Thank you so much for these amazing tips! When I first started teaching, it was so surprising how hard it is to teach beginners! But these tips are so valuable and really break it down in a clear and digestible way. As always, thanks for your incredibly wonderful wisdom!

Rachel, as always, thank you for your helpful tips! I find that being a welcoming and easy-going instructor does wonder for beginners! If you don't take yourself too seriously, your class participants tend to adopt that same relaxed energy and the whole experience becomes more positive. Also, I liked your Bali story. I've been in yoga classes where instructors made it all about themselves: effortlessly gliding through postures while the rest of us struggled and needed serious assistance but received none. In relation to that, what would your advice be to a teacher who has more of a mixed-level class? How do you divide your attention more fairly among students that need a lot of guidance and support and those that maybe need some minor adjustments so that no one feels left out or picked on? Thank you! ❤

AWESOME question - I think that deserves a good deep dive so I will put it on the list for the next upcoming video!! ~ Great advice about the role of the teachers attitude ~ so important to recognize the role we can play in setting the right kinda tone! 🙏🏻🤗

Hi Claire-Louise! I know!! Isn’t it so much fun? I was actually given it my my friend Ava Taylor from YAMA talent. I am not sure if she is selling them, but I also have a fun jumper that says kindness that I got from dharmabums.

Thank you so much for this! I love teaching beginners so the info you provide is super helpful 😊 I have noticed that down dog to forward fold is a difficult transition for some. You mentioned this briefly in the vid, but do you have any suggestions for alternate, more accessible transitions for this?

Yes! I think it's easier to just step back into a pose (like high lunge or t set up for warrior 2) from uttanasana - and then step forward and back with the other foot again for the second side. Also, I like this more than stepping back from tadasana as you have your hands on the floor (or on blocks) in uttanasana and it's less wobbly. Also, people can generally step back further from uttanasana than from tadasana so you get a better length from the stance. This is a really easy switch that still lets you keep a little bit of a flow in there :) If you want to avoid the first part of the sun salutation, you can also have people turn sideways on their mats and take their feet wide (like about to do a wide legged forward fold) then set the foundation for warrior 2 from there; this is also a nice accessible way to get into those standing poses. I like this more for vira 2 than for crescent though, as it's more stable.
