I sealed and primed it with 2k epoxy primer. I have all the base and pearl on several coats each. Sanded it a bunch of times after priming sessions and the 1st base session. Im still seeing some small pores / divots in spots do you think the 2k clear would be enough to fill them in or should I sand it back some and redo the pearl first?
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
2K can deal with very minor divots, but it’s definitely better to get them out before you clear coat.
